Chinese Demand for Premium Marques Sky High

Chinese Demand for Premium Marques Sky High
The fastest growing automotive segment in China is the luxury market, where sales soared 24% in the first eight months of 2006. Asia Times reports that Jaguar sales in China were up 220% in 2005, while Land Rover is up 107%. China is the third largest consumer of Rollers, behind the U.S. and Britain. Recently at the Beijing Auto Show, Rolls Royce sold their Phantom display for $838,681. Volvo CEO Fredrik Arp has said that in five years, he expects China's luxury car sales will grow at an annual rate of 60% and Porsche hopes to almost double its 2005 Chinese sales.

Japanese automakers have taken notice as well. Lexus is already set up there, Honda began selling Acuras in September and Infinitis are expected in Chinese dealers next year.

Are the chinese surpose to be smart ? Why would they buy Land Rovers and Jaguar is beyond me.

If the Chinese are so smart, why would they buy a Toyota...I mean Lexus?

Jaguar and Land Rover have prestige. The Chinese dig this whole prestige stuff. Image is everything over there and the European brands care a type of cache that the Asian wannabe luxury brands lack.

We can safely say that the Chinese would theoretically prefer a Jaguar over a Lexus anyday.

bcoz Hongkong used to be UK colony and UK cars has long history there , chinese ppl takes their preception from HK trend. Lexus has really short history in Asia , I wonder Acura , Infinti will have a chance unless they build it in China and avoid import taxes.

and chinese ppl who buys luxury car hires drivers and uses it as limo all the time, there goes the BMW 5 series L version....

WWII has a lot to do with it. When the Japanese invaded China they raped and killed the women in China for enjoyment.

And that's a major reason why the Chinese don't buy Japanese cars as much as the cars from the countries that liberated them.

During WWII, Japanese soldiers also would hand out candy to Chinese children that was laced with cyanide poison and the children would be dead shortly after eating the candy.

Japan also invaded Australia during WWII and people remember the pain and suffering.

Yet, the Japanese still look down on the Chinese as inferior, despite the fact that Japanese culture and writing is heavily based off of China.

Japanese people won't even open their homes to Chinese people, yet they expect them to buy their cars.

yes.

why are there so many Jewish people who buy german cars?

they are smart enuff to have learned from, but NOT LIVE in the past

asian peoples generally are like that too.

vietnamese should HATE THE GUTS of all americans. yet most consider the war as just water under the bridge, and welcome americans to their country.

and ironically, it is americans who tend to STILL have "issues" over that old war. (out of guilt maybe?)

How can you back up someone who has no clue as to what the Japanese did in World War II, huh? My wife is a Filipina and her older relatives can tell you all about the horrors of Japanese occupation. I am not going to get into this because we're going off-topic here, but stop supporting assholes like Jake just because they're Toyota fanboys like you.

are you an idiot? that japanese commited atrocious war crimes in WW2, raping, murdering and burning millions of chinese people.
i quote "R.J. Rummel, , a professor of political science at the University of Hawaii, states that between 1937 and 1945, the Japanese military "murdered near 3,000,000 to over 10,000,000 people, most probably almost 6,000,000 Chinese, Indonesians, Koreans, Filipinos, and Indochinese, among others"
i think it is disgusting that you are prepared to overlook one of the biggest mass murders in history simlpy because it was committed by the japanese. why would this be a lie? why would someone lie about human experiments by the japanese? why would you ignore it, and therefore choose to believe that the japanese are innocent? it is despicable that someone can say such an ignorant thing. thge japanese were the bad guys too, for christsakes. the chinese were their jews and slavs, manchuria was their lebensraum.
you don't deserve to be just banned, you deserve to die. i know that sounds harsh, but when someone chooses to overlook the murder and torture of over 10 million people just to defend his veiws about a car, something is seriously wrong. why don't you find out about the suffering caused by the japanese? the pain suffered by the chinese? you won't though, you choose to ignore it.

Bill-

does your Filipina wife know her country's history in the period 1898-1910?

what we did then, makes our actions in vietnam seem like a church picnic. we even anticipated Pol Pot, in building PYRAMIDS of human skulls and bones.

With the old people, the ones that have the buying power to buy cars, there is a sentiment of antijapanese. Plus the German Brands have been doing luxury cars longer and they represent prestige. That is the reason MB, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Bentley sell well in Asia. The comments about the japanese war crimes against the other asian countries is so true and one of the reasons why there is still some friction between Japan and other ethnicities, specially in the older generations.

To the Chinese (and the rest of Asia) the problem with Japan is that they have never "sincerely" apologized for (or even admit to) the atrocities they caused during WWII. Compare to Germany -- whose gov't and people have taken extraordinary measures in that respect. This is not to say that the Chinese don't buy Japanese cars -- they do, and plenty of them, but given a choice, many will buy something else. And to most Asians WWII was JAPAN -- they don't really have the hatred of Hitler and his cronies like those in the west (so they will buy German cars).

I am Chinese-American and I currently own both Japanese and Germany cars (and American too). Sure, the luxury car market is surely growing in China, but it is still tiny! If you've ever driven in Beijing and Shanghai, you would think twice about buying a really expensive car (worry about fenderbenders? sure, but also worry about kidnappings and robbery!) I believe the non-Chinese car companies that will win big in China will be the ones that build their cars there - Chrysler, VW/Audi, the Japanese etc... and adjust to local tastes and preferences.

"If the chinese are so mad that they won't buy Japanese makes, they should be more madder at their own govt..."

this is true.

governments and the military tend to brutalize their OWN citizens and soldiers, who go on to brutalize OTHER innocent victims abroad.

of course, during WWII, average chinese had little to NO control over their gov't, and the gov't itself was divided (chiang vs. mao) and ineffective in protecting the people against japanese invasion.

i have seen (film/tape) and read of japanese officers who started out as really quite decent people. but they were MADE into monsters by their superiors and "the system." AFTER the war, they were decent men once again, and remorseful about their wartime actions. chinese people have seen this, and forgiven some of these men.

"America dropped 2 atomic bombs on 2 major city killing half a million civilians. America killed at least 1 million vietnamese during the Vietnam war(many of them civilians) and sprayed agent orange that destroyed vast amount of land and caused tons of people with burns, birth defects and other mutations. America was never punish for using nuclear weapons and engaging in chemical warfare, two of the worst thing any nation on earth could be doing. Yet today the Japanese and Vietnamese are cool with america. Why can't the Chinese?"

there are MANY things in american history that almost make me ashamed to be an american. of course, i know i am not PERSONALLY responsible for our past atrocities. but knowledge of these make me more tolerant of ALL non-americans, and more understanding about anti-american feelings whereever they pop up.

generally, it the GOVERNMENT and people in positions of POWER, who are responsible for atrocities. not individuals (altho' some are personally responsible too).

about the Rape of Nanking. the commanding general wanted to keep the troops OUT of the city, once it surrendered.
but he was overruled by a superior, who was a borderline madman/psychopath. he specifically ordered "Let us teach our brothers (the Chinese!) a lesson!" this was supposedly retaliation and a "lesson" for JUST offering resistance earlier.

this "terror" tactic incidentally, was not uncommon in the past in asia, and in many wars generally.

it was even "commanded by God" in some of the books of the Bible. with TOTAL population "cleansing," not just rape.

"governments and the military tend to brutalize their OWN citizens and soldiers"

even with regard to Pearl Harbor, and expansion of japan's bi-lateral war with china to a PACIFIC-WIDE war, the REAL BLAME lies with churchill and washington.
they intentionally PROVOKED and baited the attack, to justify U.S. entry into the war in europe. earlier provocations, which led to german submarines sinking TWO u.s. destroyers in the atlantic, had FAILED to get congress to declare war.

provoking the japanese was plotted as a way for the u.s. to get into the Euro war "through the back door." a phrase actually used by fdr and winnie.

a u.s. intelligence officer, who COULD have prevented or at least blunted the pearl harbor attack, had this to say about the 2404 american lives lost there: "It was a cheap price to pay, for getting us in the war."
