UAW on the Run, Considers Merger to Stay Alive

The United Auto Workers has not ruled out merging with another union, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said Thursday.

The comment came during a question-and-answer session Gettelfinger hosted on the union's Web site, UAW.org.

"The UAW has not ruled out merging with other unions," he wrote in response to a question from a union member.

UAW membership fell to 557,000 in 2005 down from 1.5 million 20 years ago. With General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. offering buyouts to more than 70,000 workers, UAW membership is expected to continue to decline.

ApexAlex, good news! Unions like Affirmative Actions was created because of discrimination, but that doesn't exist anylonger and there is no need for either. In fact, California voted out affirmative action a long time ago and no problems since.

Not many industries left in the US that a union hasn't destroyed. Coal Mining, tire and rubber manufacturing, textiles, teachers and those are just the ones that have affected my life. Jimmy Hoffa where are you?

Wrong, Americans are not lazy.

Unions are a political tool.

Before WWII, America was run by the Democrats and they loathed the military and thought it was a waste of money, but that changed and the Dems had no choice and there's my proof, Americans are not lazy.

As for todays Unions, I have no use for them.

All Americans include people from every country, culture and demographic in the world. Thus if you call Americans lazy you are actually calling all people on planet Earth lazy. True, unions are not needed now. We have lawyers and the legal system that screw both businesses and people. Cuts out the middle man.

when i was a kid, we hated unions, 'cuz strikes were inconvenient for a lot of people.

as i matured and got EDUCATED, i saw that unions WERE NECESSARY, to counter the overwhelming advantages big business had over labor. when certain unions (e.g. UAW) got TOO powerful, then abuses occurred and ordinary people could rightfully hate unions again.

TODAY, maybe we have come full circle. a case COULD be made for unions, to counter multinational corporations (e.g. WalMart) once again abusing their powers as they have again gained overwhelming economic might and influence.
