DETROIT AUTO SHOW: 2008 Cadillac CTS

We gave the original Cadillac CTS some slack after its debut at the Detroit auto show in 2002. Driving it didn't reveal it as much of a sport sedan and the interior was a disaster, but its exterior was the most original design to come out of Detroit in years. It actually looked like Cadillac was trying again.

With the second-generation 2008 Cadillac CTS debuting at this year's Detroit auto show, GM is aiming to compete in the entry-level sport sedan segment instead of merely existing in it. The midsize sedan has not only been cleaned up and smoothed out, GM added some real power under the hood and the kind of interior the Caddy should have had in the first place.

Yeah. This is going to be a pretty big hit. Think this CTS will win over a lot of traditional import lux buyers the first one failed at. Seems the only little niggle not to be get fixed is the foot park brake. I would kinda rather have the foot brake, but am in the minority and think those of us that like the extra center console space allowed by going with a foot brake are less annoyed when we can only have a hand brake.

If anyone has seen the new interior of the SRX, then the same quality seems to be reflected in the new CTS. I feel Cadillac has finally arrived with the new CTS. Not that I didn't like the old CTS, but the new one is so much more refined and really desirable. Std engine options are so vast, and AWD is also offered. We could be looking at another car of the year from GM if this is pulled off right. Lots of stiff competion now.

Great looking car. I wish it was more like what Lutz showed 60 minutes. The taillight treatment is toned down and the headlights have gotten wider. Overall a crisp look. More muscular looking than current CTS.

Wow! I wish I would have seen this before ordering my new 3 (which is being built this Thursday) :D Never considered Cadillac before, but this is an amazing effort!

How many colors do they have going on in that interior?

It's a good looking car, I just can't figure out why it overlaps so much with an STS. This new model looks even closer to the STS than the outgoing generation.

Soo awesome. GM's next car of the year. Look at that interior, can you belive that we are looking at a GM car. The v series will blow the competition out of the water. More power than an is-f too. Can't get over the interior. Its confirmed my next car will be the CTS-V. if Gm brings more cars like this Toyota won't be #1

What a night and day improvement.
But these pictures raise a few questions:
Does the sunroof really stretch the length of almost the entire cabin?
Is that a pop-up nav screen that continues to display information when it’s down?
Why does it still use a key in the steering column to start the car?
Did GM fire all of their previous interior designers?
If somebody tells a joke in the forest and nobody laughs, is it a joke?

I just finished saying this in another thread, but apparently this one is getting more attention. As I said before, this is great but I am truly concerned for how this car's design will age over time. Remember when the last CTS came out? It was getting just as much praise for its cutting-edge design as this new one is. Yet people lost interest in its design fairly quickly. As nice as this is, I hope it does not suffer the same fate.

I posted there and will post here. Think you are miss informed if you thought the interest in the previous CTS design faded over time. Sales increased year over year for the previous CTS until the last couple years. That is quite rare in this category. So, if anything, interest in the design actually increased! Or atleast was very successful at attracting new buys as more and more peeps saw it.

actually you would be wrong, the cadillac cts's best years were not its first year the car actually increased sales through the model cycle tapering right at the end, so "fact" would prove that people didnt get tired of the desighn quickly, the tapering off though goes with "any" car line towards the end of its cycle, look at the g35, and others. so despite the long paragraph next time try to induce some fact and a little less fiction....dont believe me research it

Cadillac's strategy vs. BMW has always been twofold with the CTS: Offer a car larger than the 3 for comparable money, or a car close to the 5 for a lot less. Depending on the customer, you can conquest both 5 and 3 series buyers with the CTS.

The only thing I wonder is where this awesome new CTS leaves the STS (a fantastic but "sales-proof" car). More room, more luxury and enhanced technology makes thr 08 CTS a competitor to the Cadillac STS. Could it be on the way out?
