Audi R8 Nurburgring information leaked

With the Art Basel festival taking place in Miami, Audi executives were at the event to give information on the R8.

Some of the points they made were:

1. The R8 with 420 horsepower has beaten cars with 500 horsepower around the Nordschleife due to the new suspension being more compliant than traditional setups. Audi didn't mention which cars they didn't beat around the Ring.

2. The next engine has been confirmed as a V10 with 500 horsepower. This will be out in Summer of 2008

3. The current car will debut in the U.S.
in August and September of 2007 with only 200 cars, all of which are sold out.

4. In Europe the R8 is sold out for the next 2-3 years

I looked over the review in CAR magazine. Basically states that Porsche will defintely have a fight on its hands with this one. I know people are going to say no way. I'm just telling you what it said. From the enthusiasm of the writer, I'ld have to believe the R8 is something very special, indeed.

Only 200 for North America? Bummer...

it will only have 200 in year one but the year is only 4 months but in 2008 (2008/2009) year we will have 1,000

Only a few dealers will sell them because it will cost 100,000 to qualify to sell them. So dealers that can only sell one or 2 will not play.

The R8 will be an extremely low production car.

Not many people will have one, or even see one.

200 for North America is not as bad as waiting 2 1/2 years for one of these in Europe.

me again... question to you Nut... WHERE did u get the info from re how many cars will be delivered to europe and the sell out for the next 2 1/2 years? real sources or just some realistic selfcreated assumption? dont get me wrong, dont want to discredit your comments at all.. just curious on where u got this info... I'm waiting for mine already.. I heard we get 100 cars next year in CH.. and hopefully one of the first will be mine then... anyway as I already mentioned in my previous comment.. keep up the good work and feed us with more of these articles ;O))) lechz

That 200 figure sucks and basically gives the dealers a permission slip for some silly markups.

Just have to wait a while I guess.

# 1 is good. (M6 and Dodge Viper are most likely the 500 hp cars that the Audi R8 is quicker than, others probably as well.
# 2 is good. V10 version in the future.
# 3 Not good. But the 200 units are for 4 months only. So for 2007 600 or more should be sold. Audi will make only 15 per day.
# 4. Good that the R8 is sold out, but Audi should look into upping the production nubmers.

Well it maybe faster than some cars round the 'ring... but in truth it doesn't matter if it's any good or not as they've already sold them all to people who haven't even driven one. It could be crap and it wouldn't even be Audi's problem.

200 units eh? wow.. that'll really up the ante in the war of the sales figures. And they're not charging enough for it.. If you're going to sell very small production runs of completely new models, you need to charge a premium for it.

I've said this before, but Audi really need to start selling more of their volume models... the A3 estate for instance, I think I've only ever seen one! Exclusive? or just unpopular?

Audi already is looking at "$110-115K" for a nicely-equipped R8. This is without the markup.

With the crazy markup that will most definitely happen we could easily see these V8 R8s selling for over $125K.

It seems that the V10 will creep into the $140,000 range by the looks of these prices and markups for the V8.

If the R8 will sell at $125K due to a premium, wouldn't it be easier to get the new 997 GT3? Only about $105K and maybe more plentiful than the R8?

Yes, but the GT3 is not a daily driver. I does not offer the comfort and luxury of the R8. The GT3 is a raw track inspired race car, good for weekend fun, but not really meant for wet surfaces and daily driving. The R8, on the other hand, will fulfill the needs of those craving luxury coupled with outstanding performance and daily drivability. Also, by the looks of it, with production numbers only around 1,000/yr, there will be less R8's on the road than Carrera GT3's or Carrera S's, making them more valuable in terms of residual value and, hence, making them more popular to those with money who can't stand "wasting" it on indulgent vehicles.

The closer competitor here, I think, is the Carrera 4S, which would ring up under $125K, as long as you didn't go crazy with Porsche's ridiculously long and over-priced option list. In fact, you could get a nicely optioned Carrera 4S with the Carrera Power Kit (boosting hp to 381) for at or under $115K...which would provide you with the performance and the comfort necessary to compete with the R8.

OK, I did say the GT3 probably will be built in greater numbers than the R8, so the R8 is more rare, now why did I get beboosted? Just because I much rather buy the GT3? Plus I prefer my sports cars purely sports. Heck even my two MB E class come equipped with the sports packages.

In regards to residual value, you may be correct, but one thing I have noticed in my country is that, trying to sell a used premium car is not as easy as in other countries. For one, not many people buy them, Plus all the people who can afford them usually buy a new one.

My last cars, I had to sell to some of my friends, and that actually meant I probably got below blue book, if there actually exist one in my country.

They do.Audi is charging atleast USD 40-45K over the RS4,when in real they r the same thing.

On other note,
"2.The next engine has been confirmed as a V10 with 500 horsepower. This will be out in Summer of 2008"

This means that new RS6 will also be getting the 500BHP.
What about the rumours of 550BHP and even some Audi guys cliamed 600BHP.

And as Audi says, the V10 producing 500BHP will be out in summer of 2008,it means The R8 V10 and RS6 are very far from now.

Why r they taking so long?

The RS6 is getting the turbocharger version of that engine for 580 hp.

MDalle, I don't see why the 500 horsepower engine in the R8 won't be sufficient. If the 420 horsepower V8 can run very low 4's or even a flat 4 to 60 mph, the V10 will run mid to high 3's to 60 mph.

Those numbers are in line with such exotics as the Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo, Ford GT, Corvette Z06 and Porsche 911 Turbo.

We have no clue what engine the RS6 will use for sure. I have heard many sources say that the RS6 will not share its engine or horsepower numbers with the R8 V10.

There is no markup allowed by AoA on any of their models.
If caught, the dealer will get its allocation for one month taken away..

I still remember seeing an Audi TT at a Vegas dealership when they first came out. The dealer had handwritten an extra eight grand to the sticker price.

The RS6 will have a twin-turbocharged version of the R8's V10, for anyone questioning that.

I doubt the R8 will "only" have 500hp. It would make sense that it would have closer to 520-550 range. Again, just speculation- but they need to distance it from the V8 version. Look at the S8 vs. W12. They have the same power (granted, the two R8s won't, but they'd have similar power if the V10 had 500hp), and who's going to buy a W12 over an S8 for anything other than prestige and a little extra luxury, in the S8's already beautiful interior? So, they need to project them as different models for different buyers.

Personally, I think it makes even more sense to twin-turbocharge the 420hp FSI V8. I've read that it can make as much as the twin-turbo V10 might, if not more. It saves space, weight, and they don't need to waste money on a Lamborghini engine in every RS6 that goes off the assembly line- but it's cool to have those bragging rights.

chewychewy - 12/11/2006 11:51:12 PM

You are correct. Audi won't put a turbocharged V10 into the R8 as that would make the Gallardo obsolete. But, if the R8 with 420 hp beats 500+ hp cars, the V10 with 500 or so hp should be something specail indeed. The RS6 will get a biturbo version of the V10. As 500 hp won't cut it for the RS6. A 580 hp biturbo V10 FSI for the RS6 would cream the competiton, exactly what the RS6 is inteded to do.

"When did you hear that?! Right up until this moment you've been claiming that they would use the same engine! Then it turns out that the R8 V10 will have 500 bhp (which i think will be more than enough, i didn't claim that it wasn't sufficient) and suddenly you've heard that they won't use the same engine. "

Mdalle.U said it perfectly.Agree with u 1000%.

This is the story of every bias Audi fan.

USE Logic. The R8 will be using the current Lamborghini Gallardo's V10 producing 500BHP.It's so clear and simple to understand.
And Gallrdo will then be upgraded to around 600BHP.

There will be a considerable difference between the two cars for sure.R8 and Gallardo.
And even their brands.Audi and Lamborghini.

RS6 most probably will be getting a 5.2l V10 producuing 520BHP.So that the it gives 100BHP per litre,it will be around 200pounds lighter than S6.

and there u have a new RS6.

No, the R8 will get the Audi V10 5.2 (based on the Lambo engine/ Lambo engine based on Audi/VW arhitecture) with 500 hp. The RS6 should get a turbo version of that engine according to sources. The Turbo engine in the R8 like I said would make the Gallardo useless.

NOW YOU'RE USING SPECULATION.

STOP.

Again, we have NO CLUE. If Audi wants to beat the M5, they need more than 520- it's a heavier car, by at least 200 or 300lbs. This is also speculation, but I'd bet a lot that it's going to have at least, AT LEAST, 550hp.
