Mercedes vs. Consumer Reports

Mercedes vs. Consumer Reports
The luxury carmaker is not happy with recent rankings that appeared in the 2007 New Car Preview.

By Alex Taylor III, Fortune senior editor
November 20 2006: 9:11 AM EST

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- There is an old saying in the newspaper business that you shouldn't pick a fight with somebody who buys ink by the gallon.

That hasn't stopped Mercedes-Benz from taking a few swipes at Consumer Reports over some very damaging reviews of Mercedes vehicles.

First some background: For the 2007 edition of its New Car Preview, Consumer Reports surveyed its six million subscribers about what serious problems they had with the cars they own. Some 1.3 million responded and the results weren't good for Mercedes-Benz.

Here's a brief blow-by-blow: In a listing of the least reliable luxury cars, based on 2006 models, three of the six cars are Mercedes: the old S-class (prior to the recent redesign), the CLS and the E-class Sedan.

Same thing in sport cars. Mercedes hogged three of the seven slots for least reliable: the SL, the CLK and the V6 SLK.

Among mid-sized SUVs, the M-class, a quality disaster when it first came out, still ranks as the least reliable in its grouping.

Other luxury manufacturers turn up on the least reliable list, with BMWs, Jaguars and Cadillacs sprinkled throughout.

But what is striking about Mercedes' performance is its consistency. Of the 11 models reviewed by Consumers, none are recommended. Seven are left off of the list because of poor reliability; the remaining four are considered too new to predict.

Mercedes has the worst record of any automaker with that many models. For a brand that claims to be "engineered like no other car in the world," that is fairly frightening.

"They understand the problems and they are fixing some of them, but they have a long way to come," says David Champion, director of automotive testing at Consumers.

I personally take CR with a grain of salt. I read it, sure. But anyone who lets CR choose their car for them is missing a lot of life.

CR readers/voters are of the obsessive/compulsive variety, and that's what certain people want. But Mercedes drivers in this forum have said Consumer Reports overblows certain problems that are not an issue.

Very similar to Ralph Nader, who I never take seriously and that is if I actually listen to something he has to say.

You mean to tell me that CR got 1.3 million Americans to voice their opinions on THEIR mercedes vehicles? CR got 1.3 million responses back, and I think (I could be wrong) that the vast majority of the responses are not repsonses to Mercedes. In my family, there are 4 benzes and they all perform beautifully. An SL, an S, an E, and a C, NO PROBLEMS.

I drive an S550, have so for 8 months now and my car has not had any problems. My daughter drives a Mercedes C280 and the only thing that has gone wrong was a faulty antenna. I'll continue to buy Mercedes because I've had nothing but good experiences with them.

Consumer Reports? Never paid much attention to them anyway.

I've had the same experience with my '00 Audi A6, my son's '98 Audi A4 1.8T quattro (which we bought used and traded in), my '05 S4 Cabriolet and my '06 A3 2.0T, which I've had for eleven months.

The reliability thing is getting old, especially when most German cars are trouble-free.

Imagine how much higher could be Mercedes' prices, profits and sales if Mercedes managed just a little improvement in quality.

Mercedes strategy is to expand its line of cars and SUVs in order to attract new buyers. Mercedes has long been elements critical to its brand like reliability. Consequently Mercedes no longer holds a big advantage in customer retention versus Lexus or BMW.

In less than 10 years Mercedes management has weakened the brand more than could possibly be imagined. It took 100 years to bring Mercedes to the top of the auto world and now its just another luxury brand.

Instead of expanding the vehicle line, and introducing yet more engine and body configurations, Mercedes should be holding back engineering resources in order to ensure better quality of existing vehicles.

After all some reports in the US have Lexus with a widening advantage over Mercedes in terms of customer retention.

Sorry my keyboard made a mess of the second paragraph - guess that means don't put me in charge of quality!

It should have read "Mercedes strategy is to expand its line of cars and SUVs in order to attract new buyers. Mercedes has been ignoring elements critical to its brand image like reliability and pricing. Consequently Mercedes no longer holds a big advantage in customer retention versus Lexus or BMW. If a manufacturer gets fewer repeat buyers then it has to troll for new buyers just to maintain market share."

Mercedes is the worst POS vehicle you could buy for buck, period and end of story.

Give it a few more years and Lexus, Infinti and Acura will be soon dominating. It is just a matter of time.

Only main player left from the land of Weinerschintzel will be BMW and that's it.

Yeah right, I remember back during the 80's here in SoCal when white guys wanted to learn to speak Japanese and know how to hold chop sticks.

Lexus is the only one of those that will ever compete with the big German machines.

In fact, look at the front of the S-Class and the LS460 side by side and you will notice the Merc is a real machine and copies no one.

Some of these Lexus fans are simply hilarious.

They're the new BMW fans of AutoSpies- mindless, idiotic rantings that try to promote their brand, but make it seem even more boring to own one.

Life is about drama. I don't want Lexus to take the drama out of life. There is no such thing as a perfect car, much less a perfect world.

All mags are biased and Cr is no exception. Someone on the staff probably wanted a new S class for free and MB said to shove it and hence the report. Free speech, paid speech.

Yep that's right. That would be the editor in chief Mr. Tom Riddle. His bias goes back all the way to the early 90's when Toyota hooked him up with Cindy Crawford for a night. In exchange he just had to make Toyota and Lexus the Consumer Reports' "top pick" for the next two decades.

Im sorry, but I cannot believe what CR says. I would rather have an expert from another automotive magazine tell me how good a car is rather than fickle consumers. Also, as an external example, CR says that Jaguar is on the least reliable list. Didn't Jag just get put on the most reliable list from some other automotive magazine? Come on now. I've seen the new S class turn Mercedes haters in lovers (seriously). In the article it was stated that one of the main mercedes problems was brake dust. GIVE ME A BREAK. Oh and also some flukes with their BRAND NEW 7 speed. Things happen with new devices, Merc fixed it (so they said).

Man I'm with you, Neutral. You just can't trust those damn ignorant, cranky consumers. What right do they have to complain about problems with faulty products they happened to have bought and paid for with their hard-earned money? They ought to keep their opinions to themselves and let the experts do all the talking and comparing.

I just don't see how anyone can argue with deep, steel-trap-like logic such as yours. Keep up the good work!

I know that here in Denmark, where we have a lot of MB driving around as taxis (diesels) they have complained a lot about MB, Among one thing is rust, another more important one was the brakes. Before the facelift of the E they hat these brake problems, now they have returned to wellknown systems.

OK. Here is the big problem in a nutshell with you Euro-only guys:

You feel that Lexus is not a worthy competitor. I love cars in general. I have owned or do own various Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, and even a Jaguar. I plan on purchasing an Audi R8 after the silly dealer markup period subsides.

I don't care what car you prefer, but I just get frustrated when Lexus is knocked for no reason. BMW and Mercedes view the Lexus brand as a competitive product, why can't you?

Why the hell does every news item have to revert back to Lexus vs. the Germans?

And for crying out loud people, don't take crap posted here too seriously! This place should be fun.

Honestly, do you believe the Lexus trolls on this site--the ones with the bad spelling, the ALL CAPS POSTS, the common profanity--do you really believe these trolls actually drive Lexus? They're Toyota fanboys, emphasis on boys.

The German car fans on this site are driving German cars. They're not pubescent idiots like your Lexus crew--Will excepted, because he comes off as someone who actually makes enough money to drive the cars he knows about.

Answer, if you take issue with that, then lump yourself in with those fanboy losers. Your asking the stupid question of "why is Lexus unpopular here" is hard to believe. Take a look at who's getting removed from the site. No one cares if you don't like German cars.

I'm not defending the pro-Lexus idiots. I'm just saying that Lexus has a well-deserved place in the auto world.

I do not have a dislike of German cars, owning a few is proof enough to that fact.

You say the Lexus fans here aren't Lexus owners. I bet a lot of them aren't, but the same is true of the pro-German camp.

I hope you don't judge Lexus fans by the morons who occasionally post here. I sure don't think the weiners who bicker in the Audi vs. BMW posts are representitive of the best of their fans.

It is a brand on the move with hot current (S6, S8, RS4)and future products (R8 TT, A5), best interiors, does not copy anybody stylewise and you do not see yourself coming and going...and does not rely on a mom/grandmother car (RX330) to achieve "sales awards".
