Will An Upcoming Audi Turbo 5 Spell Doom For The New BMW Turbo 6?
Rumor is that Audi is developing a modern 5-cylinder turbocharged FSI engine for an upcoming TTS or TT RS model. Though it’d be mounted transversely in the TT, the idea of an in-line 5, particularly one with the latest in FSI injection technology certainly draws attention at the very mention. Having heard this rumor, I’ve asked just about anyone with the four ring logo on their business card for a gauge on the likelihood of such a motor. None have said no, but none have confirmed it either. Claiming ignorance with the occasional smile leads one to believe that such an engine is being considered, if not developed. Okay, we’re part-way there.

Were this engine to go into production, it could likely be Audi’s version of the Hemi. Turbocharged Audi 5-cylinder motors, particularly with rare RS2 or Sport quattro componentry, hold as much cred amongst Audi loyalists as the legendary Hemi did for Mopar freaks.

It all comes down to performance and efficiency; if this engine is a great combination of power and fuel efficiency, then we may have something here. Their VR6 isn't bad, but doesn't compare with BMW's I-6. If this I-5 turbo can bridge the gap, all that's left is to stick it in a decently designed coupe.

What is it with all the recent "will something Audi is doing mean destruction for whatever BMW is doing" threads? It's nonsense, why would a single turbo inline 5 mean anything at all for BMW's twin turbo inline 6? They're both inline engines and both have forced induction, other than that why are we even comparing? The next batch of the BMW engines will have direct injection, they have an extra turbo, and an extra cylinder. Do the people that start these threads, in this case one of the people running this site, have no journalistic integrity? Why intentionally try to start arguments by saying things that make no sense?

Do yoy have any idea how powerfull these engines were for there time? actually scratch for there time even now days nobody is even coming close to the kind of power these were and some still are making. Not to mention the sound of the I5 will beat out the sound of a I6 any day. Smaller also means lighter too 1 less cylinder means the I5 only weighs 5/6 of the I6 and takes up less space allowing it to be better balenced. Try some research on these OLD I5's and you will find they are still being used in todays cars. Lamborghini V10 is 2 of these I5's put together. The lambo engine bears more resemblence to the audi engine than to the newer VW 2.5L one.

This engine has been on and off, it looks like the TT RS will have a twin turbo 3.6-liter V6.

I love the 20Valve turbo that Audi had several years back, but I don't really think that a modern version would necessarily be a real threat to BMW. Most consumers are concerned with far more than just the engine in the car. The Twin Turbo six that was in the B5 S4 was a much more capable motor than the inline six that was in teh e46 M3, but BMW still sold a ton of the M3s.
As far as cost of desing goes, VAG already has the 5 cylinder from the rabbit/jetta that could easily be used as an FI engine, so I don't really think that would be a factor. It would be cool to see something like the Quattro Coupe brought back with an FSI Turbo 5. I hope it actually happens.

I'm not sure how it would sell in the U.S. - the Lamans comfort level resides in even numbers and alot of people who buy Aud's are looking for 4 rings, not 5 cylinders (they won't care).

BTW, why not just go with a 6 cylinder turbocharged engine rather than a 5. Please advise if anyone sees the benefit here beyond vanity (doing the 5 rather than the 6)

It is tough to fit a twin turbo 6 in a car transversely. You can do a V6, but then you have a turbo in front of the engine and one behind it, you can do an inline 6 but then your engine is rather wide to fit transversely. Mostly its a packaging issue.

The VW Jetta/Rabbit (American market only) has the 2.5-liter inline 5 cylinder. As this post says, and the article, the twin turbo 5 cylinder 2.5 was rumored as an engine for the Audi TT-RS with 350 hp. Since some articles have said that the engine won't be built, but Audi has never confirmed or denied any reports about the twin turbo 2.5. Like always we will just have to wait and see what happens with this engine.

In response to robJSC post I also question the autospies teenage journalism, Volvo which has made a Turbo 5 for years and is more successful than audi in N. america yet no mention all week. My theory the autospies staff drives audi cars every week you can count on some audi hype.

How is Volvo more sucessful, they don't sell that many more cars and I am sure the average Volvo is cheaper than the average Audi.

Well considering that the Turbo 5 in the S60R is an old Audi engine....... ;)

nothing from audi would ever give BMW cause for concern. Not real competition. MB/Porsche/Aston.. now there is another story!

Porsche and Aston Martin? You've got to be kidding me!

BMW is NOTHING in comparison with Porsche and Aston Martin.

If I end up getting a Carrera Cabriolet or even a year-old AM V8 Roadster (why the hell should I spend $130K on something that's slower than an SL550), I wouldn't think twice about not looking at a 650ci, or even an M6 convertible!

I wouldn't be surprised if Volvo outsold BMW in the USA. Their cars aren't quite "luxurÿ". More "premium".

The BMW will reply with a turbo inline 4 witch won the
European Touring Car Championship, 6 Formula 2 championships and Formula 1.

So BMW will just say while your inline 5 made 600 HP in WRC our inline 4 made 1200 to 1800 HP in F1.
