BMW'S Hydrogen 7: Not as Green as it Seems

BMW is manufacturing the first series of hydrogen fueled cars. They're not as green as they seem. For a start, they're incredibly thirsty -- and they will put more strain on the environment than a heavy diesel truck.

There's a new method for fueling cars. Instead of the usual dispenser nozzle, a plastic hose about the size of a sewage pipe is attached to the vehicle. An automatic clasp closes automatically around the tank opening.

The airtight hose system was developed by Germany's Linde conglomerate and has already been installed at several German gas stations. It's designed to allow the average person to fill his or her car with liquid hydrogen in just eight minutes. Berlin is one of the few places that already disposes of such a filling station.
Last week, German car-maker BMW used the facility to present car testers with the first small series vehicle in the world that drives on both gas and liquid hydrogen. The "Hydrogen 7," will be part of BMW's upscale "7" series of vehicles, and BMW is now carefully preparing to make the new car available to customers.

Starting in March, the car will be delivered to about 100 celebrities, but so far BMW is keeping mum about their names or what their leasing rates might be. The car's developers are hoping to gain insight into the practical reliability of a technology many consider the be all and end all of the car industry's ecologically clean and climate friendly future.

The Munich-based company is promising "sustainable mobility and sheer joy of driving," citing the car's 260 horsepower, 12-cylinder engine. The Hydrogen 7's standard combustion engine has been adapted to run on both liquid hydrogen and regular gasoline as well -- and tons of it. The company says the car will consume an average of 13.9 liters (3.7 gallons) per 100 kilometers (roughly 17 miles per gallon) using regular gasoline and a whopping 50 liters to drive the same distance when fuelled by hydrogen.

In other words, BMW has created an energy-guzzling engine that only seems to be environmentally friendly -- a farcical ecomobile whose only true merit is that of illustrating the cardinal dilemma of a possible hydrogen-based economy.

The problem is that hydrogen is in scarce supply and producing it requires vast amounts of energy. Climate-friendly production of liquid hydrogen on a large scale presupposes a virtually unlimited supply of ecologically produced electricity -- not something likely to materialize in the near future. That's why energy experts from the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy believe forcing the transition to a hydrogen-based economy within the next three to four decades is "not an ecologically sound" idea.

Storing the volatile energy source also requires energy and money. The only method that promises a reasonable storage life is liquid storage at temperatures below -253 degrees Celsius (-423 degrees Fahrenheit). The process of cooling the storage facility down to such a low temperature alone uses up to one-third of the energy contained in one fuel tank.

Volatile fuel

BMW's thermo-tank, specially designed to hold liquid hydrogen as well as regular gasoline, has the same diameter as the drum of a washing machine. It has a volume of 170 liters (45 gallons) and takes up half the trunk. But it can only hold eight kilograms (17.6 lbs) of the extremely light hydrogen fuel -- barely enough for a 200 kilometer (124 mile) trip. What's more, some of the tank's contents have to be released as they heat up and evaporate -- even the best insulation system can't keep temperatures down forever. After nine days, half the tank load has gone bad.

BMW's competitors are somewhat puzzled by the company's decision to adapt combustion engines -- known for their high fuel consumption -- so that they will run on a fuel as sensitive and problematic as liquid hydrogen. "We think it's non-sense," says Frank Seyfried, research director for hydrogen-based propulsion at Volkswagen.

With the exception of BMW, every car company out there is betting on a different technology: fuel cells, which transform hydrogen into electricity via a chemical process. The electricity generated in the process then drives the vehicle. This method promises far greater efficiency, but the current technology yields only modest driving performance. Test cars with fuel cell engines can produce between 50 and 90 kilowatts, but they consume only about 14 liters of hydrogen per 100 kilometers (62 miles) -- a fuel value corresponding to that of four liters (one gallon) of gasoline.

BMW's chief developer Klaus Draeger still thinks there's good reason not to shelve the combustion engine. "It's the only engine that meets our requirements in terms of dynamics," he explains.

And so, in creating the Hydrogen 7, BMW is announcing a future of putatively clean, full-throttle driving. The new car caters to the pleasing fantasy of customers spoiled by high-horsepower engines: That they can conform to ecological standards without making any sacrifices, burning "clean" fuel to their heart's content. Advertizing images display the Hydrogen 7 against a backdrop of wind turbines and solar panels.

But the image is one of deceit. Because the hydrogen dispensed at the new filling station is generated primarily from petroleum and natural gas, the new car puts about as much strain on the environment as a heavy truck with a diesel engine. Add the loss of environmental benefits involved in the production and transportation of the putatively clean fuel to the consumption of the car itself and you get an actual consumption corresponding to considerably more than 20 liters (5.3 gallons) of fossil fuel.

The environment isn't the only loser: Customers will also have to shell out a lot of money for their deceptive display of ecologically responsible driving. The current standard price for liquid hydrogen is 57 euro cents (0.73 US cents) per liter (0.3 gallons). And the price tag on a 100 kilometer (62 mile) drive in the Hydrogen 7, at a comfortable speed, is about €30 ($38).

Hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements on this planet in natural form. In the 7-Series, as I understand it, the emissions escaping through the exhaust pipe is mainly pure water vapor. How does PURE WATER VAPOR damage the Earth? I'm no scientist, but water vapor is harmless, I know that.

I think what the author meant by "hydrogen is in short supply" is that usable hydrogen for this application is in short supply. There's plenty in water but you need electricity to get it out. To sum it up, he's saying that while there's only water vapor coming out of the car's tailpipe, a lot more pollution needs to come out of the electric stations providing the power to make the usable hydrogen.

Electric cars have the same drawback. You're just moving the pollution from the tailpipe to the electric company's smokestack.

im going to have to agree, not because i drive a bmw this whole "article" sounds way to opinionated for it to have much fact in it at all. Its 2006 contrary to popular belief you can fool a few idiots, but all of us arent that shallow or dimwitted for that matter to simply buy into anything. the whole purpose of hydrogen based powerplants is to reduce the amount of gasoline being used, all this transportation, and still using fossil fuels sounds like a middle school argument in a college educated class. im assuming the whole intent of creating a hydrogen based v12 was to showcase bmw's techonology since for many automakers the "v12" is their most technologically advanced why not use the v12, and the flagship car as a way to "showcase" new technology. in response to the idiots on this site, that have a fun day whenever bmw creates a new techonology as a way to bash and find some illegitimate and poorly convieved argument to fight bmw who cares, get a life these are only cars, im sure if you were so passionate about hating brands (not just bmw, but gm, hell all american car companies or anything non japanese for that matter) im sure you could do lot. when ford created its hydrogen concept mustang some years ago it did the same used a high powered sports car just to show technology. and no matter how much horsepower it has a v12 engine that gets 17 mpg is an improvement over 11 or 12 these engines normally get and i still dont believe that information in the article is accurate, so next time come up with an argument that sounds educated, and not just some poor exercise in semantics and technicalities

Actually, they're using the V-12 in order to get enough power from it. Remember this isn't a regular run-of-the-mill gas V-12. If you're worried about power and gas consumption then I think the new Lexus LS600h addresses that. Apparently it will have V-12 power (HP in the mid 400s) but get gas mileage in the mid 20s.

This car focuses on a different fuel source than fossil fuels and what the article is trying to point out is that further up the line the technology is actually dirtier than todays diesels.

on the whole ls600h v12 substitute the point of having a v12 in a luxury sedan is not really the power its the fact that your driving a v12, so i really dont get the point or prestige of such a car, the power vs mpg great idea but it just sounds downmarket when you think of the reason people actually buy v12s. if buying a v12 was just about power people would never buy them, a v8, v10, or even turbo6 can get the same if not more power than most v12s out there, ls600 is an alternative to a typical v8 powered luxury sedan but dont see it as an alternative to a v12 luxury sedan

The cutting edge technology of hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines is not yet as efficient as its gasoline-powered cousin. Might this have something to do with the fact that the gasoline engine has 100 YEARS of R+D behind it? Maybe just a little?

Doen't anyone remember high school chemistry?

It has a lot to do with a little thing called a BTU which is a pure energy measurment. Hydrogen does not burn with as high a BTU unit as a fossel fuel so it takes a lot more of it to make the same amount of energy that gasoline or diesel fuel does. It also takes more of it to do the same thing. This is one of the points of the article. Ad to that the cost of producing the Hydrogen in the first place. I have written about this in this forum a few times. Most of the Hydrogen produced today is a byproduct of fossel fuels, so it really does not releive us of our dependence upon them. Secondly, the other methods of producing it require substantial amounts of electricity as stated in the article. Do we really want more nuclear power plants dotting the globe? What do MOST electric plants use to generate electricity to begin with? Answer: Coal and Natural gas, both petrolium products. Even I hadn't thought about the storage issues. How much refridgeration do you think it would take to keep Hydrogen as a liquid at -423 deg F during a Phoenix summer? How much energy does that take? How much battery or alternater juice from the car will be needed to keep a tank of it cold enough in the truck of a black sedan in a warm climate?

Elements can be converted to a gas, liquid, or a solid. The variable that changes that is simply temperature.

Lets just say the car ran on water. Water can be boiled to produce steam, frozen to produce ice or left in its natural state which is a liquid.

The natural state of Hydrogen is a gas correct? If liquid Hydrogen "boils" to a gas in the trunk of your parked car, what do you think will happen? That's why is has to be bled off and be vented to the atmosphere. If you don't vent it to the atmosphere you would have a trunk full of volatile Hydrogen gas. As soon as you touch the brake pedal and the tail lights come on.........BOOM! We might then consider renaming the company from BMW to Hindenburg.

Can you guys really be that STUPID ??

Which part of the fact that Petrol IC Engines have been in development for close to 100 years as opposed to 10 years max for Hydrogen Technology do you not get ??

These vehicles are NOT FOR SALE, they are for Testing and Research and the technology would get better as the Method for Extracting Hydrogen would Get Better (Some Mention of Solar Powered Solutions)

I am so glad the fate of Human Technological Progression was not left up to Guys as Simple as Yourselves, Because we would still be Living in Caves and Riding Horses.

The perception of many is that Honda,Toyota, and GM are the only companies working on potential solutions to the worlds energy and evironmental issues. This car is a PSA (public service announcement) from BMW to let the world know that the German auto industry is also working on them as well.

i think the low power thing is simply because it's anew techonology, they can't get more hp out of the hydrogen safely or with today's knowledge.
but things advance, they always do.
i expect in 10 years from now a 4.0 litre hydrogen engine they could get 280 hp, maybe less. doesn't sound too much but 10 years ago bmws 4.4 v8 got 280 hp.

How are we going to get the hydrogen without fossil fuels. The hydrogen engine isn't making the power because of problems of putting it into cylinders. Hydrogne makes sense in a fuel cell but not in a piston engine.

nuclear power could used, nowadays its far safer, and relatively green. hydroelectric too, all good power sources. france uses many nuclear power stations,, and its train system is very green because of this.

I highly doubt half of the claims made in this article are tottally accurate. I mean if what the article claims is true, then who in the right mind would even attempt to put this hydrogen 7 into production, and then on top of that try and market it to the public as a green machine!

I know the technology is still in it's early stages, but if it in fact does as much damage to the environment as a diesel truck, BMW wouldn't be putting it into production as a clean alternative...It wouldn't put it in production at all!

Truth is you can't win when it comes to the pollution game...Like others have said you just move the pollution from the tailpipe to the factory, even with electric cars, fuel cells, and so on, you still have to mine up the special metals that make up the battery or other technological components. Then they say mining's an evil practice...It's elogical & ridiculous as Green Peace is.

If i was to buy a brand new 7 series I wouldn't get a hydrogen. If you want to talk about prestigue, i feel there's nothing prestige about owning a high level luxury saloon if you're going to have to worry about fuel economy. We all know the Maybach's, RR's, Bentley's , owners do not care about fuel as much. Why? simply because their trips are relatively short. Why do i say that? well, the people who own such vehicles usually fly long distance. On a road trip they may use an alternative vehicle such as an SUV. SUV is just as bad as a V12 luxury saloon in fuel consumption. If the person is so concerned about the whole "GREEN" thing they wouldn't buy a hydrogen car and still have a V8 luxury SUV in the driveway. It just would be conflicting.imo

OK, here are some facts to clear the waters...

This engine BURNS hydrogen. If you burn a mixture of hydrogen and air, water AND NO2 are produced. If this mixture is burned at an equivalence ratio of 1 ("Stoich") tons of NOx are produced... badd. If mixed with water, Nitric acid is also produced.. bad as well.

For this reason, H2 must be burned very very lean (Less than half of stoich). What's the problem with this? Less power per cylinder! The only options are to increase displacement or turbocharge. In BMW's case, they have upped the displacement.

It is true that H2 has the highest energy content per unit mass. However, when you convert that to energy per unit mole (THE unit for chemists), gasoline has nearly twenty times the energy per kmol.

As it is known (Thank you, Heidelburg) that hydrogen ignites very easily. It takes roughly 10 times less energy than hydrocarbons. This makes controling the ignition of hydrogen very hard, since hot spots in the cylinder could cause pre-ignition. The laminar flame speed of hydrogen is also much much faster than HC's, so timing can be an issue.

Regardless, I applaud BMW for at least attempting to produce this vehicle. Of course it'll have some funny quirks like the fuel container, gas milage, power, etc. Look back at any revolutionary car (Old Chrysler jet engine cars, original hybrids)... pretty goofy, huh? But the ideas paved the way for great advances.

Here's the combustion of H2:

H2 + 1/2(O2+3.76N2) --> H2O + 1.88 N2

The air/fuel ratio (unit mass) for H2 is 34.33:1 (Gas is around 14.7)

One a molar basis, however, the ratio is 2.4:1 . (Gas is about 47:1)


Heating values:

H2 - 120 MJ / kg
HC - 42 MJ / kg

SO: On a molar basis (H2 = 2 kg/kmol and HC = 114 kg / kmol):

H2 - 240 MJ / kmol
HC - 4228 MJ / kmol

SO, since one kmol of each H2 or HC is burned per cycles, more energy is containted in the gasoline.
