Audi Crowned Car Company of the Year in 2006 Autocar Awards

Audi Crowned Car Company of the Year in 2006 Autocar Awards
The seemingly inexorable rise of Audi in the UK and the pioneering design and engineering that spearheaded it have been recognised this week by Autocar Magazine, which presented the brand with its coveted Car Company of the Year Award. Professor Dr Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management Audi AG, collected the award from Autocar editor Chas Hallett at a high profile event held on November 15th at the new Mercedes World facility in Brooklands. According to the editorial in the latest awards issue of the magazine (15th November), Audi has been honoured because “quite a few pretenders over the years have set out to best BMW and Mercedes-Benz…one bid - Audi’s - has succeeded.” It also backs up the decision by adding that ‘exhaustive’ testing of the Audi range by the Autocar team has proved that “its models now stand with the best.”

It's people like you that make people hate Lexus. Do us all a favor and leave, moron.

Audi deserves this award hands down. Look at all their achievements (Le Mans diesel victory etc.).

Dude, did you watch the Country Music Awards the other day when they were giving the award for best female artist and when newcomer Carrie Underwood got the award Faith Hill yelled into the camera the word "what???" and she walked off because she didn't win.

Youre acting like Faith Hill, so grow up and clean up the profanity.

Actualy the ES350 is larger than a Camry and resembles more of an Avalon than a Camry. The GS,IS,SC and LS do not share platforms with Toyota!!You guys point the finger at Toyota about rebadging some vehicle but almost every company does it,Chrysler and Mercedes share underbody components,VW,Audi,Seat,Skoda and Lambo share platforms and the list goes on!!!

In my mind, and in the mind of many, Audi doesnt exist as a luxury brand (people jump first to Mercedes, then BMW, then Lexus)..If it wasnt for the R8 being such an incredible car(probably my next car), I would not even be bothered to look at Audi news..Come on people its an Audi..That is why I am very hesitant to buy the R8, when I tell people Audi, they give me wierd looks..You have a CLS500 and your gonna jump to an Audi??, then I have to explain to everyone what makes the R8 special..I usually make reference to the movie IRobot..

Well, Maybe in the Mind of many AMERICANS.

The fact that you even care ONE BIT that Morons who do not know about AUDI will wonder why you switched from a CLS to an R8 show that you are not the Typical AUDI Owner/Driver

AUDI Owners/Drivers Know what they Have, Know how good it is and Know that those who Know anything about Automobiles Know about AUDI Products and how Good they Are. So they do not need the Poseur, Badge Shopping That Is Rife amongst the Status Begging Crowd.

Real Confident People Would Buy & Drive anything that is Extremly well Made and UNDERSTATED simply because it makes sense and not Attention Seeking.

People buy Audi because they're cheaper than BMW and Merc, especially used. It's a B-choice. Apparently, a lot of people convince themselves they're buying the best, but no credible enthusiast source agrees.

Bring on the RS4 and V10 fantasies now. I guess if VAG puts its mind to it, it can come up with a $75k car that rivals BMW.

Umm, no.

I drove the M3, CLK500 and S4 Cabriolet before making my decision.

Price isn't really an issue. None of Audi's models are more than $4-$5K cheaper than their BMW equivalents.

I bought it because it was a very nice car. I didn't buy it because I couldn't afford the M3, and I definitely didn't buy it because the CLK was too image-centric (it's too girly). I bought it because it's fast, luxurious, stylish and functional, and I'm starting to really dislike your views. Keep an open mind.

Audiot are you forgetting the R8. There is no competition for it, in its class and therefore it is the best in class.

audiotaudiot - 11/16/2006 2:53:51 PM

I agree the R8 is cool-looking. But there is competition, and it's called the 911. Until enough people have driven the R8, it's hard to call it the winner in that category.

If Audi takes the A4 & A6 the route of the R8 and RS4, which I fully believe will happen, then I would be very excited about Audi. I love the brand now, but wish it didn't need to be "understood" to be loved.

In the end you don't drive the brochure. You do drive the car. So the sales & marketing is a lesser issue in my mind from the fact that Audis are 2nd-4th best in their categories. Doesn't mean they don't deserve to win, but it's like the golfer who never wins a hole and wins the tournament. Less satisfying for the spectator.

Ironic, really.

You Americans think you know so much about cars, and some 'British magazine' is way off the mark because obviously Britain is not America, therefore they must be stupid.

Oh really? Should we be trusting a nation of SUV-lovers and pick-up enthusiasts to tell us what makes a good luxury car?

Oh! Oh! I know! A good luxury car is one that has good advertising! That makes sense!

Now I know why Lexus is so popular in America. They spend billions and trillions of dollars into advertising which gives their brand a 'perceived' image based on what some marketing chums brainstormed in a board meeting. Hello! If you need advertising to justify your opinion of a car, then what hope is there for you?

Personally, (and I am from neither Europe or America) I think when it comes to cars, the British have their head screwed on right. Their opinions cannot be brought, their knowledge is invaluable, and they actually TEST the cars in real world driving conditions and base their opinions on handling/quality/styling/functionality/pride of ownership.

They don't need a meaningless page in the back of a magazine to tell them its a decent car or not.

You strip away all of Lexus's Bulls**t marketing, and you will discover a car no better or worse than the competition, just a well-appointed car with decent reliability. It may be an opinion, but I feel it is accurate.

Now there is nothing wrong, AT ALL with Audi. Audi is not a Volkswagen. See? Americans thinking they are so smart by coming out with comments like that. Well it isn't true.

The British know their cars. They aren't fooled by marketing.

They aren't that ignorant.

Gentlemen,

I'm not the enemy here. This has nothing to do with being an American, or advertising, or being an idiot.

Instead of piling on the insults, you could simply admit that Audi does not have the class-leading cars of BMW, Lexus or even Infiniti.

As has already been stated by others in previous Audi posts, the 3-series and IS admittedly beat the A4 in power and refinement. The Cayman and Z4 beats the TT in driving dynamics. The 5-series beats the A6 in every performance test ever done.

You have a legitimate claim to the A8 being a class-leader. And the RS4. (There. Answered my own question.)

Audi wins this award on being a solid car. That's not opinion. That's the way it is, if you look down their product line.

Why don't you lobby Audi to hurry up the process of strengthening its product line, instead of going apeshit on people like me, who are simply looking at Audi's strengths and weaknssess for what they are?

MarkMark - 11/17/2006 3:13:43 PM

Agree audiot, but I have to disagree with you on the TT. I just like the TT better, but then again we are talking about a TT Quattro and a Z4 RWD, so a little different dynamics are to be expected.

Then I am a AWD guy anyways.

Audi R8 rocks!

Audi A3, A8 and new TT are very good also.

I think the A6 is the only weak link right now. I have never been fond of its styling, although I am glad they no longer have that large, grey-plastic rear bumper piece.

Also, with respect to the R8, can an owner have mulitple side blades and interchange them on their own, or is it a trip to the dealer type of thing.

I'd like to get a black R8 with the both the black and silver blades and be able to quickly change them out.

It was cloudy and you could see the S6 from FAR away, much better visibility than normal headlight Daytime Running Lights. Actually you could see the S6's LED Daytime Running Ligths better than some headlights on full power of some older cars. The S6 is very noticable from the LEDS on the front. Great safety feature and doesn't use any power.
