Mercedes S-Class vs.Lexus LS 460

And in that respect, the all-new Lexus LS460 has a great deal in common with it. The Japanese company’s top-of-the-range model is now in its fourth generation, and can boast eight automotive world firsts. It’s a technological tour de force, and if ever a car could claim to be intelligent, this is it.

Lexus arrived on these shores in 1989, and UK sales have grown from a meagre 671 in 1991 to more than 12,000 a year today. Yet although the launch of the LS is big news, no car in the sector is better, or has more experience, than our current favourite: the eighth-generation Mercedes S-Class. It’s the model Lexus has to beat.

VERDICT

If you’re in the market for the ultimate luxury car, both the Mercedes S-Class and Lexus LS are likely to be on your shortlist. No other models come close to their quality, technology, equipment, comfort and refinement – not even the Bentley Flying Spur or Rolls-Royce Phantom.

But in concentrating so hard on these areas, Lexus has missed a critical trick – to make the occupants feel good. The LS460 is highly impressive and has incredible engineering, but it lacks personality, coming across as clinical and bland. The Merc is every bit as talented and rides better, yet while it doesn’t have the charisma of the best British luxury cars, it’s more engaging to own and live with than the Lexus. As a result, it wins comfortably here.

Hondas and Nissan designed the Lexus dash.

The tail lights are just strange lookin' and the head lights make me tired looking at them and they don't look relaxed like those on the Mercedes.

7 or 8 speed transmission, who can tell the difference in smoothness?

I will agree with the 5-series tailights coming from an Impreza. I apologize if you took my comment about the chaser wrong i was trying to use something you said against MDalle but it didnt come through right. I was saing that you compared the 5 to the chaser and he said the 5 and the LS looked similar i was pointing out that the chaser has no resemblence to either in my opinion and i was stating the toyota crown would be more comparable in roofline and a small resemblence in the rear.

I love articles that point out "technological advances" and don't bring up the A8L. This car, just in the frame alone, has more technological advances than the S-Class or the LS460?!?. When they start using aircraft aluminium as the frame for their cars, maybe the will get my attention. Until then, if there using cheap steel for the frame, then the rest of the car is cheap. Rolex wrappers on Timex bodies do not impress educated buyers.

HERE ARE THE TWO MAIN DIFFERENCES BTW THESE CARS:

LS460 - Sum of its part are better than the whole
S550 - Whole is better than the sum of its parts

Understand why -

4 years of developing the LS460 - Every piece from Headlight details to interior leather buffing to paint polishing are all first class and indeed well done. Indeed they all stand alone amazingly but however, the odd thing is, is that the integration and excecution into one complete package that is the LS460 is sublime and not harmonic. It seems like the engineers paid to much attention to detail for every specific part they assumed it would therefore make the overall car better. design balance suffers to craftsmanship overkill. Some might see this as a superb stand point, some might not enjoy it.

The S550 on the other hand, may not be technologically superior in its specific parts that make up the car compared to the lexus. But overall, the interior and exterior create a sense of ergonomic harmony throughout all. It just blends so well. Everything has been thought out and the fit and finish of the whole package merges and shows its design statement and heritage link. It is here where quality (high in both cars) does show itself more because each aspect complements each other well in this car than compared to the LS460.

So I suggest we stop all the foolish rants. Each of you should be happy and appreciative if you owned either car. They're both amazing machines and they're the epitome of auto design in the present. They both deliver to their owners and dont dissapoint what so ever. I'm sure after buying a LS460 you wouldn't want to buy a s550 and vice versa. They satisfy all needs, just differently.

I have no hard feelings about the merc but what in the world does feel mean??. I mean the lexus is an outstanding achievement. Every thing in it has its own class. The merc no doubt is also great but I would take the lexus over it anytime. I think its only becoz of the "badge" the 'feel' came into the eqution.

As good as the LS is good the S class is the benchmark and has been the benchmark in the full size luxury saloon segment for how many generations now? The LS is good in refinement and technology but the S-class has the same but it includes the prestige that the Merc brand offers.

Now i'm not biased towards Mercedes because i'm a fan of Merc more but it is true.

Here is a scenario, you go to a fancy hotel dinner and you arrive. If you arrive in an LS, people will judge you as a person with money (definately not poor) and owns a nice luxury car. If you arrive in an S-class, people will judget you as a person with wealth and good sense of taste for automobiles. They will recognize a Mercedes over Lexus anyday no matter great Lexus is.

Lexus drivers are soooo cheap. The worst tippers around. Lexus' always go to the back lot (sorry for the door dings). Now that's out of the way-- Lexus simply are not considered prestigous.

I have driven the new Lexus many times and it is not impressive, however, the Merc is. Me and my mates ask each other all the time what is our most desired car and not once has anyone said a Lexus. Frankly, Cadillac is a more impressive car and would be a much wiser choice for someone in this price range.

I can't believe that Will is a real person. I like to rationalize the existence of Will by believing his screen name is used by several people who all have a lot of spare time. "They" are only here to wind up Lexus haters. If "They" were really interested in automobile news or technology:

1. They would be a bit more educated about cars
2. They would refine from replying to Stories with one word and exclamation points. My favorite of these was when BMW released a press kit about the 335i having the power of an V8 and fuel efficiency of a V6. "Will" replied "LEXUS!!!!!!!!", I am sure I used a few less exclamation points, but you get the idea.

I have to admit, I do check Autospies from time to time just to see what this clown posted.

I don't think Lexus' are things to be hated by enthusiasts, merely ignored.

I do have to say Lexus has been great for fans of German cars. BMW's, Audis and Mercedes have definitely improved since Toyota created Lexus in the late 80's.

will, the gs is ugly. it is an unharmonious blend of loads of different design that doesn't match. they give it a luxury saloon type middle and then a really short, sporty bootlid, which gives it a very chunky c pillar and makes it look really fat.

I test drove the S550 recently and it’s hard to argue that it wears the crown of the best luxury car in the world.

Among a host of standouts, the ride/handling balance was impeccable. Incredible agility for such a large car. The ride was addicting for me, and I could have driven it all day….all night.

The exterior design of the S is attractive, elegant with an incredible road presence. It is a good looking car regardless of what badge it wears.

I wasn’t keen on the quality of leather interior that they used…and the price+options will give you heartburn. Then there’s also the issue of Benz reliability.

I’ve never driven the LS460, and just looking at the pictures I probably never will.

That may be what all of you think, but trust me, there are many more people who do not feel that way. A person arriving at a fancy hotel in a Lexus is seen as sensible and humble, and a wise car buyer. Arrive in a Mercedes, and you're a snob, and vanity queen.

That's what I think and that's what many people think as well. However lots think the way you do too so it's 50/50. I own Mercs but I'm not a snob and sure as hell no "vanity QUEEN". Lexus are respectable cars but not as recognized as Mercedes that's what i'm trying to say. Lexus fans can hate on me as much as they want but I have yet seen a LS at the most lavish hotels in my city. All i've seen are S, 7, A8s, and even Jaguars XJ. HOWEVER, I hope the LS will show up one day because the new one has lots to offer. The exterior is subjective though, but the features are up to par.

i'm sorry but well duh it varies from region to region! i see like ten new s classes a day, and about 10 porsches! and of course about 30 bmw 3 series....
i mean really it's barely an occasion now if i see a bentley or even a maybach...i honestly think i see more mercs than fords in a day...
and the LS will NEVER be used for hotel duty. know why? no diesel or small engine, and poor resale. it's killing sales over here. chauffeur companies all use a diesel.

Here's my thoughts on it...

MB looks good, it really does. In many ways though, it is just a refined Maybach. Look closely at the Maybach, and then look at the S class, and you'll see the interior is the same layout. On the exterior, they just added fender flares.

On the other hand, the LS looks like a restyled 7 series on the exterior.

Here are the facts though, and I know this as I have worked for both MB and Lexus...

MB is plagued with problems, so after the honeymoon phase wears off, you're not happy with the car, and that's the bottom line. Again I know this, because I dealt with it on a daily basis, after consumers are over the whole 'new car' thing, the unsatisfaction sets in.

Lexus lives beyond the honeymoon phase, and that's where they excel. The car is reliable, and does not get rickety after owning it for years. Furthermore, the interior design, easy or controls, and sensory immersion are far superior to any manufacturer.

The S class does look more edgy, but that will wear off, and then...

then you'll go buy a Lexus.

In addition to opinions, the numbers don't lie...
Lexus is the #1 luxury manufacturer in the US, and there is a reason for that. Check the numbers.

I have come up with the self-park feature's fatal flaw.

It's completely, 100% redundant.

There's the fancy little computer screen, and you press the little arrows for an annoyingly complex forty-five seconds until the car is safely parked in between the other two.

If you're using push-button arrows, WHY DON'T YOU JUST USE THE STEERING WHEEL???

There's no convenience gained at all! None! Zero!

I'm sure Lexus spent hundreds of millions developing (or buying the rights of) this system, and I pity them! They achieved nothing!

I have worked for both companies! They are both in San Diego, and they are both off the 163hwy. The companies are owned by UAG, as well as the BMW, Jaguar, Acura, and Toyota dealerships, all on the same road. The CEO of UAG is Roger Penske, the Western Div Officer is George Brochek. In the MB store is one of Penske's indy cars... What other inside information do you need?

We can sit here and blog all day long, and argue who is right and whatnot, but people vote with their wallets, so let the numbers do the talking, and the numbers favor Lexus. So either Lexus is part of the biggest automotive act of conspiracy and deceit, or they are in fact that good! And since I have more faith in the American public, in that they could not be lied to for 16 years in a row without discovering the truth, I'm going to have to say Lexus is that good! Putting aside the bland, uninspiring looks of the LS460….which to me is like the kiss of death in the fashion conscious world of high-end luxury cars, you do have to respect the fact that it will probably be an extremely reliable car.

If you want to sacrifice style and sportiness for dependability then by all means the LS460 is the car.
