Showoff: VW Touareg Tows 155-Ton 747 Jet
WOLFSBURG, Germany — It's not as if you
are ever going to be in a position to use your Volkswagen
Touareg V10 TDI to pull a Boeing 747 out of
a ditch.
But the German automaker thought it would be
an interesting exercise to see if such a feat is even
possible. At the very least, it made for some interesting
photos.
The event took place at the Dunsfold Aerodrome
in England. To make the Touareg able to tow the
plane, VW engineers first increased the SUV's weight
so "the power of the engine [could] be converted into
propelling force." Steel balls and steel plates were
distributed in the SUV for an additional weight of
9,579 pounds. The total weight of the Touareg in this
case amounted to 15,498 pounds.
Other modifications included increasing air pressure in the standard Michelin tires, limiting the maximum speed of
the vehicle to protect the tires and replacing the V10 TDI transmission with the transmission of the Touareg V8.
An extra device was used to hook up the plane to the standard trailer hitch. "Based on the maximum torque of the
V10 TDI (550 pound-feet) and the transmission ratio, the engineers had previously calculated that the Touareg would be
able to put approximately 200 tons into motion," said VW in a statement.
Turns out they were correct. With the four-wheel-drive control in the low setting and the automatic transmission in

It could never pull it out of a ditch, then it would be up against gravity...to pull on a straight line all it has to do is overcome static friction...i saw a strong man competition where a guy towed a 747 by himself. It's just an illusion for a Touareg a lot of its competitors could probably do it as well

and plus, sh*tty little tractors do this on a daily basis...the V10 Touareg is a beast but this stunt isnt as impressive once you look beyond the bs

Yes but, those tractors are made to pull jets around all day long and it just goes to show how much VW cares about their customers in building such an SAV.

Props to VW and all VW owners should stick their heads out thier windows and let out a Booyah for VW!

vYeah the TDI can pull a 747...but my VQV6 Pathfinder could probably pull a 737, but I'm not bragging about it...if i were to ruin my truck, i could drag a 747 for a hundred feet, wihout ten thousand pounds in ballast...I've ripped a 3500 pickup out of a snowbank without breaking a sweat, yet my neighbor's Touareg can't get up their driveway in the snow with it's weak road tires..what's the point?

no. It is not a real 747. It is stripped and used in movies. I don't think it can fly.

They're just trying to impress, anyway i completly agree with u Autoegr525, a lot of its competitors CAN do it. On other thoughts it can be a fake 747 as its paint scheme means nothing to me and does not refer to any airline so the possibility is there.

deinfe fake? Does it belong to an airline? no. It was actually the plane used in the Casino Royale movie. Those engines are "safety" engines as to not damage real ones. But regardless of the ownership, shape or general composition of the plane it still weighs 155-tons... It's like the trick question "which weights more, a ton of bricks or a ton of feathers?" Doesn't matter, it's still moving that much weight.

keep it in your pants chewy...to pull 747's day after day after day and not break down you need a huge, simple diesel engine that will be reliable and cheap to maintain. Sure the TDI is powerful, but you missed my point, that this is just an illusion.

this is such a bad photoshop. i mean, look at the twin engines, they look more like siamese ones to me. they arent meant to sit side by side each other, they are spread apart on each wing. this is all BS.

BTW i add something more which is if Toureg can tow one 747 weighing 155 Tonnes,the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and ML AMG can tow more than that.Maybe two 747s.

no, because the cayenne and ML have less torque, which is what you need for pulling.

The Cayenne and ML AMG have the torque, but they have it at higher RPM's and that will mean a harder time. The diesel Touareg V10 has large torque reserves at low RPM. Enough said.

BMW 530i trust me if the touareg did it, the Landcruiser would do it with no problem whatsoever, I have one and i know its capabilities. It's amazing, the best SUV i've ever tried.
