LA Auto Show 2006: Lexus to build 400 LX470 Limited Editions for US

I've never respected the Lexus LS. IMO, you should get a Landcruiser and save tons of money while at the same time enjoying perhaps even better offroad qualities.

The LX is pointless IMHO.

LS should be LX.

if they make 400 and sell 200 is it realy limited?

I know the design is aging and the fuel economy for the LX is not so hot, but it still a nice vehicle.

If I was to design a car, one of the first questions in my mind would be "Why would people buy this car?" Because it's interesting, beautiful, stylish, fast?

the Land Cruiser is THE most capable vehicle OFF and ON road. the LX adds lexus prestige.

All our esteemed Autospies readers know that when your car is all but losing interest, you put out a design change and call it a limited edition. The funny thing is, these "exclusive" vehicles with their special badges and limited numbers are almost always left on the lot... 25th Anniversary Audi S4 rings a bell. There's nothing wrong with Lexus following this lame trend, but give the customer a little credit. Limited numbers don't mean anything. It's just an LX.

This reminds me of Honda... they always release a "Special Edition" package for the Accord right before they release the next generation version of the car. I think they did/do the same thing with the Civic also.

In fact a lover of a vehicle should be thrilled when these special editions come out, because it means the next generation is just around the corner. Makes me excited.

why is it that everyone trashes the escalade, and other big suvs for their gas mileage and this big, old, box gets the exact same gas mileage 13, 17?

You said it yourself "old box". This is basically the same exact car that's at least 5-7 years old. Newer SUVs should be getting *better* gas mileage than a 5+ year old design.

no there is no excuse for a 4.7 liter v8 with 278 hp to get the same gas mileage as a full size heavy sub that has a 6.2 liter and 403 hp thats non sense. lexus or not, the old escalade gas mileage has not changed from old to new generation and the old one had a 6.0 345hp engine, and that car was just as old as this waste of metal, the point is it makes no sense

the land cruiser at least looks alright. this looks like the grill and lights were stuck on. it honestly looks so 1996.

Could be the ugliest luxury SUV on the road. Its not retro enough to be retro and its certainly not modern looking. Its just BLAH.

which asks the question. why would lexus want to add a limited addition model on a 10 year old car. seems pointless. wouldn't perfecting the new lx be of more use to them than fussing around with the old one?

They add a special edition to lure the last few buyers who want to feel like they have reason to buy a vehicle before the next one comes out.
It's a great strategy. And it should work well on a vehcile such as this, which has legendary heritage and status and will undoubtedly hold up well over the years. I mean is it just me, or do the last gen Slades and 'Gators look archaic already. The LX wont suffer the same fate. And buyers of this special edition will have the best of the bunch.

Because like you said some sucker [because they will most likely never ever take it off road] will pay 68,000 for an underpowered gas guzzler [extreme] that is a 10 year old car.

I like the LX- I think it's somewhat stylish, and very luxurious on the inside.

But I don't see a need for a "Special Edition". My vote would be to kill the GX, get an optional seven-seat RX and get a new LX pronto.

Regarding most of the comments above:

1) The LX and the land cruiser are very different- everything from the paint, to the leather, the quality of carpeting, different seats, completely different dash, Mark Levinson stereo, totally different suspension, a much better warranty and the way you will be treated by Lexus dealers as opposed to Toyota dealers more than make up for the few thousand price differential.

2) There is a new LX waiting in the wings, and Lexus always does a SE of the outgoing model.

3) Our special editions do not sit around, but rather, sell like hotcakes.

4) This isn't "a couple of inches longer than the GX) It is about the same length but much wider and vastly more luxurious inside.

I agree with your comments....all I have to say is this:

Highest Customer Loyalty is synonum for Lexus brands for many years. You can't say that about any other brands, period. So you may praise bullshit here about how MY car is the best in the universe because it looks good, cost lots of cash and able to shift gears quickly..The meat and Potato is the customers being loyal to the brand year after year...which is the LEXUS.

Many German car fans here in the website are mostly fans of a small, dinky and fast little cars with a pocodotted paint job cars that take corners pretty good but lets get real here folks..This is the Lexus LX. Its brutally gigantic size and high level of safety and luxury is not for germanriceburner car fans, got it?

I doubt very much your special edition models all sell like hot cakes. I have been at Lexus dealerships year end and have seen the special editions left on the lot because they are in weird color combinations. Lexus propaganda...

Uhh, no, the LX and LC have almost identical dashboards. The LX only has wood as opposed to the LC's "aluminum look" plastic. Paint? Puhleez. Leather is the same in my mother's Camry as it is in my wife's car.

I'm not bashing on the car, you're just avoiding the truth. The cars are a plain re-badge, and there's no shame in admitting it. The LC is a nice car to rebadge, and it's a good platform for Lexus to slap on some wood, a navigation system and a different badge and jack up the price $15,000.

Do you mean like the SportDesign GS with a saddle leather interior? It sure was hard for me to find mine a few years back when it came out.

The LX is one of the Few luxury SUV's that is comfortable to drive onroad, and is amazing offroad. The g500 is way to rigid for everyday driving compared to the LX470. In my opinion the LX470 can outdo a Range Rover offroad.

I agree that it is time for a redesign, but lexus has sold a alot of these fancy landcruisers to people who love them and will but the new design when they come out.

As for the GL and Q7 How can you bash the LX and praise these vehicles. The GL looks like a station wagon on steroids while the Q7 is as a whole really isnt that great looking. Honestly besides the RR all the large suv's have many items to be desired as far as looks go.

The LX is a very capabable offroader and while I would more than likely never own one, I can't blame anyone for owning one over the Q7 or GL. Mercedes should have stuck true to the concept of the G instead of turning it into a soccer ball carrier. I may have to hang on to mine untill they decide to get back to their roots.

Umm...the Mercedes GL is pretty capable offroad, and so is the Q7. Stop your fanboy bullshit.

I currently own a 2000 LX with over 80K miles and used to have a 1999 Land Cruiser prior to that. The service you get at Lexus makes it definetely worth the premium over the TLC. As mentioned above the leather and suspension are upgraded over the Land Cruiser. I have taken the LX offroad and it has better ground clearance than my stock 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

Also it has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I also bought a 2001 BMW 740i around the same time as the LX and sold it a couple if years ago after a bunch of problems started happening soon after the warranty ran out. I have no problem owning the LX long after the the warranty has expired.

I think my LX is great except for fuel economy - but at least the tank is fairly large. As noted before on this website I thought about trading it for the MB GL450 but was shocked by the lack of reversing camera, and poor navigation system on the MB. The MB may be a newer design but it lacks basic equipment suitable for this size of vehicle.

I can wait for the new LX570 due at the end of 2007 calendar year. That's when I'll trade the LX470.

Ohh Ahh, a "limited edition"! So they spent a wopping $50 to make it unique and charge the customer $410? Okaaay, marketing at its finest here. I think you will still find them on dealer lots 6 months from now.

Try ordering a Q7 S-line with the new 21" wheels and Alcantara headliner if you'd really like something "special" in the SUV market.

I sure as hell would hope the new Q7 would be better in everyway to the years old LX.

But, I sure wouldn't make that a bragging point either.

Most of these people putting down the LX probaly drive honda accords and nothing bigger, Yeah the other suv's are good for soccer mom's, well not really cause there is not one recent suv that has came out that had a decent third row seat, they are all cramped. The LX is for those who need the big car and HAVE THE MONEY to get it, it does sell well, I see them all the time on the road, take the time to look in them and drive one, your opinions might change, the Benz and Audi and New X5 are great suv's I have owend plenty of bimmer's and also escalades, sometimes you need a real mans Suv with out buying a monster truck, point made.

i've seen more than a few LXs, and we don't even HAVE a lexus dealer in my town! closest is 350 miles away; next closest, some 3000 miles.

(NO bmw dealers here either. there USED to be one some years back. prob'ly had too many unhappy owners to stay in business.)

we do have an MB store. and i actually know a few people who own MLs. they enjoy the ride, but HATE the niggling problems that never seem to end.

apparently some people feel it's well worth going 350 miles away to get a RELIABLE lexus LX. and they are ALSO feel secure enuff, to NOT have to be so close to the dealer's service dept.

The current LX is old, and over its production years, changes were subtle to most people. Lexus definitely added more gadgets in the most recent years. But, a limited edition is just made purely for a marketing purpose nothing more. On the road, I think most people won't really care about the LX "limited edition". To me, a limited LX feels just like a limited edition Corolla.
