Toyota Recalls 54,000 Japanese Vehicles For Spontaneous Combustion
Toyota Motor Corp. has recalled about 54,000 passenger cars because of engine problems that led to at least two fires in cars left parked with their engines running, Japan's Transport Ministry said Thursday.

Subject to recall are 54,217 vehicles in two models, including the Harrier sport utility vehicle and Windom sedan. The vehicles have a defect that can cause the engine's computer control system to malfunction and possibly catch fire, Transport Ministry official Yasuyoshi Nakamura said.

There were two cases of fires in Japan, both in cars that had been left parked with their engines running. No injuries were reported, Nakamura said. A total of 26 complaints have been filed about the vehicles in Japan between 2003 and September 2006.

Well, this is better than doing a cost analysis on how much they would save if they did nothing and settled with victims. I have never heard of the 'Windom' or 'Harrier'

Atleast Toyota is doing a recall.. I remember reading a story about a family that had finally bought their first new car (Ford Excursion I think), it was in the garage and the thin peice of plastic that seperates the brake fluid from the 12v live connection was worn out or broke and it caused a fire, burned their house down and killed their dog, Ford didn't do anything about it. Also other Ford things -- like some issues w/ the Crown Victoria, Ford offers a reinforced fuel tank for police interceptor versions, a ladys husband got rear ended, one of the bolts hit the tank and it exploded - killed her husband - Ford didn't do anything about it because the stronger tank is optional equipment..

And to aggrivate the BMW owners, let us not forget the X5s that enjoyed catching on fire! :)

In the end.. stuff happens.. that's why we have insurance -- unless it's the manuf. making cheap components or cutting costs that in the end kills people.

It may not be all Sonys fault.. a lot of people do stupid stuff.. A laptop is a portable computer, computers get hot, I don't understand why people think laptops don't need venitlation as they put them on their fluffy comforter that kills any chance of airflow the thing might have.. Those people need to be hit with the stupid stick.

most german cars that age were either 1) long traded off/DUMPED by the original owner, 2) have had so many NORMAL repairs, the would be "recalls" are just lost in the stack of repair orders.

many of the fires occured while the car was being OPERATED. drivers noted peculiar smells, then smoke filling up the cabin.

they were forced to panic stops and abandonment. since fieros were fiberglass, many cars BURNED TO THE GROUND.

it just possibly MIGHT be a big deal if you were cruising along at 75 mph in your fancy fiero and all of the sudden the engine tossed a cylinder out of the crankcase.

spewing HOT OIL all over the place, and having a fire start inches away from your ass. (actual cause of most fiero fires. the gm QC was such that hairline cracks on THOUSANDS of fiero motors were unleashed on an unsuspecting public.)

yeah, it's no big deal. MUCH more exciting than having a boring toyota burn after you've left it PARKED and idling. and the fire department, taking all the paranoid caution EL34 suggested, was just sitting there, waiting for it to happen. BOOOORING...

much funner to picture a helicoptor shot of a fiero in flames every 1/4 on the turnpike!
