MINI Cooper with Manual Transmission Tops 40 Miles per Gallon

In light of increasing fuel prices, many manufacturers are striving to produce vehicles with an average fuel economy of 30 miles per gallon. The fact that the all-new 2007 MINI Cooper achieves 40 miles per gallon according to the latest EPA testing should be welcomed by car buyers across the US. And that the MINI Cooper delivers this miserly fuel economy with no effect on its performance and driving capabilities is an added advantage.

For all its advertising about fuel economy, the 1st gen Mini did not achieve impressive fuel ratings for its size. (The S-model was in the low-mid 20's combined, lower than the Ford Escape Hybrid!) This is quite a leap--if the claim is true.

True, the first generation had some very old tech engines. A modified version of the Dodge Neon engine. The new engines are finally modern engines. The fuel economy is especially nice on the Turbo.

Who needs a hybrid? If a car like the MINI Cooper can get such mileage, maybe we should all drive a MINI.

I have a Cooper S, and it consistently gets in the low 20's. For a subcompact, that is lousy. Thankfully, MINI has moved into the 21st century with its new engines.

Bill, hybrids still have their place. A Prius hybrid gets in the mid 40's, and is a mid sized vehicle. You simply can't expect mileage in the 40s and higher, plus clean emissions from any source right now other than a hybrid, unless you are driving subcompacts. When the future MINI hybrids come out they will have spectacular mileage as they will be powering a subcompact. They should easily get mileage in the 50s and 60s.
