001's new GS450 Hybrid deflating ego's of E-Class and 5-Series owners?

001's new GS450 Hybrid deflating ego's of E-Class and 5-Series owners?
The core philosophy at AutoSpies.com from day one has been to tell our audience our true opinions about the manufacturers and their products, no matter how bad or how good.

Because of that attitude we suffered in the beginning trying to get what we needed from them because they knew they could not control us, like they do with the other traditional media outlets.

And TRUST us, they DO.

But because of AutoSpies.com hyper traffic growth and influence over the last year, plus the decline of printed media impact and readership, things are really changing with our relationships with the auto manufacturers and in the business in general.

In other words, your support has been ENORMOUS and we’re appreciative because we know we could not have done this without YOU! Thank you!

A week does not go by anymore when some PR person is calling us asking if we would like a short or long term review car from their stable or to attend a press launch of a car.

That’s good for us and it’s good for you because you can be assured it will help us do an even better job of giving you the inside scoop in the future.

We’re now in the position to CHOOSE the cars we want and pass on the ones we don’t.

So when I decided to make my choice for my daily driver (mid-size premium sedan) I decided to call our contacts at Lexus and request a long term loaner of the new GS450h.

Why did I choose the GS450h over cars like the 5-series, E-class, M-Series or others?

A number of reasons which I will list here for you:

1. It’s the best looking design…sexy, decadent, athletic, modern, youthful and elegant all rolled into one. The 5-series design has never worked for me and the E-Class is very nice (my second choice design-wise) but too taxi-ish looking for my taste and the interior looks too Chrysler-like.

2. The GS450h is so $#%@#$ fast you just can’t believe it! 0-60 is amazing but 30-80 is as good as my old M5. The best description of the feeling is like a silent Carrera S with less drama. An S500 tried to pass me this morning and when I looked in my rear view mirror two seconds later, not only was the guy looking outside his door to see if he was standing still, I could just see in his facial expression that his ego has been crushed and deflated for life. I think he’s still driving around San Diego in a fog wondering what happened.

3. The car looks more expensive than the E and 5. ESPECIALLY on the inside.

4. If I was driving a 550 and I was driving it hard, I would be getting around 14-15MPG. I’m absolutely KILLING this thing (Lexus, you did not hear this) with hard starts, full throttle passes, etc. and I’m still getting 24MPG!!!! If I baby it, I can get 29MPG! With NO compromises. It doesn’t look like a hybrid and it is as fast or faster than the regular gasoline competitors.

5. But living in California, the biggest bonus is being able to blow by everyone in the car pool lane LEGALLY because it’s a hybrid! Trust me, you don’t know how under-rated that feature is!

6. The electronics (Bluetooth, etc.) and sound system blow everything else out of the water.

7. The Lexus dealership experience (I get to enjoy the brand new Newport Lexus facility…more on that in another article soon).

8. I’m doing the right thing for the environment with NO sacrifice on my end.

So there you have it.

But how will it run long term?

I will be driving it as my daily driver, so I will be reporting back to you if I run into any service issues during the next few months.

Things are changing my friends…For the good for me an you.

It’s a great time be a car lover!

Sorry Agent001,

I disagree with you in many points.

1. It’s the best looking design…sexy, decadent, athletic, modern, youthful and elegant all rolled into one. The 5-series design has never worked for me and the E-Class is very nice (my second choice design-wise) but too taxi-ish looking for my taste and the interior looks too Chrysler-like.

Design is subjective. How does the E Class look "taxi-ish"? Sounds like BS to me. Also, comparing the E Class interior to a Chrysler is stupid. The E Class interior, especially now with the refresh, is a high quality interior that blows anything from Chrysler out of the water. Are you perhaps, BIASED now?

3. The car looks more expensive than the E and 5. ESPECIALLY on the inside.

You're insulting the 5er and E Class with your comments about them looking cheap on the outside and inside. Ok, maybe the BMW doesn't have the best interior, but both the BMW and Benz look pretty "premium" on the outside. Also, I've been in both the GS and E Class sedans lately and if you ask me, both interiors are on par with each other in terms of quality. They both look and feel expensive. The Audi A6 cockpit owns them both.

Also, this:

8. I’m doing the right thing for the environment with NO sacrifice on my end.

Creating a hybrid car still damages the environment. The machines that create the materials used to build this engine consume energy and release pollution (as with standard cars as well). Also, what do you think happens to your batteries once your hybrid becomes old? NASA doesn't send them into space, just so you know.

And why did you ban BMW530i / CL550? Most people here liked him and his posts, including me. Sure, he lost his temper easily but he was usually objective with most topics and I caught his sarcasm instantly (and many people didn't). Did you ban him because he drives a nicer car than you? I'm just teasing if you don't catch it.

I did not say the 5 loks like a taxi...I said the E looks 'Taxi-ish'. What that means is to conservative and plain vs. the sexiness of the GS or for that matter the CLS. The next E-Class has to have more CLS in it in my opinion. Look a the HVAC control on the E and tell me it does not have dodge intrepid written all over it. That doesn't mean i don't LIKE the E, I do. I just choose the GS over the E because looks are important to me. Sexy and seductive gets me everytime.

Please explain to me how the E Class looks plain compared to the GS? The GS looks like a carbon copy of the E Class in many regards.

Originally, I liked the style of the Lexus GS. But lately, the more I saw of it, the less I liked it. I personally don't find it an exciting or sexy design. The design of the mirrors for instance annoys me for some reason. The E Class is conservative, I agree, but it has a type of European elegance the GS lacks. Both cars looks dynamic to me in their own way.

And why did you ban BMW530i? Especially when posted under his new name of CL550. He took time to respond to people's questions and you deleted his posts and booted him off again. Nicely done.

Sarcasm intended...

I disagree on many points, also.

It's nice, but the interior only matches the E-Class and isn't up to par with the A6. To say the E-Class's interior looks cheap is laughable- it looked pretty substantial in the E350 4Matic we drove, even after driving an A8 the night before. Obviously she wasn't as impressed with the E-Class as she was with the A8 (different classes), but you get it.

Looks are oh-so-sujbective. I think the GS with the standard rims is among the ugliest cars in this class. It's down there with the nondescript S80 and retro S-Type. I think the wheels on the hybrid make the car- but the body is nothing special. The E-Class with the Sport Package is nothing short of stunning. It looks like a gentleman in a tuxedo, in black, of course.

Acceleration? That doesn't drum up to much. Fast does not = performance. The old RS6 was mind-blowingly fast but it handled like an A8L. No control over the body's reflexes.

Bill, I completely agree! The GS was stunning whent it came out- but it got so old, so fast! The E-Class is timeless.

001, this article is just too subjective.

And yes, WHY DID YOU BAN CL550? His car was beautiful... maybe a little too beautiful? Did you want his car and ended up jealous of him or something? He was a very intelligent guy.

Just a note, (NOT AN OPINION) but last year I saw a 2005 BMW 530i taxi in the Barabdos. A real taxi. I'm sure they're all over europe, but this is the only BMW taxi I have ever seen. If I were to drive any taxi, this would be it.

For all of those who say 001 made the wrong choice, well then when YOU are in the market don't buy the GS! Who cares what somebody else bought? As long as he is happy with it and it fits his needs, then why does it matter? (and it was offered at no charge)

The GS is an impressive vehicle, but to me, it lacks the credentials to be a class leader. The design is classy, but it lacks the "soft elegance" of the E-Class or the "dynamism" of the Audi A6. I personally don't like the BMW 5-Series styling, but this car and the Infiniti M are the best performance cars in this class from a "driving" perspective. Also, I checked out the Lexus GS for fun, and was surprised at how small and cramped the interior was - front and rear. The transmission tunnel is very wide and takes up precious leg space. The drive compared to the Germans lacks the precision feel and handling. The brakes are weaks (confirmed by many sources). Also, the hybrid version has a small trunk, almost a joke. Seeing as you're probably single, you're not missing anything anyway.

The GS is a good car though. Great value, reliability and comfortable, but not "best in class", sorry.

Agent001, I also agree with Bill and Fabian that your negative comments about the 5-Series and E-Class design (taxi-ish) and interior aspects will help this thread easily turn into a flame war.

Anyways, congratulations on the purchase.

Excuse me? Me a liar? You Autospies Toyota fanboys are really getting on my nerves with your frankyl stupid excuses for a criticized Toyota product.

My post was honest and down to Earth. You want me to get grumpy on you? Ok, I will. Listen to this. Check the facts. The Lexus GS is small, tight and cramped on the inside. Who are they targeting with this car? Oompa Loompas? Go sit in an E-Class or an A6, then you know what a "spacious interior" is all about. Oh my, did I just insult the Lexus GS? Of course I did, I praised the Germans! Quick, call me something!

This is another thing about you wackos I'll never get. The moment someone praises a German car on Autospies, they're labelled as "German lover / fanboy" and "Japanese hater". Keep it up. And for your information, I like cars from all countries, even Fiji, so cut the trash talk.

For all those of you who are going to say that Lexus doesn't have heritage, let me say this: Toyota was around before Porsche, and they put Toyota built engines in Lexus. So, Lexus has more heritage than Porsche.

Mr Lexus IS350,

That is such an idiotic post, seriously. I'm going to tell you the bad news right now: Porsche has more prestige than Toyota. First off, you're full of BS when you claim Toyota has been around longer than Porsche. Toyota was founded in 1933; Porsche in 1931. Do the math. Second, Porsche has built better, more sophisticated engines than Toyota has ever built before Lexus came along. Want more? Porsche has more motorsport and rally success than Toyota. Porsche has been more innovative from an engineering point of view than Toyota. I'll stop here. I don't want to hurt your feelings.

Your bias is incredible. Open your eyes for a change. The world doesn't revolve around Toyota / Lexus.

Oh, big whoop, two years on Toyota. But FYI, Porsche is in a different class from Toyota. Toyotas aren't meant to have prestige. But Lexus has more prestige than Porsche. Porsche is looked at as a sports car company, not a luxury company. And give me proof that Porsche builds better engines than Toyota. Toyotas are sure as heck more dependable and durable. I know this from fact. My neighbor has a 1991 Porsche and it has spent the last three years in the shop due to engine problems. I'll stop there, I don't want to hurt your feelings by proving you wrong. And, answer me this. What do you have against Toyota Motor Co.? Is it because they are more successful than the German brands or what? You can't say they are over-rated because they aren't. So, why do you hate them? Why must you try to convince all of us that Toyota Motor Co. has so many problems when it is every bit as good as German cars. They're better in fact.

I used to have a BMW 740i with Sport Package and switched to Lexus after seeing how cheap the new Bangle BMWs felt compared with the old E38 and E39. My new GS450h is way smoother running that the BMW V8 ever was.

I am getting on average 10+ more MPG than in the E38 with better performance (Best recorded average trip MPG so far is 32.8!). Also the new GS is every bit as much a driver's car as a BMW and is a huge improvement over the previous generation.

If you are in the market for a car of this caliber do yourself a favor and take a test drive in a GS450h. Your perception of what makes a true luxury sport sedan will be changed forever. Also I have no qualms keeping this car once it's out of warranty unlike the BMW which I had to dump soon after the warranty expired.

I agree the GS is a nice car. Fit and finish is excellent, and it's not going to offend anyone with it's appearance. However:

1) the GS450h isn't all that quick. It's anywhere from .3-.9 seconds slower than a 550i or E550 depending on what test you believe. It may be slightly quicker than the old E500, but it's not as quick as the current V8's.

2) it doesn't handle like those two either, partly because you can't defeat the stability control, but mainly because Lexus doesn't tune the suspension the way BMW or Mercedes do since their buyers tend to favor a softer, less sporty ride. The only car in the class the Lexus can outhandle is the Jaguar S-Type.

3) it is a LOT smaller, both in rear seat space and in trunk space. This is also a complaint people have with the IS, which sacrifices rear seat room for throne-like front seat room. The trunk in the GS450h is actually smaller than a 3-series because of the batteries.

4) for the same $65k you could have gotten a loaded 550i, E550, or even an Infiniti M45 (and on that one you could have also saved about $10k).

5) the gas savings aren't as big a deal as people think. Assuming the car gets you an average of 5 mpg better over a 12k mile/yr driving cycle versus the other cars, that's saving you maybe $200 a year. Also, most publications, including the Automotive Leasing Guide, Edmunds, and KBB, predict that resale on hybrids will be lower than gasoline-only counterparts. There goes whatever meager savings you had on gas.

It's definitely a nice car, congrats on the purchase. You don't have to justify it by comparing it with the other cars in the class, though, especially if you're going to compare using things it doesn't do as well. Personally I'd have gotten either an Infiniti M45 (best value in the class), BMW 550i (best drive), or E550 (most stately and classy), but then we don't have carpool lanes here.

Here in Orange County California on our freeways we have carpool lanes because of the amount of traffic and California have the strongest freeways in the world because the earthquake standards.

Like one side of the freeway will have 4 lanes and 1 or 2 for the carpool lanes and sometimes more.

In fact I was reading the paper and they will be adding 4 more lanes on the 91 freeway, 2 will be carpool lanes and 2 will be E-Z Pass so you don't need to stop at toll booths.

But, a carpool lane was originally for 2 or more people and motorcycles only, but now with super clean engines that get great gas miliage they can use it when they're the only one in the car.

2) Glad you can turn off traction control now, but the car still isn't going to handle the same as the sports cars of the class because Lexus just doesn't tune their cars for that. Again, for reference see sources above.

3) trunk is a lot smaller (7.5 cu ft vs 16), occupants have anywhere from 1 in to 3 in less room in every dimension (and that's for every seat, not just the back seats).

4) the Lexus is NOT cheaper than the others. Agent001 has a photo of the MSRP sticker above. $65k. That's a loaded 550i, loaded E550, or even a loaded M45 plus $10k back to you.

5) Gas savings are about money saved, don't be silly. They're also about people deluding themselves into thinking that they're doing the planet a favor by using 80 gallons less gas a year. You really want to help the world? Donate your $65k to charity. Don't pretend that driving a car covered with the skin of slaughtered cows and cut down trees is saving anything just because it uses a little less gas. They just make people THINK they're accomplishing something while Lexus rolls in the cash. That makes Lexus smart, and it shows how sheeplike consumers can be.

Retarded that you can drive in the car pool lane but only get 28 MPG. What is next, 20 MPG SUV in the car pool lane. I find this really silly as many gasoline powered cars have the same exact (lack of) emmisions as the Lexus hybrid.

Holy crap!

Why is it every article that is even remotely positive about Lexus has to become some anti-Toyota/Lexus bash fest?

I still can't believe there are so many people who live in some prescribed culture world that says that only the Germans create truly good cars.

This Lexus is not going to be the dream car for everyone. Lexus knows this. Agent 001 knows this. Let it go. If you live in a mindset where the mere thought of a BMW or Mercedes is cause for a wet dream than fine. You must realize that Lexus makes good cars and there are people that like them however.

Liking any Lexus does not mean you don't like or own other makes including German (I'm fricking living proof of that!).

To those that say Lexus fans are too vocal here I must remind you that Lexus is the most bashed brand here. Defending Lexus in these posts is seen as a negative, while defending the German brands is seen as totally acceptable. Why the hell is that? If Lexus is truly so beneath the others, why do you people feel threatened enough to discredit every single sentence of a positive Lexus article.

So many haters on this particular blog just because 001 chose a GS450H and he blew away any preconceive notions of it.
Give him a F**king break. Most of you guys who are posting commments have never even test drove the car yourself, believing all these stupid reviews by German bias magazines. Correct me if I"m wrong but didn't CNET.com gave the LS460L a 10 based on daily driving...hello key words "daily driving". In other words..they didn't need to take a corner doing 80MPH and because they couldn't find any fault with the car. The GS450H, honestly, the interiors looks generations better than a E or a 5Series. And before you respond to that, why don't you go and sit in one and don't just stare at the pictures and base it on that. BTW--I drive a LS460L and I love it. It drives just as well as a 7Series (I test drove both, thank you, including the S550 so that makes 3).
So before you start criticizing 001 for choosing the GS450H..why don't you do yourself a favor and go test drive one. Most of you guys would probably lie about it anyway and bash Lexus...typical German fans.
All my credentials goes to owning a 2001 Audi A6, 1998 7Series, 1995 SClass, which BTW, all gave me problems until I started driving a lexus. I'm sure there some out there without any problems, unfortunately for me I saw the shops frequently.

Let's get one thing straight.

001 didn't buy this car. It is a 'long-term loaner'.

Is it just me, (a real car enthusiast, so sorry if I offend some of you mere consumers -being a car consumer doesn't mean you are an enthusiast) or does knowing that this 'performance' comes from a silent, piston-less electric motor seem somewhat un-car like?

Performance is good, I agree. But in my experience of cars with powerful engines but 'cruising' dynamics (GS450H), you soon get used to the shove in the back of your seat, but yearn for more communicative steering and tidier handling.

Strangely enough, having direct, communicative steering (not overly light and slow) makes a car better to drive in ANY situation, whether it be tackling a mountain road or driving around town.

I think that saying the GS is better than any of its rivals shows a lack of appreciation for a 'balanced' car. One that ticks all the boxes.

I can see that the E-Class's engineers have struck the right balance in terms of comfort and impressive handling, something a car enthusiast appreciates, because we enthusiasts like comfort too!

Sadly, I happen to find the GS ugly. The belt line is so high that the car looks bulkier than it should, and the plump rump and fussy, cheap-looking slat grille is at odds with the understated philosophy.

I understand that many Americans have different automotive priorities, stuck in traffic jams for most of the day obviously numbs the senses which would otherwise compel you to purchase an exciting car.

I so agree. The E-Class is too good not to be considered. I've been saying this time and time again- it truly is the perfect balance between comfort/luxury, style/elegance and handling/performance. It may not have Lexus reliability, but it being in the shop once a year is a fair price to pay for a car that's one of the most perfect cars on this Earth.

Before, it was the 5 Series- but they've changed it to the extent that the interior is unattractive and it doesn't relax you like the E, GS or A6.

I also agree about the GS's styling. The previous generation, while an even more blatant rip-off of the E-Class, was very well-executed and didn't look old in its last year. I truly admired its design and thought most Lexi should look like that- GS400 was a cool sedan. But, they basically pumped the car with hot air and added Camry-esque rear lamps and called it a radical redesign. The car looks old already.

I think he’s still driving around San Diego in a fog wondering what happened"

I bet he was thinking, wow the back of that Lexus is fat.

oh what fun it is to have highway drag races -a real test of any cars performance credibility. Sure....

I bet if the same scenario was set against some mountain roads, the GS would would be left for dead against the S500. The S500 has agility which belies its weight, wheras the GS would be scrubbing into understeer, front tyres squealing for mercy.

"wonderful piece of engineering" Is that right?

I just don't see it. A large car, average amount of interior space, a powerful engine stuffed into a chassis that can't deploy it, and poor brakes.

Gee Wizz, I bet NASA is dismantling one as we speak!

Agent 001 you get graced with this great task, & you go and screw it up by choosing the GS over the E-Class?

I tend to get bored of cars quick...Thus the reason I've never even bothered to consider a Lexus over the 3 marque German brans, or even Infininti for that matter.

Toyota fans might jump on me for this one, but just let me say...Anyone who KNOWS ANY & EVERYTHING about cars, would never say Lexus is my favourite car company. I'm talking like automotive industry legends, race car drivers, or even more modern car buffs like Jay Leno or Funkmaster Flex would NEVER NEVER NEVER...Consider Lexus the best!

Why? These are all people who love cars that embody the things that Lexus does not...Character, prestige, expressiveness, & above all fun.

You know, its not that 001 is praising the car, after all it is a great car, no doubt, but its the extremes he goes to mimimalize the competition in a very juvenile way for the purpose of creating hype and a flame war. Specifically comparing the competition to a taxi in terms of design then to play the boy racer with another driver by "crushing his ego for life" What pure drivel.

Didnt 001 just get back from Beijing and the E-Class drive from Paris? What happened to all the praises and well crafted articles? It just seems a completely different person wrote this...I expect a more mature approach and let the fanboys comments ignite the wars.

markusck, I loved the E-Class when I drove it out in Napa this summer. It's been a long time since I was suprised by a car, and it's sportiness really overwhelmed me. I've always considered the Mercedes the Luxury-Sport company and BMW the Sport-Luxury, but after driving the E with the sport package, it's really opened my eyes. I need to setup a time when I can drive both 550's back to back, the MB E550 and the BMW 550i. It would be a great comparison.

Please, for the love of GOD understand my description of the E-Class design as Taxi-ish does NOT mean I think its as ugly as a taxi. It means that the exterior design is is more conservative looking than I would like it to be and is too utitilitarian looking sometimes in my eyes vs. the pure sex look of a CLS.

The GS has more seduction in its exterior design in my opinion.

It doesn't mean I don't like the E-Class. The E-Class is an awesome car as well but the exterior design doesn't capture me as much as the new GS.

Mercedes knows this, that's why I can guarantee you the next E-Class will have many CLS queues...

I know what you were trying to convey 001; opinions are fine, but add the taxi comment to the Chrysler interior comment and the over the top praise for a car you have had for a few days...what did you expect people to just let that go? No seriously, the GS, was good looking the 1st time i saw it, 2nd time, it was just another german wannabe. The interior, looks like a 5 year old mercedes, but the quality is high. The performance, the other 2 will leave u in the dust, it just saves some cash.

CONCLUSION: Lexus tried as hard as they can to beat the germans, but still failed due to the reason that this car is just a rebadged camry hybrid. Even the interior looks like the new camry!

Could someone please explain to me what the definition of a luxury car is? I can never understand the argument that Lexus is not a luxury car because it is really a Toyota. I looked up the definition of the word "luxury" and found words like:

-Refinement (Lexus generally accepted as tops)

-Elegance (The old Lexi not so much but I believe the new designs are. BMW definitely does not meet this criteria)

-Indulgence (I guess it means excess. I think you can't get more excessive than self-parking)

-Comfort (a common complaint of Lexus that they are not sporty enough but too quite and soft, and therefore comfortable)

Other descriptions talk of technology and finer material, like the leather as measures of luxury. I think Lexus delivers there as well.

I'm not biased towards Lexus (I'd be very happy if I had a Lexus or BMW or Merc or Audi or Jagetc, etc, etc.) but the argument that Lexus can't really compete with Merc and BMW because its really a Toyota seems ridiculous to me. Somehow if a Fiat could make a car that delivered the comfort, convenience and technology of a MB, I think thats a luxury car.

I test drove the G450H at the recent "Taste of Lexus" event down in Irvine. Aesthetics aside I found the biggest flaw to be the CVT transmission. Great acceleration but NO top end. No matter how many times I drove it I couldn't get used to not having any gears. Even with the tiptronic controls you still don't get the response you would get from a BMW 5 speed auto transmission with the same power.

Maybe deserving, maybe not.

I guess if all the roads you drive in are straight and you feel as if you're helping to reverse global warming with the 3 mpg difference (from the 5 & E) then the GS450H is alright.

But, if Car and Driver likens the dynamics of the GS to a Lincoln Town Car, I think I’ll pass and still put up with the 5-series styling.

Oh, I take back what I said.

I like the GS450h a lot- although I think the E is more elegant, the GS's interior is equal to it (and in some areas, better; in some the E is better), and it has effortless acceleration with good (not great, but good- better than most) gas mileage.

Although it's not exactly a fuel miser, it gets the job done, with how it's faster than both the 350 and 430 and gets better mileage than both.

One thing I don't understand is the relationship between the 350 and the 430. I know it'll become the GS460, but for now, how does Lexus plan on selling any last-minute GS430s if the GS350 is faster and less expensive?
