Yikes: Ford to Burn Through $17 Billion in Cash by 2009
Ford Motor Co. says it expects to burn through some $17 billion in cash from 2007 to 2009, with more than half of the expenditures occurring next year.

We expect cumulative automotive operating-related cash outflows of about $10 billion and cumulative cash expenditures for restructuring actions of about $7 billion, Ford says in a 10-K regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission

The auto makers expects to have about $38 billion in cash at the end of the year, including the $18 billion in new financing it currently is seeking.

Ford also says it should have about $4 billion in automotive cash inflows over the 2007-2009 period, which “reflect the use of $3 billion in long-term VEBA (Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Assn.) assets, proceeds from planned divestitures of Aston Martin (Lagonda Ltd.) and Automotive Protection Corp., offset partially by pension contributions.”

Yeah there you go, they should hire you to be CEO, you sound like you have it all figured out...of course a prerequisite is that you must be able to spell "liars" and "thieves" before your first day of work.

This is just absolutely hideous or outrageous ! what the heck? Ford plan to burn 17 billion in cash from 2007-2009? that alot of "Freakin" $$$$money$$$ we are talking folks. I doubted if all of this money is actually going where it says it going. I know that Ford is having alots of new model coming out, but lets be realistic, it "Not" like every new model they release is going to a hit.

Ford did not get into this mess in one day or one or two years. It took BMW, MB, and Audi a very long time to get to the top. Same with Toyota/Lexus,Honda/Acura and Nissan/Infiniti it also took them awhile to get to the top.

I don't think Ford could fixed all of their problems that they are facing within two years. I mean it possible, they could get back on track but it going to take them a very long time. If you look now day there are so much competition from oversea automaker. Not just from German, Japan, and Korea as well. And to make it worse China and India is jumping into the bandwagon this for the American Dollar.

Very true! Ford has unrealistic expectations. If they regain momentum by 2015 and are truly producing quality products, I'll be blown away.

This article is so misleading it's not even funny. 001, you make it sound like you have $17 bil in your wallet and you're going to spend it in 3 years and then it's going to be gone. This isn't allowance money here, this is CORPORATE RESTRUCTURE.

You people fail to realize that cash outflow has very little weight on earnings. You also must consider cash inflow and the value added by restructuring the corporation. Fortune 500 companies like IBM, Microsoft, etc. have cash outflows in the billions of dollars annually, but they are profitable.

I see this as a good move for Ford, finally owning up to the problem and trying to address it. Their problem is corporate structure. The hierarchical chain at Ford lengthens the decision making process by 10 fold. They need to make Ford "flatter" in terms of corporate structure (a la BMW). And a restructure of that magnitude is not cheap, but hopefully it will pay off in the long run.

Bankruptcy will only occur if they cannot meet their debt obligations and I don't think they got a 5 year loan on the $18 bil.

Good thing none of you have ever tried to turn around a multi billion dollar cap corporation. I could see all of you now: "No just make a better design! we don't need to spend money, just draw better!" haha

I just hope that they get can keep it together and fix things...as much as I am all about free enterprise and survival of the fittest, something would definitely be missing from this country if Ford were to dissapear.
