Its the VW "A2 without Leather & wood". Audi has sold a special A2 model (I think its called the "4-liter" car because its rated at only 4 liters fuel consumption per 100km, or about 80 MPG, giving it excemptions for both sales tax and licensing fees in Germany) for years now.
Compared to the base A2, the 4-liter has a lot more aluminum in the suspension and body parts to reduce weight.

Yes, it looks better than the Prius, but I don't know if my 6'5" bod would fit inside. However, knowing VW, its probably spacious (in a special, "micro-car" sort of way ;)

VW has been building better fuel economy cars alot longer than Toyota. Also, I agree with GTR35. I love Toyota trucks.

Now VW needs to work more on reliability and they should be set.

It's a shame that VW doesn't have a car like this for the US market. Great economy and I'm sure better than a Prius.

Seriously, if you're comparing a car the size of a grain of salt to a Prius you might as well throw in that it beats a Suburban in MPG and emissions as well.

There are dozens of cars that get better mileage than the Prius, countless mroe that accelerate faster, are roomier, or are more luxurious. These constant comparisons only show how amazing the Prius is. Because the Prius combines style, roominess, amenities, speed, mileage, and clean emissions, all at a reasonable price. NOBODY else offers a package that complete.

The Prius isn't stylish

And it certainly isn't cheap.

No, its purpose is to offer no compromises. A mid sized family sedan that offers reasonable performance, great fuel ecomonomy and great emissions. And it looks great, I dont care what any haters say. The Polo cannot be compared to it, because it is 2 classes smaller. $ people would be cramped. The Prius seats 5, with cargo. All at about 25K in US.

1970toyotamarc, what are you talking about? The Prius is the definition of compromises. It's a hybrid (tradeoff), the dashboard is in the center (compromise), the engine is crappy (compromise), it's small (compromise), it's ugly (compromise), it handles like crap (steering and braking), and really not last and certainly not least, it's a Toyota (too big of a compromise).

I would certainly pay 1/3 more because the Prius:

1. Has more room, I like to have space to put things and still bring some friends along
2. Has way more features and is more luxurious.
3. ABS and VSC
4. Is more reliable

Who cares, both can sit one person comfortably. That is how people commute. Both can sit 2 comfortably. Rarely do people actually use the back seat to get to work.

Go ahead and bike 10-30 miles that people commute. Great excercise. Just saying that the Polo BlueMotion would be perfect for commuters.

There is nothing that compares to the no compromise vehicle Prius right now except Toyota's own Camry hybrid. (The Attima will compare when it comes out, since it's virtually a Camry hybrid)

The Prius is not the sexiest car on the roadways to be sure.

But for those saying this thing looks far better, now might be an appropriate time to remove your head from your anal area.

I have to laugh about the Toyota benefits with safety features like ABS mentioned.
This has not been an option on a VW for years, as these safety features are standard on ALL VWs sold in the US, along with 4-wheel disc brakes (even on the vans) and have been for years.
However, for Toyota, ABS is an option, and 4-wheel discs aren't even available for some models.
A lowly Chevy Cavalier has better brakes than any Camry.

And what about that Matrix, with the brakes that have to be replaced in 1 year?
The dealers say this is normal, but they don't want their customers to talk to owners of other car makes.
I drive a Mexican built VW with 210,000 kms (130,000 miles) with the original clutch, exhaust, and I just replaced the original brake pads a few months ago. (2nd battery, 4 sets of tires)
Suspension is tight as new. And if you compare a '98 Beetle to a '98 Camry, I have a higher safety rating for side impacts (getting T-boned by an SUV is your worst scenario in city traffic).

The Prius is a good car (although not necessarily environmentally friendly when you consider manufacturing and disposal), but don't ever get into a safety argument against any kind of European car. They invented almost every safety feature (except laminated glass: GM) on modern cars.

One anecdotal experience with a car does not match up against a proper statistical analysis with thousands of cars. On average, Toyotas are more reliable than VWs. Please do not try and argue this as you will not be taken seriously if you do. VW consistenly finished near the bottom regarding long term reliability.

By the way, Europeans do not have the Monolpoly on Safety.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I've had my Matrix for three and a half years with no brake job.

Wow, for the money of a Prius here in the Netherlands you can buy a VW Golf TDI with 140HP and 320 NM of torque.
And you can still get 60 MPG.

And with a 0-60 time of 9 seconds and a top speed of 130 MPH it's certainly allot faster.

And pollute the environment with you diesel.

Very few people actually car pool. The Jetta used a 100 hp/177 lb-ft torque version. The new one will have 140 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque, and the engine has made up to 170. That version would whoop up on the Prius silly. And the current EPA test does have simulated stop and go without the actual stop and go, so the Prius runs on battery power that is unlikely in the real world. We will see how the common rail Jetta is rated when it comes out, for one thing it will definately have more performance than the Prius.
