Porsche Cayman vs Audi TT Quattro

"Sports coupes are our dream cars. We will likely lust after a sports sedan for its blend of practicality and performance, but what we really love is the sexy seriousness of a no-frills 2-door — a car whose shape is formed for beauty and speed, not practicality. Spry fender-flared, arched-roof coupes have always been the icon for youth and the mid-life crises. For good reason, as these are the cars that will never be a practical choice, only an emotional one.
In the world of sports cars, few names are as revered as Porsche. Not just as the builder of fast, sleek coupes, but of expensive ones; the least expensive model being the Boxster. A convertible that we've always found to be a superb choice — for a convertible. Typically the Boxster has been discounted as a serious performer because of its open top. Enthusiasts have long wished it had a fixed-roof counterpart, so that it could be taken seriously as a performance car. Porsche has obliged with the sublime Cayman S and now with the Cayman, the least-expensive Porsche with a fixed roof. In contrast, Audi already has a coupe and convertible of the artfully styled TT. But it was never a Porsche competitor. Its well-rounded looks translated into well-rounded performance, as might be expected of a platform designed for front-wheel drive and featuring a nearly 60/40 weight split. Audi has worked to this and brought forth a TT with near 58/42 weight distribution and featuring full-time Quattro all-wheel drive. Combined with a new style that squares off some of those round contours, the 2008 TT has emerged as a sharper tool."

I'd prefer the CAYMAN. I love how it looks like!

TT is the winner.

The TT got to 60 in 5.1 seconds, the Cayman required 5.3 seconds. The TT was also quicker down the 1/4 mile IIRC.

Cayman is just a cockster ~
If you watch TOp gear u know what i mean....

Meanwhile TT has improved a lot and I really like the new look.

This is a hard choice, but I would take the Cayman.

Hmm.

I'd probably take the TT.

If I wanted a Cayman, I'd get a Cayman S. If I wanted a Cayman S, I'd get a 911. Which ruins the purpose of the car entirely- leading me to my choice with the TT.

Cayman, hands down. Audi is too heavy. If weight doesn't matter to you then you should pick the Audi--because you'll never get what sports cars are about in the first place.

Have you driven it?

I don't think so.

The TT 2.0T DSG is a better car than the TT 3.2 DSG- it's the same story with A3 2.0T vs. 3.2 and A4 2.0T vs. 3.2. The V6 versions are just unnecessary and irrelevant. 2.0T is powerful, much lighter and sprightly in comparison.

that is not what C&D said

one liked the TT better one liked the Caymen better but had good things to say about the TT

Both the 2.0 T and 3.2 will be very light vehicles. It might be heavier than the Cayaman, but it still destroyed it on the track and just about everywhere else. The V6 will be at least half a second quicker than the 2.0 T. Still the TT wins out as a better overall package.

"Chewy" your full of sh*t saying the TT destroyed the Cayman on the track! The Cayman ran through the slalom nearly 5 clicks faster than the TT...Truth is the TT still isn't a performer to be reconed with by anymeans.

Now don't get me wrong I'm by no means slamming Audi (Lately they've been on top of their game no doubt)...I just call it how I see it, & what I don't see is the TT dynamically outperforming the Cayman...Capeshe?!

yes the TT has improved, but I still would prefer the cayman. O-60 is just 1 factor that TT has over the cayman which is not even a big difference!

Well of course there is the price issue taken into account. If price is not the object you have to go for the Cayman. It is simply the more pure sportscar period. The TT though is greatly improved from the original. It is now a genuine sporting coupe. Also with its AWD its more of a practical car for all seasons than the Cayman. Then you through in the price differential and then add typical options and the Cayman's cost streches out a large gap over the Audi. So it really gets down to what one needs. If price is in any way an issue you have to go for the Audi.

RupertRupert - 12/17/2006 4:33:46 PM

thing is, if you don't care about price, you get a 911.

If you want a sports car and consider price then get the TT, I know I would. If you want to drive a porsche. Why settle for the Cayman, I much rather save more money then get the 997.

give me the turbo 4 thats in the S3 and stick it in the TT and its a deal. Actually even with the base 200 hp ill still take it over the Cayman because 1. i see Caymans everywhere and 2. the TT is like $20,000 cheaper.

"At the Hockenheimring, we probed the performance limits of both cars, but they were not what we expected. Having nearly equal power yet carrying an extra 250 lb., the TT seemed to be at a disadvantage. But combined with awd, an extra half-liter of engine displacement, an S tronic dual-clutch 6-speed transmission and wider tires, the TT gets down the road quicker and easier than the Cayman. Try as it might, the Cayman can't keep up. That's saying a lot, as the Cayman is an excellent car to drive, with a quick-shifting 6-speed and an engine that pulls willingly. It just can't keep up with the slick-shifting, clutchless manual or the extra torque from Audi's narrow-angle, 15-degree, 3.2-liter V-6. The V-6 makes torque low, and pulls hard all the way to redline, while the Cayman's flat-6 needs to be kept revving high."

The TT is quicker on the track.

I read in Road and track that the TT was faster in Accelation than the Cayman, but for the twisties and in the handling department, the Cayman was better.

"Around the track the Cayman is a superb car; the TT only a capable one. Where the Cayman responds instantly, the TT is hesitant and when it does respond to driver inputs, it results in a state of understeer."

Just optioned up the Cayman on the Porsche website. Without even going crazy with the options, only to get the stuff that a 50,000 car should have, you end up in the 64k range. You will be able to get the TT-RS for this kind of money.

It's just too funny to listen to such a silly argument.

chewy - relax, picking winners here is pointless. it's just a silly article written by a guy who had a ride in two of the finest cars on the planet. Who cares which one was better in his opinion? Your opinion is the only one that should matter to you, and other people are entitled to theirs. Arguing for the sake of arguing is wasting your time.

If i can throw my 2 cents in: the Cayman is a better handling car, period. The TT is a bigger and more luxurious car. Because the TT has a front engine, it is not as well balanced as the Cayman, and it suffers from understeer. On non-ideal pavement, the Audi makes up for this with a phenomenal AWD system. If you want to add more power, well, both cars can be tuned up to ludicrous capabilities. As it is, you can't go wrong with either one.

So there you go - which is better, Grand Marnier or Cointreau?
