Starting the year off right in Detroit can really help a company gain momentum, increase moral with their employees and build better public perception.

So being able to say you had the best vehicle at the show means a tremendous amount to everyone involved.

But there can only be ONE winner as the best in show.

It was a HARD decision...SO hard, that this year I actually changed my mind at the last minute.

How last minute?

Yesterday we shot some video and I picked the LF-AF.

When I woke up today, I decided I had to change my mind and this choice inched out a win over the LF-AF.

So by the narrowest of margins over the Lexus LF-AF, AutoSpies.com awards the 2007 Detroit Auto Show 'Best in Show' award to the Toyota FT-HS concept.

Front, hood, windshield and doors look good to me. Back looks a little too Kit Car. At $35K there will be many on the streets. 350Z and G35 will have to step it up.

( I don't think anybody saw this on the ISF article, so I'm going to copy it here again so everybody could see)

OK, this is a bit off-topic, but since this article is "on fire" I guess this is a good place to post:

So, I was browsing youtube.com, and across the top was a banner advertising their "groups". After checking it out, I had an idea. "Hey, why don't we have an Autospies group?" We would all join it, and post Top Gear videos, Autoshow videos, and the tons of auto related videos that aren't considered "news". We could all post videos, and also chat. It would drastically add to Autospies's video collection, and enlargen our Autospies community. What do you think?

(001, if people are supportive of the idea, do I have your approval? I'll try to make it as official as possible, (or you could do it) .)

So what do ya think?

Not surprised by the choice with this being Autospies and all the Toyota adds and toyota fan boys. I personally woulda picked the CTS on looks alone. The Volt as the best over all concept as it was for sure the most significant from a looks+tech perspective. I think the for Interceptor was the best looking non-production concept. Both these Toyota picks are cars that are WAY to busy looking. Nothing comes together right on either of them. The LF-AF kinda has some Supra cues, but then it is all ruined by harsh rice looking ducts hear and there. Particularly the front ducts that are sharp looking while the rest of the car is more curvacious. The FT-HS atleast has a more consitent theme to the design, but it is over done BIG TIME. WAY too many design cue lines and none of them working well together. If I were a Star Wars freak and wanted the most Storm Trooper looking car, MAYBE I would like the FT-HS then??

I agree, this seems a little biased. How many places on this site do you see Toyota / Lexus ads?

Just look at those pictures alone with the "See Lexus at the Auto Show", that definitely looks like it's sponsored to me.

The LF-AF is an interesting concept car, but I wouldn't say it's the "best of the show" I think that goes to the Chevy Volt, especally due to the technology they've incorporated into it. The LF-AF just doesn't do anything to me to say "wow, that is a striking sports car". The design and flow just doesn't work. It has angles where it shouldn't and as many said, it just seems overdone.

excuse me, but please remember this car is completely made up.
look, i invented a concept. does 0-60 in 3.4 seconds from a 3 litre quad turbo-diesel hybrid and it does 30 mpg. i think this deserves autospies CoTDAS more.
not being rude to toyota or anything, i quite like the looks and the overall idea of the car, but it isn't real. sorry. i think the LF-A should have one, it's much closer to reality (as in it uses a real engine and gearbox). or actually, the chevvy volt. technology, looks, and it is something good to come out of gm, which is an acheivement.
however, if at the next autoshow, and toyota actually announce something (or hint very strongly) and it becomes more real, feel free to give it the win. affordable sports is good for everyone.

I like it, a lot. Very dramatic.

But my problem with it is this: where's the Supra-ness? They obviously wouldn't call it the "FT-HS" alphabet soup, because that sounds like a video game cheat code. If they want to bring the soul of the Supra back, the main focus is that it has to look like one. I don't care if it has a 1.0 liter two-cylinder 40hp engine. If it looks like a Supra, then that's half of the equation. The other half: it has to drive like one. Hybrid or not, it better be good. Toyota has to take risks to stay in the limelight; hopefully, this will be one of them. I can see the comparison now: HOT! Toyota Supra VS. Nissan GT-R VS. Corvette Z-06 Blue Devil, and then there would be a second comparison, a companion of sorts: AUDI R8 V10 VS. LEXUS LF-A VS. PORSCHE 911 TURBO.

Face it, toyota is the only real automaker that has made strides to make different, interesting, and technologically advanced cars. This car although the the hottest looking thing out will grow on you. I remember when I first saw the Enzo I thought it looked like shit, but it grew on me. This is a concept however, and well change. The LF-A is an awesome looking car I think, Check these photos of it.

I started liking it form those pics, the ones on this site dont do it justice. And On a previous comment, I think Toyota will step up and start taking risks as time goes on. Unlike American Automakers, like GM, toyota is focuses on quality of their build, but as a ever faster growing auto company they will be recognized. If GM didnt own so many other automakers, Im sure Toyota's 3 brands together would beat any 3 of GM's brands...but thats just a totally different topic.

I hope the LF-A is built.

There was a time when autospies was a great outlet for the latest automotive news. Every week they came out with great newsletters and spy pictures about what was happening in the entire automotive industry.

Now, they are just looking for money. I dont't blame them because thats the reality of capitalism. (come up with a good idea and you should benefit from it)

To honestly judge this crap as the show stealer, you have to be kidding me!

If based on the look alone, I will pick the revised LF-A.

Combined with advanced techniques (battery+ supercapacitor), FT-HS is the right pick.

I completly agree with u.The best of the show award should have gone to FT-HS after being revoloved between Toyota and it's subsidiary Lexus.
They have done so hard and useful work.Everybody have to admit it.

Imagine 400+BHP, 0-60 in under 4 seconds and USD 35K.This thing could be a Chineese car and i would still buy it.

It sooooooo goood.

In my honest opinion LF-AF + IS-F + FT-HS >>> Rest of the models on the show.

Thats my point. imagine. it isn't going to happen. 300hp, 0-60 in 5.0-5.5 seconds, and 40000 dollars (or whatever is closest to a 350Z). Not because toyota can't engineer it right, but because of emissions standards (fairly easy with a hybrid), recycling standards (there is a law on that in the EU), MPG (still important even on a sports car), then there's safety (add about 10 airbags knowing toyota, then all the electronics, then the crash absorbing stuff), then take away some of the lightweight materials, add some heavy interior features (ie electric seats and air con and that heavy foldable roof), and TA-DA, you have a heavier, slower, and more expensive car.
But I don't see how special it is...a mercedes slk does all that for a higher price. (although i still don't want one).
this is a cool concept, but it isn't reality.

great pick, 001!

on the technical aspects, even the haters can not question this choice.

i initially had reservations over ONLY ONE initial photo of this. a low angle profile shot, which made the nose seem too tall and blunt.
but knowing that from STANDING HEIGHT, this would NOT look as awkward as in that shot, i now have NO complaints at all about the design.

anyone else noticed that the intake, seen head on, is a NACA duct?

even toyota's STYLISTS are engineers too!

Toyota's stylists are not engineers. like most designers, specific styling motifs or features are appropriated from existing sources, usually used as creative inspiration.

And just in case anyone forgot, this car is a concept in every sense of the word. Too bad JUGNU gets off on made-up speculation and the warped sense of reality in his biased fan-boy dream world in which he resides.

who's the one showing off his stupidity?

there's no law saying a stylist cannot ALSO have had engineering courses. MANY professionals have cross training in multiple disciplines. i personally know a psychologist who was formerly an engineer. and is ALSO an artist.

if you consider there are MANY people skilled in "engineering" without being formally degreed, and likewise, many aesthetically skilled folks with NO formal art training, there are MANY 'stylists' who have OTHER skills as well.

given the many models from Prius to LS460 that have been wind tunnel tested (and LEAD their classes in slipperyness), i would doubt that ANY toyota product doesn't have aero ENGINEERING, AS WELL AS designer/stylist inputs, before final design sign offs.

Anyone remember the Ford GT-90 car, the white paint kinda makes me think this car is a better version of that car, just because of the bold and abrupt lines and cuts.
