Edmund's "Pocket Rocket" Comparison

Ask five different people what defines a sport compact car and you'll get five different answers. Look it up on Wikipedia, the everyman's encyclopedia known for its everyman definitions and you get this: "a high-performance version of a compact car...often compromising cargo space, seating, gas mileage, drivability and reliability."

Here's the three-word definition we like: small, sporting, inexpensive. And because these cars are frequently the only transportation their owners have, reality says we should add a fourth: practical.

This test is performed in that spirit. That is, find the best small, sporting, inexpensive and practical car sold in the U.S. today. We narrowed the field to six that we feel are genuine contenders: the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged, 2006 Honda Civic Si, 2007 Mazda Mazdaspeed 3, 2006 Mini Cooper S, 2006 Subaru WRX and 2006 Volkswagen GTI.

Too lazy to read it? Here are the results...

1. 2007 Mazdaspeed 3
- "The best performance, practicality, and style of any sport compact."
(0-60 = 5.9 Sec)
2. 2006 Subaru WRX TR
- "Any road speed, all-weather practicality and four doors."
(0-60 = 5.9 Sec)
3. 2006 Honda Civic Si
- "Precise and confident, but must be wrung out to be quick."
(0-60 = 7.5 Sec)
4. 2006 Mini Cooper S
- "The best and worst of small car handling and usability in one gorgeous package."
(0-60 = 7.4 Sec)
5. 2006 Volkswagen GTI
- "A strong daily driver that lacks the leader's performance."
(0-60 = 7.2 Sec)
6. 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged
- "Impressive performance hamstrung with subpar quality and practicality."
(0-60 = 7.1 Sec)

That Mazda is really an impressive little car.

Yes, kudos to Mazda. Funny, Car and Driver recently ranked the VW ahead of the Civic Si. C&D claim to put driving dynamics ahead of refinement. Yet, Edmunds ranks the Si ahead of the VW, and says that the Si is a better choice for twisty back roads.

GTI's have gone so far from their heritage that even hardcore VW fans are embittered. Why ? in the name of God* do they have to style it like a carolla and make it as fat as a 60's buick and expect us to call it sporty? Its only sporty when compared next to the Civic Si .. which is like dating a skinny soprano on speed aka the few moments of pleasure arent worth the pounding headache ...

Haaaa.VW GTI at a distant second last place only above the crappy cobalt.

BTW Subaru WRX for me too like utahkid.
second place should go to Honda Civic SI and third to Mazda Speed 3.

If you ask me, the Subaru WRX is in a different class. Also, I think the Golf R32 (or is it R36 now?) is the true competitor to the Japanese cars here.

The Mazda is a superb package though. Fast and affordable and fun.

Hmm. Between the Mazdaspeed 3 (boy racer), GTI (refined everday-er) and Si (a mix of both), I'd probably choose the Si.

I'll hold out for the next-gen WRX, thank you. If I had to replace my '02 right now, I would probably spring for another Subie because of the AWD.

I think I would have taken the Civic though..but great list of cars. Good to see the Cobalt in the mix.

I'm not sure what the rest of the U.S. calls it, but isn't a "pocket rocket" a tiny vibrator women get off with?

Corolla vs. WRX: are you kidding me?

The Corolla is the most DULL car out there.

Not sporty, not fun and not that economical.

The only thing it has is price and reliability. Grow up, Jake.
