The end of Germany's Autobahns?

Some of the last remaining roads that offer drivers completely unlimited speeds are under attack by environmentalists. They claim introducing a limit could help reduce greenhouse gases, something Germany is currently lagging behind in. Only 30% of Germany’s Autobahn road network is speed limited, while the rest allows drivers to travel at whichever speed they feel is safe for the conditions.

Even in the span that I was over there (2001 and 2005) I noticed more of the bahns were having speed limits put on them.

I'm so glad I at least got to chance to drive them with no restrictions while I could. I fear at the rate things are going the next time i go back I'll be limited to 130kmph :(

Maybe it's time to send those creeps to Cuba where they can live in communist bliss.

cawimmer, what I was referring to was when I was over there earlier certain stretches (the A95 from Munich to Garmisch, and the A6 from Kaiserslautern in both the east and west, and the A63 from Mainz down to K-town) were unrestricted (I remember an M5 flying by me like i was standing still when I was pulling 220km/h). But I remembered when I went back in 2005 some of the roads that used to be unrestricted now had 130 speed limits on them.

I'm just saying more and more over time they are placing restrictions on more sections.

Manufacturers are already making huge advances in the reduction of exhaust emissions, and I'd hazard a guess that a 2007 M5 at 250kmh would produce fewer emissions that its 1970s equivalent travelling at half the speed. Rather than regulating, they should be encouraging further R&D - it's so much more progressive.

The whole world is buying into this socialist bull that "Global Warming" is somehow Man's fault. There is absolutely no science that tell us this, yet because Al Gore and his chronies claim its true then it must be. I guess "the gloves don't fit" so we must look the other way!!

Germany has done more for the environment than the US, Huu. Quit the bashing with stupid statements.

There should be no speed limits on any highway with 2 or more lanes outside of city limits.
