finally! I've been waiting for a diesel-hybrid. Hopefully we'll start seeing more gas-hybrid's replaced by these. Every little thing we can do to increase gas mileage helps.

But at some point it won't matter that you've built a diesel/hybrid/hydrogen/runs on water/solar car.

Engineers also need to be spending their time on making cars as a whole last longer and be more reliable and not just able to get people from her to the moon on half a tank.

MDalle, VW/Audi isn't a car don't you know? Its a trashcan on wheels. That's the reason why I don't see them on the road instead in a car-dumps all the time. Audiwagon looks like a chromed-out trash can lying sideways on a street with a wide mouth opened to collect trash as I have stated before and I stated again.

AM A LITTLE DISSAPOINTED IN TOYOTA HERE. WHY INVEST IN DIESEL HYBRIDS WHEN A GASOLINE HYBRID IS SO MUCH BETTER?

Because Toyota is not as ignorant as the person who posted this. Ignorance is not name calling; it simply means this person doesn't know anything about what has happened in the diesel tech field in the last ten years. Most Americans don't have a clue what modern diesel power is about. Most folks don't even know they are driving or riding a modern diesel when they test drive--if they are not told ahead of time.

And in what WAY is gasoline power better than diesel.

Diesels get 30% better fuel economy--avg.

Diesels emit as little as 20% less greenhouse gases.

Diesels emit fewer levels of CO and HCs.

Modern diesels will be on par with gassers with respect to particulates of matter (PM) with ULSD fuel and DPF (diesel particulate filters).

Diesels can all use alternative fuels without conversion, special make, or modifcication. What gasser can do that? Diesel alternative fuels do not hurt fuel economy. What spark-ignition alternative fuel can do that? Current FFV vehicles lose 25% fuel economy when running E85 versus the same cars running 100% gasoline. This means that with gas power, we're starting out with 30 percent worse fuel economy than we could achieve with comparable diesels; then we're going to worsen its stance against diesels by using an alternative fuel that loses another 25 percent

Diesels have superior torque meaning even further fuel economy gains can be achieved throug smaller engine displacements than is required for spark-ignition engines.

Modern diesels are only slightly louder at idle, and are often quieter during acceleration and cruise than comparable gas engines.

Does anyone really believe that if gas-power were efficient enough to put in medium and heavy-duty trucks, that those trucks would be quiet if they were gas-powered.

The Isuzu trucks are loud because they are trucks.

Modern diesel engine technologies for cars result in very quiet, smooth, fast, and refined automobiles. In fact, 51% of all new car registrations this year in Europe, will be diesel powered. The percentage is even higher in some luxury segments where diesels are preferred for their refined performances.

Americans need to learn about modern diesel technologies before spouting off about things they no nothing about. Or better yet; go drive an E320 BlueTec that gets 37 mpg on the hwy with 218 hp and 388 lbs of torque. Then come back and tell us how loud modern diesel engines are.

You Toyota guys are a weird bunch. First you calls diesels crap and stinky, but when Toyota makes them, oh my God, it's the next best thing since sliced bread. If Bluetec had been invented by Toyota, you'd be walking all over it kissing it and proclaiming it to be the best thing ever.

I've got news for you. Toyota's diesels in Europe are a joke. They're not even close to the German standards in refinement, power output and emissions.

My advice. Get real. Bluetec is far from finished. Hybrids are the systems that are OVERRATED. At least diesel-hybrid is a better way to go.

Toyota is good at diesel techniques too, much better than you thought. Guess you never heard of Toyota D-4D diesel engine, the world cleanest diesel engine (now used in European Lexus IS220d, Toyota Avensis:
