Carbon Ceramic Brakes Becoming More Mainstream

The brakes used in high-end sports cars made by the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini may soon make their way in to less exotic offerings. A report from AutoWeek says that Audi is working together with a German company, SGL Carbon, to streamline the production process for carbon brakes and therefore make them more affordable. As the name suggest, these brakes use carbon fibre and ceramic components that can withstand the high temperatures that cause normal brakes to fade under stress.

the report states that the price for ceramic brakes could come down to around US$500 per disc, which makes optioning a car much more economically viable at around $2000.

Or possibly the S8- the S65 is mad fast, but the S8 is just really fast. But the inside is better (slightly- it's more special with carbon fiber and all), it has bigger rims (20s), it has AWD and a more understated look. Depends on your taste, really.

I know.

I just said that for someone who wants something less extreme (and has AWD), then the S8 is the way to go.

No, the S65 doesn't have standard 20s. They're either 18s or 19s- I forget.

Oh, I take that back!

Just checked the Benz website. It clearly says 20" five-spokes are standard.

However, I saw a black S8 (yes, the new one) in the city tonight... it's simply beautiful. The wheels, the grille, the bodykit, the V10 badges- all awesome.

the thing is qithcarbon/ceramic brakes...they squeal. like pigs. and have no feel at low temps and speeds.

Yes, carbon fiber brakes are for race cars and carbon/ceramic mix is for cars. Audi is working on getting the price down 6 times cheaper. Go Audi.

The S63 is a MONSTER, but that's the thing..in twisties, the S8 will just spank it.
AMG cars are incredibly fast, but can't handle well.

AMG cars don't handle well? Yeah right.

The latest AMG models, S63 included, have been praised immensely in driving tests for their amazing handling and dynamics, many stating that making a car this large handle with such agility and poise is nothing short of amazing.

The old recirculating-ball steering on old Merc's may have led to this 'poor-handling' stereotype, but believe me when I say the new AMG range is nothing short of incredible in every regard.
