Toyota Grabs Third Place in U.S. Auto Market

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. bumped DaimlerChrysler to grab third place in the U.S. auto market in 2006, while Ford Motor Co. saw its total sales slip under the 3 million unit mark.

U.S. auto sales dropped 2.6 percent in 2006 to just under 16.6 million units, according to data released today. General Motors remained the top automaker in the U.S. market, followed by Ford Motor. But both automakers saw their sales drop last year by at least 8.0 percent compared with 2005.

In an industry that battles fiercely over small changes in market share, 2006 was a year of big swings.

Good for Toyota. I just bought my first Toyota product (Lexus IS) and I love it!
Now, the two companies I love are Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.

Car manufactures, this has happened because Totota makes reliable cars that stay on the freeways and drivers wave as they're driving by the Ford, GM and Dodge service centers.

Time to get up off your back sides and begin building reliable automobiles.

I'm a bit surprised at your comment. Toyota has gained the perception (and rightfully so) of building reliable cars. But no one can say that Detroit hasn't made HUGE strides in quality..in some cases matching or exceeding Toyota in areas. But the public perception will take time to change and too many people are stuck in the 70's and 80's when American cars simply were horrible.

I already have a BMW 745i (2004), and I like everything but the dreadful electronics - especially the times the NAV freezes.....The car is a blast to drive though!

I saw the new S8 a few weeks ago. I was blown away.

It looks "okay" in pictures, like it's not aggressive enough.

Boy, was I wrong. It's beautiful, and the bodykit adds exactly the right touch of aggression and class to an already timeless vehicle. I commend them for creating the perfect sub-$100,000 luxury sedan.

well, i NEVER get bored driving my fwd toyota in the winter, while all the "exciting" euro sporty rwd sedans are cowering thru curves.

and as for audi quattros, they're TOO UNRELIABLE for our harsh environment.
