Who Will Be Next?:State of Michigan Gives Ford $300 Million to Stay
The state Michigan has agreed to give Ford Motor $300m to keep open six of its factories in the state.

The move, which amounts to subsidies of about $23,000 per worker, could help safeguard 13,000 jobs in the state.

In return, Ford has vowed to invest $866m to upgrade the ancient equipment in the plants.

The firm had threatened to go to other neighbouring states, such as Minnesota and Indiana, which had also been prepared to offer subsidies.

Ford's investment will pay for the retooling of its Wayne assembly plant to produce the new 2008 Ford Focus small car and a $200m investment to produce Ford F150 trucks on the old River Rouge site.

I understand why it was done. My area lost out to the Benz plant that was built in Alabama instead, and incentives were offered in that situation. This is just a sign of the times for American manufacturing jobs.

I do and almost three quarters of the people of Metro Detroit. Half of my business is based on autoworkers. When they leave, there goes half of my income. Just to let you know, Detroit has the highest level of unemployment now, and we need people to live here for the best of our economy.

It's better than Georgia gave Kia $400M of taxpayer money to build its first US plant there, but since they only employ 2,500 employees that's $160,000 per employee. That's to build a car with virtually no American parts content, so the money made by the plant American taxpayers paid for all gets funneled out of the country. Nice.

I know Ford keeps jobs locally and supports the local economy and of course it would be sad if Ford left that area, but I have to agree with or at least in spirit mynecksonfire. Every American car company has been aware of serious problems with quality since at least 1980 and has done only the minimum to be competitive. For those who cannot add very well, that is 27 years to maintain their positions in the market.
The State of Michigan was wrong for what they did. This is typical for American automakers and that is put a band-aid on the problem and our stock prices will level off for a little while until the next crisis. They should be allowed to fall on their faces.
