Ford CEO Sheds More Light on Toyota Visit

At a private dinner on Wednesday, Ford CEO Alan Mulally told journalists that the recent visit he and Mark Fields made to Toyota's headquarters was born out of a desire to understand more about the Japanese automaker's manufacturing and product development processes, which Mulally holds in very high esteem.

He went so far as to refer to Toyota as "the finest machine in the world, the finest production system in the world," adding that "we (Mulally and Fields) went to study with the master." The Toyota visit also satisfies at least part of a personal objective he set for himself when he assumed the top spot at Ford, which was to meet with the other manufacturers in short order.

It seems like many people on this website own Toyota.

Why do any of you actually care so much? None of this has any relevance to you. You guys aren't even Toyota fans- you're Lexus fans. I've never heard of a Toyota fan, but that would be a severely misguided person.

I'm excited because I would love to buy American, if only American produced the high quality cars I normally get from Toyota.

In addition to my '04 BMW 330Ci, I have a '05 Toyota Sienna and a '06 Toyota RAV4; it would be a Ford Aerostar and Ford Escape if both of those models had the durability and performance of their Toyota counterparts. You see, as an American, I actually WANT to buy American, but I'm not going to pay good money for a bad car either.

Maybe in 8 years, when it comes time to get a new car, Ford would be producing Toyota level cars and I'll be in line for one.
