Audi V12 TDI Is “Race Engine Of The Year”
udi yet again proved "Vorsprung durch Technik” on the race track by taking the first victory for a diesel powered sportscar at the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours. The revolutionary diesel technology has now also triumphed in competition with Formula 1 and other motorsport categories: A panel of experts from the British specialist magazine "Race Engine Technology” voted the 650 hp V12 TDI engine from the Audi R10 TDI as "Race Engine of the Year 2006” and "Alternative Race Engine of the Year”.

On behalf of AUDI AG, Ulrich Baretzky accepted the "Race Engine of the Year” trophy at the Professional MotorSport World Expo in Cologne. The Head of Engine Technology at Audi Sport was also awarded the title "Design Engineer of the Year 2006” at the international motorsport exhibition.

The Audi R10 TDI is unbeaten since making its debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring last March. The revolutionary diesel sportscar started eight races and took the checkered flag as winner on each occasion - impressive proof of the efficiency of Audi TDI Power.

No other race engine more deserving. Amazing performance and awesome fuel econony for racing. It did 15 (8.5 mile) laps per a fuel tank while the competition did 13 or 12.

Idiot. These are RACE CARS. They blast down @ 200 mph for several miles, accelerate. They are FLOORED. As you know diesels achieve their BEST fuel economy at low load, not happening much in a race. In a race a hybrid would have almost no milage gains over a normal gasoline engine. Did you read the part that the laps are 8.5 miles long??? The R10 completed 380 8.5 mile laps in 24 hours. It won by 4 laps, or 34 miles. That is domination. The great fuel economy of the R10 really helped in that, plus it was the fastest/most efficient/cleanest vehicle in the race. Pretty darn well.

What bigger gas tank, this year they all had 90 liter tanks. For next year the R10 gets a fuel tank reductin to only 81 liters.

No, the same thing happened to the R8. Audi apparently has an "unfair advantage" because their engineers are geniuses. The R10 will still blow the competition away. Its advantage was never a larger gas tank.

huu, i think i should explain that mdalle works for a company that deals very specifically with big boats ergo big marine diesels.

The injection pressures and just about everthing on the Audi R10 TDI are above of a normal diesel. Some of the R10 TDI tech will go down to normal TDIs, for example the V12 6 liter TDI with 500 hp and 738 lb-ft torque.

Lexus does make great race engines,just look at the Rolex Series,the Lexus uses a 4.3 liter engine and has won the championship over BMW,porsche,Pontiac and Ford which use much larger engines!!

What, no street engine is like a race engine. The article you mentioned has nothing to do with diesels for road cars. The next generation TDIs will be very much amazing. High power, low consumption.
