Customers Want Coddling, Not Palatial Showrooms

Customers Want Coddling, Not Palatial Showrooms
Readers of the latest ADAC brand-satisfaction rankings may be surprised to find that the German automobile club puts Smart, DaimlerChrysler's cult city car brand, in last place.

It's not that customers are dissatisfied with the car itself, according to survey results. No, they are bothered by the way they get treated at the dealership.

That's no wonder. Smart customers bear the brunt of the brand's constantly changing sales strategy. They are nomads in a service desert, always looking for the next dealership.

The success of Lexus in the United States also is directly related to the level of service it provides to existing customers and prospective buyers alike. The brand has invested in building customer relationships instead of focusing on glass-and-marble showroom palaces, a decision that has paid off year after year in survey-topping satisfaction scores.

The rankings underscore that, more than ever, victory or defeat in the auto industry is determined at the dealership, not in the development center or factory.

Lexus and Jaguar recognize this. Mercedes and Smart are just learning it.

Yup, I'm related to all the Audi salesmen in the world, because I'm just like that.

You get quite annoying.

My salesman is fine- and I know him very well. I don't really get involved.

Something funny is that when we were about to buy my wife's RX330, my son corrected the salesman on a few specs on the car! They were arguing about the wheels in an RX in the showroom. The salesman said it had 18s- he insisted. My son said, "No, those are the 17s." He was about twelve years old. He kept saying they were the 17s, and finally looked at the tire. It clearly said "17" on it. The Lexus dealer was embarrassed!

I believe he got his RX330 before well before the Q7 came out, and the VW wasn't the logical choice.
The new MDX is ugly.

Yes.

We bought it back in April of '03. She had an RX300 before then.

Q7 is too big (and it wasn't out), Touareg is a VW, and she wouldn't consider going from a Lexus to a VW.

The new MDX is hideous- and she's getting an '07 A8 that we'll be custom-ordering in January. Cambridge Green over beige, with the beautiful light Birchwood trim.

Mercedes dealers are jerks, except for a few on the west coast. They constantly get low/mediocre ratings - this probably why Mercedes customer retention numbers are declining relative to competitors such as Lexus and BMW.

Don't even get me started on Audi dealers - lets just say Audi customers reward Audi dealers by buying from a competitor rather than from Audi next time around.
