The last Toyota sports car
Toyota will mark the end of its production of the MR-S (MR-2 Spyder) with a run of 1000 limited “V Edition” vehicles. The cars will go on sale from the 9th of January 2007 in Japan only, with actual production expected to end at the end of that same month. The current model MR-S was released back in 1999 and remains as Toyota’s only sports model since the decline of the Celica in April this year.

The MR2 to me was never a serious sports car, it was a FUN CAR along the lines of the Mazda Miata and perhaps the Hyundai Coupe.

No way the Supra is going to go head to head with the Skyline GTR,not the fairlady Z(350z)!!It's rumored to have an avalible V8 with 450hp and a V6 with 350hp..

I'm guessing anyone criticizing the driving/handling of this car has never driven one. I owned one for three years. 0-60 in about 6 seconds. Amazingly agile, best stick shift I've ever used. It beat the hell out of its only real competition at the time, the Miata. I only traded it because of the ONE legit criticism, not enough storage. But my car drove two of use on a two week road trip to Canada, in December, crossing the Rocky Mountains both directions. It handled it all-luggage, snow, two people, a flat tire on a slipper bridge, getting passed by huge, speeding SUVs kicking up rocks (and then passing the SUVs an hour later as they were rolled over snowy embankments). Yep, I will miss the dear Mister 2. And people wonder why I love Toyotas so much...

toyota just doesnt know how to make a sports car (not including supra) i mean they r too busy making ugly camrys. i think i like the ls460 its much better then all the previous ones

i suspect among the reasons the mr2 and even the more practical celica hasn't sold in big numbers, is the excellent alternate choice. namely, the Corolla S.
basically the same motor as in the Lotus Elise, less just a few hosses. at less than HALF the price!

i have a corolla LE, with again the same basic motor and even lower state of tune. but with the VVTi, STILL a fun dual-personality engine and car.

in like manner, how many acura rsx (?) sales have been lost to the excellent civic Si? now available in less sporty but MORE PRACTICAL 4 dr body.

The Corolla S is not fun- it looks like a joke, to me. Civic Si is so much better, as well as the GTI five-door. The Celica is more of a poser car, bud judging by toyotamarc's post, the MR2 was a better car than I thought.

looks are not that big a deal when you have one of the most potent 1.8 engines made. as i said, basically the same motor as in the lotus elise.

the sorta innocuous body style makes it that much better a "sleeper."

the MR2 is one of the best!

hard to understand why it hasn't sold in larger numbers. worst complaint i ever heard or read about it, was miniscule luggage space.

well the same is true of sport bikes.

OBSERVATION: with the advent of sport sedans from just about everyone, the appeal of TWO-door sporty and even true sports cars seems to have plummeted.

i know for myself, while 10 - 20 years ago i would've always chosen a sporty 2-dr, these days 4-doors can easily handle from 90 - 100% as well. and you get all the SPACE and PRACTICALITY of a sedan body.

even with trucks: i'd never go back to a standard cab.
