Hybrid Success Limited to Toyota
Even in these days of topsy-turvy fuel prices, automakers have learned that slapping a hybrid badge on a vehicle doesn't automatically guarantee strong sales.

U.S. sales of hybrid vehicles through October show the segment evolving into a respectable niche. Not counting the Saturn Vue Green Line, which just went on sale, 211,134 hybrids were sold through October, up from 171,523 in the comparable 2005 period. Hybrids still account for just 1.5 percent of new vehicle sales.

But some hybrids, such as the Honda Accord, aren't flying off dealer lots.

That is true, the Toyota hybrids are decent, others provide no real benefits to the consumer at all.

Well yes, my bad. I just read through his post quickly and it came across as "Toyota propaganda".

Even I must admit that the hybrids from Toyota are A1.

Ford got a permenant licence for the Escape Hybrid to be a taxi in NYC. They already have a ton of orders. Should help.

I get a little disappointed with the auto press at times because it seems that many journalists are pushing their own personal agenda, i.e. "green" vehicles are the enemy of cool car-dom. They want them to lose in the market. A more balanced approach to a review would be to take a look at these things, realize that they are mostly bought by non-enthusiasts, and see them as they are. Sure, they may only give you another 5-10 mpg, and sure, they will get a lot better over the next decade, but why trash them? The best thing for the automotive industry is for people to encourage innovation in all areas, and hybrid are genuine innovation that is a heck of a lot more interesting that the latest V-8 stuffed into a chassis and with a new sticker on the back.

hybrid over gas = manufacturing and price PREMIUM
diesel over gas = mfgr'g and price PREMIUM
diesel hybrid = DOUBLE cost premium.

but if anyone can work the numbers and bring a diesel hybrid to market at a reasonable price, TOYOTA is the most viable candidate.
