Honda Sees Sales Record for 2006

Honda Motor Co. said Tuesday it expects worldwide sales to rise 5 percent to an all-time high of 3.55 million vehicles this year amid booming overseas demand.

Honda expects U.S. sales to rise 3 percent to 1.51 million vehicles in 2006, marking a sales record for the 10th consecutive year.

Soaring U.S. sales of light trucks and sport utility vehicles, especially the Honda CR-V, led the overseas increase at Japan's No. 3 automaker, President Takeo Fukui told reporters at a year-end press conference Tuesday. To meet demand, he said Honda's Mexico plant would begin making CR-Vs in late 2007.

Honda has some very nice vehicles. I love the Odyssey. The only one I am not crazy about is the Ridgeline. I really don't understand all the hoopla about that vehicle.

The Ridgeline is to "real" pick-em-ups as the german SUVs are to "real" 4-wheelers.

they can do LIGHT duties in supposedly rugged REAL HE-MAN venues, but aren't expected to do heavy lifting. the forte in both situations are COMFY, softer rides, and far more SPORTY handling on pavement.

plus, the ridgey DOES have the unique features of a lockable "trunk" and 2-way tailgate. for use in suburbia (as opposed to on farms and construction sites), it can be actually BETTER than traditional p/us.

i'm not sure where honda ranks, as far as global production figures.

but it seems ONLY HONDA has the attractive products and MOMENTUM to give chase to toyota. report just today projects toyota will bypass gm for #1 in 2007.

maybe by 2012 honda will be angling for #3 or even #2?
