Is Porsche Making The Power Play to Take Over VW?
German Magazine Auto Sport reports today that Porsche is prepared to obtain controlling interest of VW.

With last weeks ouster of VW CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder, followed the resignation of Wolfgang Bernhard VW Brand manager. The time appears to be ripe for Porsche to make its move.

According to Auto Sport Porsche it is prepared to purchase up to 29.9% of VW shares to gain control of the automotive giant Porsche will be careful not to exceed the 30% mark, for if it does it will have to pay an additional compensatory sum to all remaining share holders. The 29.9% goal will make Porsche the card holder for influence of future products and development.

VW and Porsche have a long history of sharing technology and production facilities for several past and present models. VW remains an extremely import supplier of content and technology for Porsche products to this date and these moves will secure industrial and development assets for Porsche long term.

controlling VW passively is one thing, but do NOT distract management from the true nature and purpose of Porsche, or bad things will happen.

I certainly hope so. VW has such potential, but they don't know what they're doing right now. Porsche has a single-mindedness that VW could really benefit from.

Porsche already use VW as a technology and assembly partner. This secures this aspect long term. This may also limit brands such as Audi from targeting the 911 and other models directly.

Yes, the new Porsches will use VW/Audi developed technology such as DSG and FSI direct injection. The Panamera IIRC will have its body built at a VW facility. Helps out both sides.

I think you're missing the point, Jugnu. This isn't a merger of the two entities but taking a controlling interest, i.e. board seats.

It would allow a few key people at Porsche to steer the long-term direction of the organization.

If you think about it, VW has been good about leaving its brands alone. Has VW 'ownership' help or hurt Audi? Lambo? Bentley? The only troubled badge here is VW, which lacks focus, not the entire group.

This merger/acquisition, "merger of equals", whatever it would be, should or could help Porshe if done right...this way the Porsche brand can stick to what it knows best, sportscars, and not have to put out SUV's, Sedans, Station Wagons, etc or fill sements that it has no business being in...and they can rely on VW/Audi for that.

How can Porsche not be happy about it? They are the ones who parted with billions of Euros to snap up this stake in VW

Besides, apart from the 914, some of Porsche's best sellers have had VW input. The 356 used many parts sourced from Wolfsburg, the Porsche 924, although famed for it's "VW Truck Engine" and built by Audi at the old NSU factory was (and still is) one of Porsche's best sellers and it helped Porsche survive the 70s oil crisis i believe, and currently there is the Cayenne, which was a big breadwinner for porsche for a while in the US (although sales are slowing now) and it is partially built by VW in it's Slovakian factory and shares bits with the Touareg and Q7. Porsche has given VW the contract to build the bodies for the Panamera, so they must be happy with past VW-based Porsches. And now, Porsche will get more money through the dividends and shareprice of the stake of VW they now own. Win win i think!

People don't realize one thing on this site.

Ferdinand Porsche started Volkswagen BEFORE he started Porsche, and the companies have been close ever since.

This isn't going to affect Porsche. Their cars have always been related to VW.

The should start the 'merger' with a simple marketing experiment...slap the Porsche badge on the VW Phaeton, to make it a Porsche Phaeton, raise the base price to a bit more than an S-class, make everything optional, and then watch them fly off the shelves.

Its a shame that such as good car as the Phaeton had to start life as a VW.

The Phaeton is quite nice, inside and out.

However, its arch nemesis, the A8L, was 600lbs lighter, had an even more elegant interior, was slightly less anonymous on the outside, and, throughout the few years they were sold alongside each other, was only $1-4K more.

If the Phaeton was badged as an Audi and tweaked slightly, it would've sold.

VW and Porsche were started by the same damn person, Ferry Porsche himself! You are an idiot to look past that!

They're like two peas in a pod- they've always been related. In fact, the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, Ferdinand Pïech, is on the supervisory board of VW!

Live with it! VW and Porsche support each other! And Porsche is by all means better than BMW!

i understand the legacy.. just dont understand why they would want to own this Piece of Shit right now. its a earnings dog with a product pipeline as dry as the shara desert and with very high labour costs and poor quality.
