Detroit Auto Show: The Corvette Z06's Goose Has Just Been Cooked By This!!
Ah yes, the 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10, a car that "ignited" a few journalistic plugs today. So what’s so important here? Apart from the fact that it was supposed to be officially revealed in a couple of weeks, it gained an extra 90Hp thanks to its revised V10 engine.

More specifically, the V10 aluminum engine block was revised for a 1-millimeter larger bore, raising the displacement to 8.4 liters from 8.3 liters. It also breathes through new cylinder heads equipped with Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC)-shaped combustion chambers, larger valves and Variable Valve Timing (VVT). These changes raise output to 600 Hp.

The Corvette still has the more bang for the buck and still LOOKS BETTER!

well the Z06 engineering is far superior to the Viper's. Strapping a larger engine to it won't change the fact that the Z06 can outhandle the Viper any day.

Oh yeah, and the Mustang GT is a POS...I wouldn't be caught dead in one of those things, not to mention it's worth about $15k the minute you drive it off the lot.

I find it funny that Dodge has to use a V10 and Ford has to use a Supercharged Dual Overhead Cam V8 to make the kind of HP that GM is making out of the small block pushrod V8. HMMMMM I wonder why that is?

There is no car that can compete with the Z06 when it comes to bang for the buck. The new Z06 is the best handling car on the road and one of the quickest in quarter mile ET if not the quickest.

Guffadoodles, Go buy your black/blue GT with 20's and get run over by the next Z06 you see, I am sure the owners will get a kick out of it!!!

I don't know, probably because Ford's engine is smaller than the Z06's. It's also a DOHC design instead of the old-school pushrod GM still uses. And 550hp and 500lb-ft of torque from a 5.4L engine is pretty good, especially considering the supercharger is a Roots-type blower designed for torque, not hp. GM "only" gets 505hp and 470lb-ft out of 7 liters.

figures based on the Ford GT, not the GT500.

Recent Road comparison tests have actually indicated that the Viper had more stable handle then the Z06 at the limit. Prior to this engine update in the Viper the Z06 was quicker in a staight line. That said the Z06 is a more complete auto package with a far more comfortable interior and controls. As for the Mustang. It really does not compare. You cannot take a live axle car with extreme front weight balance (as in GT500)and make a reasonable comparison to 2 vehicles that weigh at least 500 LBS less, have a lower center of gravity and similar power.Ford has done a reasonable job with the GT500 but frankly for agility I'd take the Hertz Shelby simply because the thing weighs so less. With the new 8.4 V10 the Viper will be the car to beat for performance plain and simple!

330CI 5.4 liter Ford with 4 cams and a 10 pounds of boost from a Roots-type supercharger making 550hp is pretty good, but you can't knock that GM is still making the same kind of power with a small block, granted its 427 inches but it technology that has its basis in the 1950's. Dodge has over 500 inches and two more cylinders; if it didn't make 600 hp it would be an embarrassment.

You can keep the Viper it will never out sell the Corvette and that’s really all that matters.

For clarification didn't the Ford GT make 550 but in the Mustang GT500 it makes 500. Correct! In regard to engine size versus HP it's true. For it's engine size Dodge should be making way more HP then Corvette or Mustang. But if you take the car as a whole with power to weight ratio the Viper at 600 HP kills a Mustang and until the Vette gets the supercharger it now #2. But why are people even comparing a Stang here anyway. The Viper is and has always been a limited production vehicle.

Viper is not trying to "outsell" the Corvette. You saying that Viper not outselling Corvette is "all that matters" is not only incorrect, but begs the question of your understanding of automotive marketing sectors.

Listen no car is better than another one it is about who drives it and how good they are at driving it a yugo can beat this viper if the viper has a bad driver (like all exotics have rich putz owners who cant drive) everyone has their taste but dont shove your preference down others throats that is wrong it is right for us to admire cars and not take a vain look at them. we are enthusiasts not imps running around talking about who is better.

bulldogz,

I don't think you get what he is saying. A faster/sporty car doesn't make a good driver. A good driver is a good driver regardless of what they are currently behind the wheel of.

going to be fast, that is for sure. Anyways, am I the only one that is going to comment on that pathetic interior? Looks like it came strait out of a neon.

A Mustang interior is nice but in truth it does not hold a candle to Audi when it comes to interiors. Audi makes the best quality auto interiors in the industry-EG Bently Continental GT. One reason is they use real metal, real wood, real leather etc. I'm not knocking Mustang as they have build to a price but you really cannot compare the two.

VW-Audi do make some of the best interiors in the industry, but they have no hand in the interior of the Bentley Continental. Bentley has been making top quality interiors for many decades before VW bought the company.

Damn, that Viper is a monster.

Now if Dodge would just refine the body to that of a Ferrari.

You know, tighten it up.

But the Viper is an American car with a totally different personality then the Italian Stallion. A Viper is really an exotic muscle car in the van of the AC Cobra. It was never meant to have the refinement of a Ferrari or Vette.

I think the z06 would eat it's lunch even down a 100 hp. The viper has NEVER gotten good reviews as far as handling and control are concerned. Such a lovely interior too. Still using the hand brake from the Le Baron are we?

It is untrue that Viper has never received positive reviews for handling. Several mags were surprised at how well it handled and reported as much. And if you actually read the article you would see that this car has many refinements that you and your kind ignore. As one whom appreciates many cars, including the new Z06 and this new Viper, I feel that there is room to value them both, not show such shallow mentality as to desecrate one over the other. Finally, if the current Z06 just nudges the Viper (roadster with top down!) as has been seen in *some* tests, how on earth with the Z06 still prevail with the Viper getting another 90 HP? Your logic reveals its flaws all around in your post.

Everything is normal except the brilliant high quality interior that is sooo luxury and sporty at the same time, with all that, i predict it will sell like hot cakes if not more! The engine is a class leader ; very efficient and powerful. The exterior is stylish and monstrous. This car is the best....... :P

I agree the Viper interior is garbage, but I can't believe that no one has ever read that it really is a good track car. The first article I found was from Motor Trend, here it is:

"We spent a full afternoon running hot laps around the short Willow Springs circuit--and, yes, we get paid to do this stuff. The Viper and the Vette were virtually dead even, with the Dodge a mere hundredth of a second ahead of its Bow-Tie rival. Test driver Neil Chirico reports that the Viper was easier to push hard than the Z06, though, proving stable in corners and under braking--particularly impressive, given that the Viper chassis has no electronic stability aids other than ABS. Chirico sums it up in a single word: "grip." The Z06 can pull 0.97 g in corners, but the Viper's good for 1.02. And while the V-10 is a truck engine at heart, it's no low-revving lump. On the track it comes into its own, revving freely and easily right to its 6000-rpm redline. All of which exposes the Viper for what it really is: a thinly disguised race car with a radio and turn signals for street use."

Precisely. The only surprise is, why can't you "believe it" that most here would be woefully unaware of this? This forum is full of emotional posters that type their scant (non-researched) perceptions as fact. With a pro-Euro mentality, they perceive all US sportscars as straightline only cars. They only very recently were forced to digest that Z06 was an agile car after *numerous* reports could not be denied. Surely they would be in the dark on the Viper too.
