The all-new 2008 IS-F high-performance luxury sedan will deliver more than 400 horsepower from a 5.0-liter V8 engine when it goes into production. The LF-A supercar concept is equipped with a V10 engine that produces more than 500 horsepower. Together, the two exciting new cars make a dramatic statement of Lexus performance.

IS-F Performance Sedan

Much of the development of the new IS-F took place at Fuji Speedway and the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan. The IS-F is based on the proven rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS, which is equipped with a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension. As well as the IS performs, Lexus engineers demanded much more of the all-new IS-F. The result is a performance tuned 5.0-liter V8 engine, topped with specially engineered heads fed by a two-stage intake system, that produces 400-plus horsepower and more than 350 ft.-lbs. of torque. The all-new IS-F is equipped with engine-oil and transmission-fluid coolers for high-speed performance and a cylinder head-scavenging oil pump for high g-force driving.

The IS-F engine is mated to the world's first eight-speed direct sport-shift transmission. A new torque-converter lock-up control was developed that allows for a direct, crisp gear change through the constant lock-up of the torque converter in second through eighth gears. In Drive mode, the IS-F transmission performs with great smoothness, and the torque converter allows for great launch ability for fast standing-start acceleration that will register a zero-to-60 time in less than 4.9 seconds.

This unique transmission also features an advanced Manual mode. A pair of paddles located within a fingertip's reach behind the steering wheel enables the driver to make ultra-fast up-shift gear changes within a tenth of a second. Downshifts are accompanied by automated and incredibly precise throttle blips to match engine RPM to vehicle speed.

The impressive acceleration achieved by the IS-F requires it be equipped with heavy-duty Brembo brakes designed to the specifications of the Lexus engineering team. Huge, 14.2-inch cross-drilled front discs are gripped by rigid, powerful six-piston aluminum calipers, while 13.6-inch rear cross-drilled discs feature two-piston calipers. High-friction brake pads are equipped on all four wheels. The brakes are finished with the Lexus name displayed on the calipers, a first for a Lexus production vehicle.

The IS-F features custom-designed 19-inch forged alloy wheels as standard. The wheels were built to Lexus specifications by BBS and are surrounded by high-performance sport tires.

The attention to performance also extends to a modified suspension that lowers the entire car by more than a half-inch when compared to the base IS, and one full inch when compared to IS models equipped with 18-inch wheels. This specially modified suspension allows for an exciting and energetic drive, whether on a race track or the streets.

The IS-F features an all-new three-mode version of Lexus' Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. In addition to the Normal mode, the new VDIM features a Sport mode that allows the driver to push the car even further before its braking-, throttle- and steering-control systems kick in. The third VDIM system mode is Off, which allows the driver to push the IS-F to its ultimate level of handling performance.

The attention to performance is complemented by modified styling cues that differentiate the IS-F from the standard IS. Lexus engineers provided the IS-F with a dual-exhaust system and quad-tail pipes, wider front fenders, and a larger grille and rear spoiler. Both the hood and lower intake were enlarged to accommodate and cool the V8 engine.

Like the exterior, the interior of the IS-F receives unique styling with aluminized composite trim and special surface treatments. The instrument panel includes an oil-temperature gauge and shift indicator-lights, while the "F" logo is showcased on the steering wheel and rear-center console.

In addition to the usual Lexus standards of comfort and convenience, the interior of the IS-F features specially shaped and trimmed seats, which hold the driver comfortably and securely in place. The special sport seats are available in black or a unique high-contrast white and black trim.

"The intent of creating the IS-F was not to be a competitor to other performance-sport sedans," said Carter. "Rather, the goal was to create a true performance sedan in a uniquely Lexus way-one that is totally authentic with a unique interpretation of raw driving thrill at all speeds and provides a whole new definition of 'usable power.'"

The IS-F will arrive at Lexus dealerships in early 2008

and it'll stay in the rearview as people try to keep from having to look at it. Sorry but that is ugly, and I actually liked the regular IS (and I say that as a BMW fan). They messed this one up. The M3, RS4, C63, etc. all look better and will offer (at worst) similar performance. That bodykit looks like something out of JC Whitney. I can't believe they screwed up a decent looking car that badly.

This IS-F concept looks like Lexus was trying to be outwardly aggressive...instead of their usual understated, refined, polished trend. The IS-F is a good try at the luxury sport sedan mark, but they should have looked at Cadillac's CTS-V or M-B C55 for more inspiration.

The current IS350 is an excellent looking vehicle with a great powerplant. There was no need to include oversized vents, etc to essentuate the small Lexus with big ability. I'm sure most of us assumed the IS-F was going to have the larger hood bump (for a larger engine), verticle-configged tailpipes, and a lower ride height. But we didn't expect an outwardly agressive Lexus at all.

The front half of the car looks "style heavy" if i can say that, front bumper looks like big smile with a swollen lip, interior is yawn worthy, and the next CTS-V will beat it. I really wan to like the side skirts because the part behind the wheel is really cool but they are too flashy and over done. Not to mention they don't meet the fender well at the top. Caddy has my dollar.

you're an idiot renlex...the IS350 cannot touch the E46 M3. Most tests of the IS350 have yielded sprints in the mid to low 5's (on a good day). The E46 M3 can consistently get to 60 in under 5 seconds.

Also, I do think that this will get to 60 in around 4.5 or 4.6 seconds. Maybe a bit quicker if the 8 speed gearbox is set up correctly, it isn't for the LS 460.

But the styling and the regular interior are big downers. It just looks very akward and long in these shots.

Who cares what the design looks like? It will sell, and be sold out. The bottomline will be how this car does against the new M3 in the track/performance numbers. If it is at least equal to or better than the M3 at a competitive price (15% cheaper than M3), it would have succeeded.

Maybe Lexus overdid it a little with the looks; I love the way the IS 250 and IS 350 look--this car seems like its on steroids. But of course we have yet to find out how it performs. I think it looks good. The stacked quad exhaust is unique and fits well with the rear fascia. Exterior styling is very aggressive (which I like) and the 8 speed gearbox should be interesting.

As for performance, reading Lexus' website, they estimate 400 hp from a 5 liter V8, producing 0-60 of "under 4.9 sec". I hope these are conservative figures, as i assume they are...seeing as the 415hp RS4 with AWD is capable of 4.3-4.4 sec in the 0-60 run. To me, the IS-F is competitive in this market, but I think saying that this car "destroys" everything in its class is a VERY generous statement.

I've been reading AutoSpies for literally years now. What never ceases to amaze me is how much interest the Lexus threads seem to get. Scratch "interest," the word I was looking for was "hate." Why is there so much hate? There has to be a reason. Clearly Lexus does have a very good marketing division. They definitely put their ads in the right places here on this site.

I for one like the styling. It's a matter of personal taste. I find the extra-large side vents to be very appealing from an aggressive performance stance. In this class of cars, aggressiveness is not something to shy away from. Yes this car is extremely aggressive, and that's what should attract the performance crowd to it. Yes it's aggressive, it's suppossed to be! If it weren't it'd be just another boring Lexus! This does not look like another boring Lexus.

0-60 in 4.9 seconds? With a normal IS350 besting 0-60s at 4.9 seconds, my guess is that this will do it much more quickly than that. Especially considering this thing will be pulling 400+ hp (out of a massive 5L V8 though? I bet it will be way more than 400).

For me, Lexus automobiles have always been a bit on the soft side, and have never even considered one. I can willingly say that this car has genuinely caught my attention. The lack of a manual is a true bummer, but I've done some reading on this new 8-Speed tranny from Lexus. It upshifts just under a tenth of a second, and downshifts like a DSG system. That's pretty amazing. Add to that that extra 8th gear, I just might could look past the lack of a traditional manual.

I dont know why I continue to bother with this inane argument, but I just cant believe how ridiculous you are being. My original point was in response to someone making the ridiculous comment that insinuates the biggest problem with Lexus is the Lexus fans on Autospies. So I pointed out how much abuse Lexus and its fans take from posters on this site.

Lexus should have put wider fenders on this IS, than to differentiate it from the more common IS with the sides behind the front wheels. If the hood represents the head of the car, then this hood makes it look like a whale. The common IS is more beautiful than this, I think they ruined the design.

best i can analyze, this is a sort of SUBDUED "electric blue."

perfectly matching the character of the car. joltingly HOT performance, but with RELATIVELY restrained body mods.

nothing bad about blue in itself. i bought a new car on new year's eve a few years back, without knowing the color until i picked it up a few days later. (had to make the buy on 12/31 to take advantage of accumulated credits).

turned out it was a deep metallic blue. one of, if not THE BEST color offered in the line! (for that model. and it STILL looks good.)

I agree with Will - this car will sell. It will be less $$ than the RS4 and the M3 and it ain't boring to look at. The new M3 will be boring - just a two door 335 with quad pipes and fender flares - yawn. Oh and I forgot the M badge.

quality - audi has that in spades
value - only matters in the lower end market ie for a toyota, not a lexus.

and stop aiming this car at the M3! it has an autobox! it can't rival the M3! RS4? so far the IS appears to be less powerful, heavier, and not as goood a handler! and i know no one knows what it handles like, but this is still a lexus, a car not famed for its handling. look how long it took audi to make their cars handle decently!
and please...stop saying this will "definitely" keep up with the audi! the lexus spokesperson, surely the person most eager to promote the car, has not said "this car will outhandle", "this car will be faster" or even "this car will be more powerful". he has said it is a car with lexus-like attributes. you know what that means to me? BAD HANDLING.

I never knew there are so much prick and A$$hole up here hating Lexus so much. Yeah I know M3 and RS4 has great performance, but I know this Lexus IS-F will do really good as well. I don't know how good this Lexus IS-F will do yet on the track and performance wise.

But please stop the trash talking about this vechicle, remember when the IS350 first came out it smoke the 330i from 0-60. After that BMW bring out the 335i to rival the IS350 performance.

Under the hood is a 5 liter with a V8 engine with over 400+ hp. This car is going to gave the RS4 and new M3 a run for their money for sure. But will it be good enough to beat both the RS4 and M3? well we have to wait for the test result. Oh..by the way.. I think the RS4 is a much better looking than the M3.

So, I was browsing youtube.com, and across the top was a banner advertising their "groups". After checking it out, I had an idea. "Hey, why don't we have an Autospies group?" We would all join it, and post Top Gear videos, Autoshow videos, and the tons of auto related videos that aren't considered "news". We could all post videos, and also chat. It would drastically add to Autospies's video collection, and enlargen our Autospies community. What do you think?

To start things off….. LF-A is a major improvement. If this vehicle is the future of Lexus design, only good things will come from them.

All this senseless hate on the IS-F, only shows that there are few true auto enthusiasts on autopsies.com. I myself am into every car scene (hot rods, muscle cars, low-riders, imports, etc.) and find it ridiculous to fight over such a landmark vehicle. Do you anybody knows how much of an impact the IS-F will make on the future Lexus models. We should all congratulate Lexus on their effort to be taken seriously in the luxury segment. By looking at the IS-F; Lexus does have a long (a very long) way to go.

P.S. The IS-F will be sought after, expect the GS-F to follow soon with the V10….

Lexus did a good job having two very distinct visual varitions compared to the regular IS. The stacked dual exhusts from the front, and the vents from the side.

A 5.0litre V8 is a fantastic engine size and at 400hp this will be a beast. However, if Lexus really wants to get driver enthusists to buy off on their new sport class, they need to have a manaul transmission offering. Look at the new M5 for example, their SMG was faster and better overall, but they still had to come out with a manual to keep their purists happy.

I work for Lexus, and yet would not say I'm 100% convinced about all their products. I do wonder if electric blue in the show car is the problem here, as this colour would look awful on almost any car, M3, RS4, Ferrari, whatever. I think that the IS-F would look much better in Black or Silver or Granite, and these are the colours most people will buy.

In response to all the lovers and haters - Lexus creates this controversy because they are a wildly successful Japanese upstart in a German establishment. The company has deep pockets and amazing quality control, yet in the past has delivered very bland products that do not appeal to enthusiasts. This appears to be changing, and there will always be people who align themselves with European brands and feel slightly threatened by this, even though there's really no need.

Remember, an M3 or RS4 is built with European roads and driving preferences in mind, where a Lexus will always be built for Americans. There is a very different attitude to cars on each continent, which is why a BMW will always leave a Lexus for dead on a racetrack, and a Lexus will always be a nicer place to cruise on a freeway.

I will NEVER understand why Lexus chooses the cheapest 100% Made in Japan designs.The only two Japanese cars that i like are Nissan 350Z and the Infinity FX35.Japanese cars may be reliable but they use cheap designs and what is worse they chose the cheapest plastics and materials in most models.
