Lincoln to Debut RWD Sedan in Detroit

At next month's North American International Auto Show, BusinessWeek.com has learned that Ford Motor (F) will show a rear-drive Lincoln concept car. It will be based on the same rear-drive chassis and engineering architecture it is planning for a future design of Ford Australia's popular Falcon model.

Ford has made it clear that it wants to try to revive Lincoln. At the center of debate about the struggling brand's future is whether to bring out a rear-drive design, which luxury car buyers tend to love, or concentrate instead on front-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles. So far, the front-drive crowd has been winning the arguments at Ford.

So let me get this straight. Ford wants to revive Lincoln, I'm assuming to do battle with Mercedes, BMW, and Lexus. But they don't know whether to go with FWD or RWD. One idiot says go with FWD because it's cheaper to produce. How stupid can they be? Ford always tries to go the cheap route. No wonder they're going in the toilet.

The direction that Ford wants to go with Lincoln seems to change every month. First the cars will have names (ie Zephyr), then it is alpha-numeric(MKZ). Rwd to fwd to awd and now back to rwd? How about setting a course and trying to perfect it? The LS sedan didn't seem too far off, with a little fine grooming and perhaps a trade mark "Lincoln" style theme, they could have made something out of it.

Yes, it is pronouned M-K-Z, not Mark Z. They dropped the "Mark" when they heard nobody was saying it.

Lincoln is struggling to find their identity. They want to be Cadillac, but they haven't come close by looking at recent products. Look at the new Navigator. One magazine said almost my exact words- and they said that it went from "subtle" to "What happened to the front end?!" Whereas the Escalade has a great look, and commands massive presence on the road.

I don't really care about Lincoln, though. The Cadillac name is far more valuable, to me at least.

Lincoln is a great brand with bad planners and managers. If a Lexus can do it in the 80s from scratch, I believe so can Lincoln. Shane is right with the modern Continental. Lincoln, look into your past models for inspiration. The LS is almost there but needs to be more current and elegant. Maybe hire Italians to design your cars to get out of the "your father's car" image.
