Are There Really Sleeper Values in the Used Car Market?

Quick, print this out! This information will self-destruct! How else will we keep everyone's greasy mitts off our beloved "sleeper deals?" Not sleeper in the hot-rod sense, though some of these cars are certainly capable. No, by "sleeper deals" we mean the great iron out there that's overlooked, rewarding to drive, fun to maintain and modify (if that's your thing) and most importantly, stupid cheap. Of course there are far too many to list in a single article, so perhaps this document will take on a life of it's own and become a living entity. Like Wikipedia, or Swamp Thing. Here are the first five that spring to mind.

One on the list "W Platform GMs"

I really miss my '01 Intrigue GLS. Excellent car, awesome engine (can we say shortstar), but it just had too many little quirks for my liking:
- battery leaked 3 different times
- heated seat switches needed to be replaced
- power windows just stopped working one day, then back to normal 2 days later
- the lights would pulsate at night, not much, but enough to annoy you.

All of those were minor glitches, but keep adding enough of them up and it makes it too much. What's sad is i know that engine would have far outlasted the car. Ended up getting rid of it about a year ago.

wow, you have a good memory (i think i mentioned that a few articles back). Yes, I ended up with my fiance's old '95 Camry (she on the other hand is driving the '04 330i sport). But for the price i paid (read: free), I can't argue.

I guess these are fine if you only want to spend a grand or so on a car.
IF you really want a great high end used car, look at Mercedes AMG cars 2002 and before (before Mercedes quality tanked). Used car values have crashed due to MBs recent quality problems, but these cars are bulletproof, and can be had for a fraction of the cost of a new AMG.

The last version of the Olds Aurora 4.0 w/the 4.0L V8 is still a pretty decent car to look. I was going to purchase a used one for my wife and took a long test drive. It was loaded with every option and drove great. She didn't like the overall size and felt that the car was too big for her. But it was a small step down from a Seville STS as far as options and luxury was concerned.
