Driven: The New Honda Legend

Now for those who don’t know what the Honda Legend is, its Honda’s, well really it’s just a high-end Accord (or the RL version of the Acura)for the people who want some styling and advanced technological features. The Honda Legend runs on a 3.5 liter V6 engine pushing 290 horsepower with 259 lb-ft torque, giving the car the ability to do 0-62 mph in 7.3 seconds. The transmission on the Honda Legend comes in a 5-speed automatic rear wheel drive with paddleshifting, not to mention the “Super-Handling” Honda is bragging about. Now who’s going to by this £39,000 Honda over a BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and Volvo S80?

Well true Japanese car fans who really can’t stand Lexus or Acura’s for that matter. Or those looking for reliable and affordable gadgets and gizmos in a car. The Honda Legend is the first Honda to get night vision driving which will help spot out citizens, animals and other cars. The Legend is also equipped with Honda’s LKAS lane guidance system that scans the road markings and steers the car for you. Now that’s the type of technology that BMW, Audi or Volvo’s have not pioneered as of yet.

But still who will buy the Honda Legend over a BMW, Audi, Acura or Volvo? Even Honda is admitting that it only expects to sell 400 units annually. Nonetheless, we think the Honda Legend is worthy of appreciation.

Okay maybe Im confused, but thats clear an Acura RL. Is the RL now going to the Honda lineup under the Legend name?

I was unsure if this was just a JDM Honda Legend, because in Japan I though it was always sold as the Honda Legend, which is the Acura RL in the US.

Or is this Honda's rival for the Toyota Avalon???

uh no the rl has always been sold as the Honda Legend in other markets......honda and toyota have always sold lexus and acura in home markets, but i really dont get this car, its big heavy, overpriced "priced more than the competition, higher than an e class or 5 series which already the most expensive thats crazy....the interior design is cool but alot of the materials inside are low rent.....honda get a v8, rear wheel drive, and styling that doesnt look like a stretched honda accord and maybe this thing will sell

Toyota does not rebadge any of the L-finess models,so don't say always,Lexus is the only japanese brand that is branching off from it's mother company Toyota,unlike Infiniti or Acura!!!
(L-Finess models only include ES,GS,IS,and LS for now,but I'm sure they will apply the L-Finess lines to the next RX,GX,SC,and LX)

Not really.

1. The Phaeton, which you're reffering to, is only badged as a Volkswagen, while this pulls off being badged both as a Honda and its "luxury" variant, Acura.

2. The Phaeton's interior is second to one- the A8. The only reason the A8's is better is because it's more simple and un-cluttered. Without its mess of buttons, I'd say the Phaeton and A8 interiors would be close to equal. The badge doesn't make the car.

Starting in 2008 Acura will be a seperate entity in the Japanese market. This is when they will launch the 2008 NSX to celebrate Acura as a world product and not just a US product. Keep in mind, Honda is received differently in the Asian markets. There, they are thought of as a premier engineering company so to call an Acura RL a Honda Legend, there, is not deminishing the car, in the Asian market but because of the link to the US market, it tends to do that in the US. This is why they are seperating Honda and Acura 2008.

When I saw this design 3+ years ago I couldn't believe Honda/Acura was scraping a unique chassis on the 1996-2004 Legend/RL for a stretched Accord chassis on the 2005-present. Huge mistake. Small back seat, no trunk space, and a very stubby kind of look. Its a shame to because it has the most powerful V6 in its class, the handling is extraordinary because of the SH-AWD, and some of the technical capabilities are unique only to the RL.

Not a huge power advantage for Acura any more.

The new CL is beautiful. BMW530i/CL550 (who hasn't posted here in a while), don't mind them. He's probably too busy driving his new car.
