Photo Leak: Is This the New Toyota Supra?

Just yesterday Toyota launched FT-HS Hybrid Sports concept which is rumored to hint at what the next (if returning) Toyota Supra would look like. Well on our digg post of the story a user posted a comment saying that the FT-HS is not the next Supra and provided us the image you see above showing what could be the next Toyota Supra. In fact, he really has us sold that this could possibly be the next and new Toyota Supra and if this is, Toyota will definitely give the BMW 3-Series, Nissan Z, Infiniti G35 and the Cadillac CTS a run for their money. It seems from these images that the next Toyota Supra will be a hardtop convertible. Here is what the Japanese magazine had written about the car pictured above:


-5L V8 @ 450HP (2UR-FSE)
-3.5L V6 @ 350HP(2GR-FSE)
-Curb weight: 1400Kg or 3086lbs (not sure with which motor, V6/V8)
-N/A tuned only from factory (possible aftermarket turbo kits)
-2600mm or 102 inch wheelbase
-Stock 19?rims
-Highend V8 Model to cost upwards of $50,000
-Basic V6 Model to cost just over $40,000 (US) but $25,000 in Japan (with current exchange rate)

Let the real "Spies" please stand up. This site has let it's article postings go to the dogs. There is no regard for accuracy and editorial merit whatsoever anymore. I could post about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and say I saw it flying by over highway 7 or something and it would fit in with so many other articles here, sadly.

No, not really. They have a mixture of the old supra, with the new styling of the 21st century in this car. I like it. Look at the white convertible. That's actually really good looking.

I think the prices are a bit off... from what I understand, they want to place it very close (if not less than) to the Nissan 350. They may be pulling for the MX5 / Sky / Solstice crowd as well. I could see the v8 version being priced around g35.

One thing I don't like about Toyota is that they lack a design theme between all their cars, no continuity between models, ecept the small (vanilla in my opinion) cars.

actually, there ARE similaries.

i was looking out the window at a coffee shop once, and noted 3 cars next to each other: a current generation Corolla, an earlier generation Camry, and also an earlier Lexus.

there was indeed a family resemblance with all 3. and surprisingly, the Corolla could nearly pass for a mini-Lexus.

it WOULD make a lot of sense. TWO beautiful desireable models at different price points. little more than ONE model's development costs.

if any company knows how to MAKE MONEY, toyota/lexus does!

They ripped off the Z in front and sides, and completely ripped off the S2000 in the back. I just don't get Toyota sometimes. The LS460 looks great, as does even the Camry (first one I've liked since they started making them). The old LF-H concept looked good too. But the latest LF or whatever concept sucks and this car has no originality. Hell, I even see Maserati in the front-end, plus the stolen BMW wheels. It sorta fits together except for the wheels and that awful side scoops a' la Mustang.

it is quite COMMON for elements of car design to be shared. whether thru common usage, or designers being inspired by the same source.

AutoWeek once had an article about this; studios are accused of copying when NO SUCH THING occurred.

besides, the old cliche "there is nothing new under the sun" often IS true. so that even the most original and imaginative stylists cannot help (unintentionally) "borrowing" style elements.

e.g. the Hoffmeister Link, attributed to bmw, goes as far back as late '40s gm fastback sedans. and 1950s vintage Kaisers. look at the last especially, for HOW AWFUL the design devolved. kaiser probably KILLED it for a few decades, until it was cleaned up in its modern incarnation.

chris bangle/bmw did his own "kaiserization" of a previous clean design, with the "Bangle Butt."

a clean fastback line, from roof down to modern integrated bumper, was melded over the basic lower body box in a previous generation nissan maxima. the bangle butt sort of "copied" it, but with a more pronounced trunk bump out. it was outstandingly ugly and people took note of it, while the previous clean nissan design had gone almost completely ignored.

except by the japanese (and latterly everyone else), who adapted the nissan meld job to their own new models. most of what people call "copies" of the bangle are actually more like the nissan theme. CLEANER and far less offensive.

even bmw, in toning down the Butt, now approaches the original nissan cleaner look.
