Remind me because I cannot remember...which auto company is it that is ONLY worried about saving the planet at the expense of profits? Let me guess...selfless Toyota?

Don't be so harsh on Huu, he doesn't realize that Toyota / Lexus sell V8-powered gas-guzzling SUV's in the US. Saving the planet my ass.

No car company can really claim that they're saving the planet since they're reacting to market demand. When people want a V8 in their SUV, it's offered etc.

The Jetta TDI has already been shown, it passes all emmisions without the Bluetec stuff. So, no you will be able to get it for 20,000.

Can't the german come up with better technology than diesel?I mean the diesel engine has been out for 100 years,I know that the new diesels are cleaner days days but it's pretty much the same technology!!

There are more than 1.2 million diesel engines in operation in California powering cars, trucks, buses, off-road construction and agriculture equipment, trains, and ships. Each of these engines is responsible for producing tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxides (NOx) and toxic soot (particulate matter or PM) over their lifetime. In fact, while heavy-duty engines account for only 5% of California’s vehicles, they produce approximately 40% of the state’s NOx emissions.1 The health risks from diesel exhaust are severe. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) estimates that 70% of the airborne cancer risk in the state is attributable to diesel PM, prompting CARB to identify diesel exhaust as a toxic air contaminant. CARB also determined that the year 2000 statewide concentration of diesel PM and NOx is responsible for an average of 2,880 premature deaths per year in CA, more than seven premature deaths per day.2 Diesel PM and NOx are also linked to increased asthma hospitalizations, pneumonia, heart disease, and chronic bronchitis.


The growing use of diesel fuel in cars around the world makes these developments especially critical and timely. Global sales of diesel cars are expected to double by 2020, as truck operators and car owners increasingly take advantage of diesel's better fuel efficiency. 10 As the chart below indicates, diesel cars now comprise roughly one-third of all new car sales in the European Union (EU) -- and more than half of new car sales in Spain, Belgium and Austria. 11 Unfortunately, diesel cars are allowed to emit three times as much NOx as gasoline cars in Europe, due to weaker emission standards for diesel cars there. 12 While diesel cars are a tiny portion of the American car market, several car makers are aggressively seeking to sell diesel cars here, including Ford, General Motors and Volkswagen. Given increasing health concerns about diesel emissions around the world, it will be imperative for these vehicles to meet the most stringent emission standards wherever they are driven -- with no special treatment for diesels.

What the hack do you think that Toyota is doing,they are working on lowering the price on Fuel Cell for mass production,but here is the truth about hydrogen:

Electricity generated by solar panels and wind turbines is used to split the water's hydrogen atoms from its oxygen atoms. The hydrogen is then recombined with oxygen in fuel cells, where it releases electrons that drive an electric motor in a car. What Bush didn't reveal in his nationwide address, however, is that his administration has been working quietly to ensure that the system used to produce hydrogen will be as fossil fuel-dependent -- and potentially as dirty -- as the one that fuels today's SUVs. According to the administration's National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap, drafted last year in concert with the energy industry, up to 90 percent of all hydrogen will be refined from oil, natural gas, and other fossil fuels -- in a process using energy generated by burning oil, coal, and natural gas. The remaining 10 percent will be cracked from water using nuclear energy.

Such a system, experts say, would effectively eliminate most of the benefits offered by hydrogen. Although the fuel-cell cars themselves may emit nothing but water vapor, the process of producing the fuel cells from hydrocarbons will continue America's dependence on fossil fuels and leave behind carbon dioxide, the primary cause of global warming.

Still the most efficient engine available.

Chewy, please dont mention these brands in the same breath. they have nothgin to do with each other.. MB is the high priest of german engineering and luxury. The VW is a mass produced compromise. Please make sure you dont make that mistake again. thanks
