GM Goal: 10% of Asian Market by 2010, Is That Possible?
General Motors Corp., its market share shrinking at home, is turning to Asia to boost its profits, and aims to capture 10% of the region's market by 2010, the U.S. automaker's regional chief said 10%.

Top target markets are China and India, where rapid economic growth is fueling demand for cars, said Nick Reilly, president of GM Asia Pacific.

GM aims to sell 1.3 million vehicles in Asia this year to grab a 6.5% market share, two-thirds of which is expected to come from China, he said. Last year, GM's sales hit just over 1 million units in Asia for the first time, giving it a market share of 5.7%.

The company also plans to strengthen its presence in South Korea and Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia and Indonesia, Reilly told the Associated Press in an interview on the sidelines of a regional business forum here.

Believe it or not, GM has adapted to the new world and has truly become a global company. This is with respect to engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, etc. I think that this goal is attainable but cracking the Japanese market will be extremely hard because:

A) Financial barriers
B) Japanese cars are very high-quality / high-tech (not to say GM isnt) but the level of perfection needed to get into Japan is much more than in, for instance, China.

This is a joke, right?

GM should focus on their problems at home first before thinking of expanding in Asia, despite their potential strength in that region.

A shaky company at home is no good in a foreign land...

As a person who travels regularly to China, I would have to say it is definitely possible. BUICK is everywhere in China and I believe (but could be wrong) that BUICK is the #1 selling brand. GM rebadges many of their models from other brands as BUICK in China.

JCF110 is right. Wait till the Chinese know more about cars. They will be just like those Chinese in the US who buy only Japanese or German cars. GM's party won't last long in China.

You could be right, but I think it will take some time. Right now the two brands I see most are Buick and VW, so the Chinese already have some German cars to compare. GM has done a good job marketing Buick and believe it or not, the company has a good reputation for quality. At least that is what I am told by the people I work with.

Don't forget the Italians. Ferraris are Chinese favorites. If you travel to HK..it's usually always a red colored Porsches. Most Asians are has peeled away from German cars in favor of Lexus, Acuras or Infiniti's for sure. Go back 5 years, I could remember almost all wealthy Asians driving mostly MB, Lexus or a BMW. Only my humble observation.

That is very true, the majority of asian usually drive Japanese or German car. I know alot of asian people and everyone in their house drive Japanese car or German. We talking Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and in the Lexury side Lexus, BMW, Infiniti, MB or Audi. Reason why? because Japanese car and German car has much better design and reability.

And no, I do not think 10% of the Asian market will be by GM. Chrysler, maybe. But GM no.

10%.HAHAHAHA
What they will sell Subarbans, escaldes, caprice and luminas to the asian people.
or their neon,optra and Epica
or mustang,corvette,solstice

What, they have nothing to offer Asian people,as they never considered them before.

I will say not even 1%.

Asian people's main priority is RELIABILITY and Fuel efficientand vehicles.Which only Japaneese can provide them.

Don't forget that GM has massive holdings in Suzuki and Daewoo. I'm not sure about their current stake in Isuzu, there has been a lot of turnmoil there.

These holdings can add to GM's market share in Asia, if they count.

Most asian prefer Japanese and German because they are more realible and have better design. Most young Asian American drive Toyota, Honday, and the Nissan. Once they make more money they want to own and drive Lexus,BMW, Acura, Infiniti, MB or Audi.

And the other thing that is scary is most Asian American customer are very loyal to their brand, like the German auto fans. And another thing is that in most industrilize Asian country they love Japanese and German car.

I once ask my Asian friends why do most Asian prefer Japanese car? he say because their parents own them and they are very realiable, and that their parents tell them to buy Japanese because of their superior quality.

in the newly expanding markets overseas, people do not have the memories of the crappy cars gm produced in the 1980s.

gm is able to start with a "clean slate."
