Mercedes AMG C55 vs Audi RS4

Auto-Motor-und-Sport has put the Mercedes AMG C55 against the RS4 for a very fun comparison test (well fun for the drivers). While both cars are great, both being outfitted with great powerful engines, it seems that the aging Mercedes model needs even more power to catch the RS4. Take a look and you'll see what I am talking about.

Destroyed. The RS4 destroys the C55.

Correct, the S4 beat both the C55 AMG and the BMW M3 in that test, and in others as well. Of course BMW fans chose to ignore those results.

you're correct, the S4 came in first place in that Car & Driver comparison test, with the M3 second and the C55 third. But before you get up on your pedestal about it, keep in mind the S4 didn't "beat" the other cars in any measurable statistic. It was the heaviest and slowest, and the main reason cited in the article for it being named the winner over the M3 was the fact that it had four doors. Typically a "performance" magazine puts more emphasis on performance, and in this case the S4 trailed both the others. For whatever reason they went the other way in that test and made utilitarianism the deciding factor. That's not a knock on the S4, which is a fine machine, but don't get ahead of yourself with the "Audi rules" statements.

Don't you think the S4 would have been a better match? Let's see the C63 vs the RS4.

C63, no such thing yet. Also, reports have said that a reworked (4 valve DOHC) version of the current C55 engine (or the new E and S class 550 V8) with 400 or so hp will be the AMG version for the C class. But that hasn't been confirmed yet. We will just have to wsit and see what AMG the C class will have.

The S4 is 54,000 Euro in Germany. The RS4 is closer in price to the C55 than the S4 is.

Uhh, 450hp C63 AMG against 344hp S4??? What are you smoking???

The new C AMG will have at LEAST that much- the CLK AMG, currently the least powerful 63 model, has 480hp!

Didnt they stop selling the C55 in the US this year. My local benz dealer wanted to sell me a 2006 model for $42,000 USD. I passed.

Yes no such thing as a 2007 C55 AMG. Now you had a very good deal offered considering that a 2006 C55 AMG starts at 54,450.

well.. i did think the c55 was a stepin the wrong direction. However, i belive the c63 amg will be significantly faste rthan both teh c32 and c55. ATleast, hopefully. it owuld be nice for the amg tuned C class to finally compete with others such as the s/rs4, the m3, g35, and upcoming IS-f.

i would have agree the fact that a 420hp rs4 outran a car of the same size with alot less hp isnt accomplishment but hey its an audi i guess they need that....the fact that this car ran as close to a car with that much more power, and is on its last year shows how far behind the audi really is.....cadillac's cts-v is running the same numbers as the rs4 and better on some according autoweek, all these cars are about to be replaced, and this overpriced thing just came out....audi is always a step behind..

BMW has delayed the M3 for 14 months now

WHERE IS THE FAMED M3? Hurry BMW the RS4 only has one year left.
the anouncment of the delay the week the RS4 came out was funny though. Yes BMW Audi is behind... Looser

The current C class came out as a 2001 model year car. The RS4 is based on the A4 that came out as a 2002 model year car. Not much difference. And the new A4 will most likely be shown this year. Same as the new C class. The RS4 was 6/10 quicker. That is quite significant. 4.4 vs. 5.0 to 62 mph. The RS4 has done 0-60 in 4.3 seconds.

people forget how heavy the audi RS4 is 3960 lbs, with 420 hp, just 50 lbs lighter than 507 hp BMW M5. the new M3 with similar power and 200 to 300 lbs lighter will once again set the standard.

"Chewy" what are you trying to prove...Everybody already knows the RS4 was going to beat the C55. Yeah it might have been uptaded last year with some more power but the platform is 4 years old.

So don't worry, when the new M3 arrives & blows the socks of the RS4...We might let you use the "It's an older car" excuse.

Well, the current S4 has beaten the M3 in numerous comparison tests. The next generation S4 will come with 400 or so hp. It might be a bit slower, but it can quite possibly beat the new M3 once again, or the S5.

This from Autoweek and a RS4 owner describing his car:

"There are lots of quality glitches with less than 5000 miles: suspension hydraulic failure, vacuum hose rupture, missing bolts from exhaust heat shield, loose fuel tank insulation cover and windows that go down by themselves. If Audi gets quality up, it might have the perfect car."

The RS4 is much sportier hands down,I did not see any sporty features or design lines on the Mercedes!!I think the Mercedes is much more suitable for older people, and the Audi does appeal more to the younger people due to the more aggressive design lines.Unless Mercedes changes the design,I think it's only going to be a three way race between the RS4,M3,and IS-F in the sport sedan category!!!

-----------

I disagree on the "EXTREMELY LUXURIOUS" sports sedan. It has luxury cues to it's design but it's not extreme. Same goes for the C55 but if you compare the two, the C is closer to luxury than the RS4 is. The RS4 is simply a monster with a nice sporty interior that happens to wear the Audi badge.

----------------------

IMO a person who buys an RS4 probably wouldn't look at a C55 and it goes both ways. It targets different age groups. The older consumers will look at the Merc where as the younger generations who know more about Audi will lean towards Audi. It's totally different taste in design (in and out).

There's one thing we can ALL agree on here despite all the different views on these two amazing pieces of engineering. THEY BOTH GOT GRUNTS THAT IS SIMPLY EPIC!

Too bad their share nothing in common. The RS4 has an engine that Jeremy Clarkson called," quite possibly the best ever" (paraphrasing). He also said that the M3 will need to come with a free moon to be better than the RS4.

Car and Driver gives Audi some respect and wins a comparison test and it is such a big deal. what about the decades of BMW and Mercedes success and comparison wins, BMW 3series/M3,a record 16 years in a row a top 10 car, the several awards BMW wins that don't get mentioned on autospies. But yes, wow finally audi wins some a magazine test.

Who cares about the past, in this case we are comparing the current M3 and the current S4 that defeated the current M3 (and C55 as well). I don't care if BMW of the past were sportier than the old Audis.

----

No doubt, the RS4 still has luxury but in a sporty kind of way. It's a beautiful car, it's just the price tag IMO is kind of high. Even the S4 I think is a bit high. Makes me wonder how much VW/Audi had to fork out to produce this engine or how much they had to pay their engineers to come out with such a monstrous motor that they need to jack up the price.
