Jeremy Clarkson can't defend this Land Rover?

The people who buy such cars are "enthusiasts". They love the Land Rover no matter what: be it price, state of technology etc.

You could argue that the people buying MINI's and VW Beetle's are "idiots". The original MINI and VW Beetle were true economy cars. The current versions are not as fuel efficient, more expensive and generally classified as "fun cars". The people who buy these cars love the name, the cult status and "ignore the price": literally. Hence BMW and VW charge a lot for these respective cars.

Same deal with the Land Rover. Fact is, it is still one of the most capable offroad vehicles there is - putting to shame many newer models.

i would have to agree, there is obviously a market for this car or they wouldnt still be making them, the fact i think they are archaic, pointless, and ugly side im not going to knock someone for spending their own hard earned money on something they really like....so as long as people want one why not keep making money off of them

And the G-Class used to be just like the Defender, too. But then they "softened" it for suburban use, à la Range Rover.

Still cool, but cramped inside and way over-priced for what they are.

Perhaps Land Rover need to learn a lesson from (deep breath...) Jeep. Jeep has managed to re-create the Wrangler countless times, without losing any 'Jeep-ness'.

It's still a bit basic, still a bit crude, but it is unmistakingly a Jeep and because the 2007 Wrangler is all-new, benefits from better safety and road manners, while interior space and packaging is at a 21st Century level.

Thing is, the 2007 Defender is a bit of an oxymoron. It is still basic and dated, yet comes with a LR3-style dashboard with all the trimmings. Surely no farmer wants it to be nice inside?

That defeats the whole purpose of buying one over a Discovery....

I think the defender has a huge cult following. But sooner or later it has to be redesigned from the inside out, but careful not to turn off current owners and at the same time they can probably get into new markets. For one the ergonomics and comfort has to be improved. Only then will the 20,000 price be justified. Its a very tricky situation but if its not done now, when? They cant wait until its obsolete and nobody wants to buy it anymore. By then it would be maybe too late to revive it.

Mr Jeremy should buy Austin Marina, gives him a more space for less quits - otherwise his comments are full of hot air - perhaps he is paid by Ford to prove to Land Rover, that indeed Defenders are for elephant hunters and there is not much of those in USA -therefore can't be imported; I 've tested 110 def. in Iceland for military and had no problem at all with power neither interior space; we got stuck in deep snow between 2 glaciers, bcs. no diff locks and piza cutters' tires installed, but with the same Def. recovered U.S. tourists stuck elsewhere in Icelandic snow, in their rental Nisan; in addition was evaluating here (Calif.) Def. 110 assembled in Brazil w. Brazilian Iochpe (now International) bit obsolete diesel; again on our test off road route I've managed pass areas where Jeeps failed;
Defenders are the greatest for their purpose, alas in L.A. trafic I've never stayed behind - interior? I'm 6'3", 210Lbs of solid muscle and had no problem fitting in - well I wear 6pack, perhaps Mr. Jeremy wears an oversized keg, which may not fit under the steering wheel;
