REVIEW: BMW X5 4.8i

REVIEW: BMW X5 4.8i
BMW’s latest offering is the kind of car that will make your neighbors jealous. Built to such a refined standard, swathed in luxury and providing the performance you’d expect from the company with the slogan “sheer driving pleasure,” the new X5 does everything well, right up to the point the road ends. After that, you’re on your own.

Problem with the X5 is that its not fresh enough. It is better than the Q7 on the road i have to say.
I prefer the styling of the Q7.. it looks meaner, and bigger, but elegant and proportional at the same time.
But we all have different tastes so no point in arguing

Yeah, oddly enough I think the Q7 is beautiful. Very different from anything else out there.

Well, it was until last month. Then the MDX came out and blatantly copied the rear end. Who would pay $44K for an MDX when the Q7 starts at $39K? It's quite a bargain. I was very surprised that it costs less than a $42K base A6 3.2 FWD, which not only doesn't have quattro, but is less powerful and smaller.

how does this suv handle compared to the Range Rover Sport? I am planning to add an SUV.

i have driven the rr sport supercharged. impresive car.. it does not handle like the last gen x5 4.8is. At all. it is a lot noiser (supercharger whine) and does not possess the same response as this car.. i can only imagine the new one is a lot better. But i do liek th elooks of the RR sport. looks mean in balck with the supercharged mesh grille. pure evil

I too have driven the RR S-S. I wasn't very impressed. It's slower than an RX350, guzzles gas, and weighs almost the same as a normal, eight-inches-longer Range Rover.

But it is SO good-looking.

The RR Sport is the ultimate SUV on the road..It actually could go off-road and looks too good to be true..The interior is so nice, touch-screen, everything is within your reach, and the prestige factor is above and beyond..

This shitty BMW is yet another ugly car..

there will NOT be any challenge to this X5. (not even the previous model for that matter)

If only HondAcura developed a V8 for commerical use....

I think this vehicle is a tremendous achievement especially when compared to the Porsche Cayenne or Range Rover Sport. However it is still not cavernous inside, so many families will still prefer larger SUVs.

Is there still going to be an "X7" with a longer wheelbase and a larger third row of seats?

i believe this has a third row of seats... it looks small from the outside, but its huge on the inside... just like BMWs been saying. I saw one at the dealer, theres a real good amount of space.

I have an X5, and I can assure you, three adults do fit comfortably!!

Very nice. Not totally changed. It still has the outgoing X5 look but more refined with more rounder body panels. Superb!

This is not an SUV, this is an SAV, it failed the requirement of being a sports utility vehicle, however, it is a nice SAV. I think i may need some more time to get used to it, but the old one is amazing i have to say.
As for the comparison between this and the RR sport, i don't think there is any comparison, the X5 is nicer, more, powerful, handles much better and does everything better, I have driven both and base my opinion on that, however i like the new RR vogue supercharged, this one is quite fast but it is not the same class as the RR sport and the X5 4.8 to compare. LS 470 ALL the way and Landcruiser VX_R (this one comes in the gulf)

"proper" suvs are practically dead. SAVs and crossovers are the next generation. bye bye america's car industry...

"I think i may need some more time to get used to it, but the old one is amazing i have to say."

What is there to get used to? It's barely been Bangle-ised. It's just an evolution of the current model, and IMHO it's fabulous. Everyone else thinks so!

I don't love the rims in the top pictures, but the new X5 is beautiful. I love the current one, but it's definitely gotten old. This one cleans up the old-ness very nicely. Also, this interior is somehow a major improvement over the 5er, and the current X5.

Maybe we'll need a truck soon? Hmm...

That's like saying do we really need a 500hp M5...if you don't know the answer to that, you're on the wrong site... ;)

At least the RR Sport can tackle the rough stuff...

The X5 is basically a tall car.

Undoubtedly nice, but a bit of a poser car.

Do any of these SUV's or SAV's really need to tackle the 'rough stuff'? Please, 99% are just image anyway. A RR Sport has mighty large wheels/small tires to really be an 'off roader' but the image sure says so..marketing..
