BMW X6 Likely to be Built In South Carolina

Since BMW hasn't even released a concept of their Merc R-class fighter, the X6, it struck us as odd that they would already be looking into production capacity. According to Automotive News, they're doing just that and looking to utilize their assembly lines in South Carolina to build approximately 40,000 of the yet-to-be-shown crossover.

The plant in Spartanburg, S.C. currently has the ability to produce both the X5 SUV (sorry, SAV) and the Z4 roadster, but when BMW consolidated the two lines last year, they had every intention of using the plant to produce another Ultimate Driving Machine.

The BMW X6 shouldn't even be likely to go into productioin.

Oh and- it's not going to be an R-Class fighter. In the twisted world of upcoming BMW products, the V7 is the R fighter; the X6 is supposed to be an "SAV/coupe" thing.

F5 will fight the R-class. Sort of, since F5 will be a different car - much more sporty & dynamic looking & performing.

And yes, X6 (E71) will definitely be built in Spartanburg plant (since it is based on E70 X5 platform).

Coming in early 2008.

That is a good question and i'd like to know the answer as well. People seem to be going for these unique, futuristic designs of late(CLS). It is also much better than the weird S-Class convertible.

Do you WANT BMW to go into all these horrible, stupid, superfluous, money-draining niché markets? I love the brand, but if they have about eight new SAV variants in the next few years, it spells d-o-o-m for them.

Speaking of BMW, I just returned the E70 demo BMW let me use over the weekend. It is a great car. My order is in, and mine should arrive in late April!!!!

I'm excited for the X6. It will be an interesting addition to the BMW lineup.

From what my dealer sais, it will NOT be anything like the R-Class (via minivan appearance) and should blow away any soccer-mom-friendly stigma, although that's who it will likely target.

X6 is a bad idea. The only good idea for a future BMW is the V7/5 and the V3. I think they should also just give the US the 1-Series Hatch, and still create the 3dr version but stuff doing things like a saloon, estate and all of that X1 rubbish.
