DETROIT AUTO SHOW: Will this concept obsolete the Chevrolet Corvette? Photo Gallery
After seeing this concept and having the time to let the innovative beauty sink in, I just can't help but think a few thoughts about it...

One, why doesn't the Corvette look this nice and two, if they make this will it obsolete the Chevrolet's iconic sportscar?

Toyota is on a roll these days and it seems like they just can't do anything wrong.

There is no doubt, that this is the leading candidate for the best concept at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show.

And the show has not even started!

No matter WHAT anyone else shows, this one is going to be hard to beat in our opinion!

Forget the Camaro convertible, this is the one! Full Detroit Auto Show gallery

MDalle I agree, that concept stinks!!

Honestly, I totally ignored the brand when I checked the pics, and my first impression: Thats an ugly concept.

Bye the way, MDalle your argument here was excellent, and your comment about the NSX was also fair, I just cant understand why the time stood still for Honda and failed to make it better, did they lost interest or they were just admitting that they couldn't maintain a good level of competition in the sub supercar segment.

Regarding Agent 001 question: Will this concept obsolete the Chevrolet Corvette? I don't think so, those bizzare looking concepts are just sore to the eyes.

The Corvette is not a concept car. This is a concept car (one that quite a lot of people don't thing is amazing)

Has any one noticed how the interior is modeled after the R8? I'm sure it's just a coincidence.

Why people keep saying this looks like an Audi TT's R8?

Give some credits to Toyota. You may not like it but it does have its unique look and some cool design thoughts.

Did you notice that the interior styling looks like a supra's interior but just played with in the computer design area. The center console has the sway around the driver like the old supra. My deduction leads to be that this is going to be the concept for the new supra.

About time Toyota showed the new Supra. We faithful have been wondering why it took so long, forgot about the new Tundra, even the new Corolla intro in the States had to be delayed a bit. This is well worth the wait though! Also explains the 2 different LFA prototypes spotted testing the last year or so..:) If you can buy a base IS in the mid 30s (good luck finding it) They can definatly start this in the upper 30s base WITH the hybrid powertrain. Remember also, Supra's have had 2 engine options in the past, I'm thinking a 5.7 litre D.O.H.C. Turbo unit at 60k+ to comprte with GTR, Z06, GT500 ect. Leaves the mid engine LFA at 510+ hp to compete with Aston, Porsche Turbo, R8, ect. IS500 Coupe and Sedan for the M3 and Audi V8 sport sedans. Anyone think this isn't already a done deal @ Toyota/Lexus please explain why not!
BTW, I'll buy one!

Will, This is a concept from CALTY. They just put a fancy body on a GS 450 Hybrid. Hope for production is about as likely as you driving a German car.

Hey Will, I didn't say anything bad about the car, I just stated a fact. The concept is a shortened wheelbase GS450. I actually think the car looks pretty good, but production bound, it ain't.

Djeez guys you can't possible expect that every car designer come with their own completely new design. It is like with clothes (not that i expect you guys to know anything about this). Every designer add their own touch but you can see what the style will be for clothing, the same counts for cars.

This is definitely one the most beautiful concept I have ever seen. Hopefully Toyota/Lexus gave it the go soon, so that will roll of production in the next few years. I really think it has alot of similarity to Lexus LF-A. I don't care what badge it come in, I just want one, and I want it now.

Does any one care that obsolete isn't a verb?

RupertRupert - 12/27/2006 7:18:30 PM

obsolete is not a verb. you cannot obsolete something. you can "render something obsolete" or make something obsolete though.

I think the only thing this design will make obsolete is the designer. I simply cannot understand why such ugly designs are going through the top brass...

maybe because its the best that Toyota has to offer ... hey, we're talking about the company that inflicted the Echo on North America..... I may think this concept is ugly, but I'm glad that Toyota is getting off the "ultra-bland" band-wagon ... the new Camry is actually interesting looking!

Auto Spies is trying to hype this car up, but a lot of us non-die-hard Lexus fans who can actually see past the ā€˜L’ on the hood...find it unattractive and non-appealing.

2. The Camaro looks much better.

i like the way the roof folds. i think it is clever and a good way to make a convertible without a whole big folding-hard-top thing. clever idea, they should use it. wait a second, i've just remembered something. the MR2 and the Celica went to be replaced by a FOLDING HARDTOP. this car has FOLDING HARDTOP. so this is the celica replacement then....doubt it rivals the corvette at all. i expect a 2.0 litre, 3.0 v6 at the biggest. perhaps hybrid, not sure. honestly, i think this might be FWD, it will be hard to fit that roof in with RWD.

I think the style looks like they tried to hard. Not very smooth either, looks like it'll have some bad results if it's wind tunnel tested. Yep tried to hard to be sleek and wound up looking like a ten year old's favorite paper airplane design, that won't fly well. but maybe it will that nose will push alot of air down to the ground, not good for handeling.

Looks like a Nissan Z rip off, and that aint sayin much. When are they going to let the California design studio have some freedom from the elderly Japanese executives?

I agree it should be called 'the snow plow' lol.

At first I thought GM made this concept car car as the writer mention it to be a Corvette replacement. As the owner of a new Corvette, my first reaction was on no!!! After reading further I found it to be a Toyota. Oh, thank God!! This car is ugly ugly but of course for those Toyota lovers, it is great. Like someone said Toyota can do no wrong, but I think the glory days of Toyota will come to an end.

This site is degenerating everyday with what people will post as articles. So trivial, preposterous and juvenile in nature. No car will ever make the Corvette "obsolete" in any way. Obsoletism is also a relative and speculative term where one's perspective may differ from another's. Anyone can just present articles here with little to no filtering from the site administrators on the quality of content and how this continues to reflect increasingly poorly on this site and its participants. I understand a forum for the public and the intent for this, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere. There is scarce editorial merit or responsibility. Getting akin to ghetto graffiti. Guess I'm just shocked to see some of the things I see here. Not everyone is this thoughtless. There are of course, some good articles here. Pardon my little rant.

Corvette obsolete? What planet did you say you're from?

the Looks? Actually, I kinda like it in all photos except the main one ... its that nose.
Here's what happened:

Lead Designer: "We are finished boss. What do you think?"

Manager: "You did a good job with the R8 shape, but you were supposed to disguise the origin better!"

Lead Designer: "We can't change anything now ... except maybe the front."

Manager: "Its for the Detroit show. Those Americans ... they like whales ... you know, Free Willy! and all that ... how about a whale's nose?"

Lead Designer: "You're the boss."

... and so, it came to be ;)
