Spy Shots: Volkswagen Golf Estate

It seems like Volkswagen is preparing itself to compete with Ford’s most popular European car the Mondeo. Here are some shots of what AutoBild is saying will be Golf variant that will compete against the Ford Mondeo wagon. When launched, the Golf Estate wagon will come in FSI and TDI engine variants. Volkswagen is also hinting fully concealable rear seats and a one-push button operated rear door. Volkswagen is also keeping the roof-line a bit sporty so the car isn’t confused for a Van or seem like it will compete with the S-MAX or Galaxy. More info as it comes.

The Volkswagen Golf is the most popular car in Europe. This looks nice, this will be the Jetta Variant (Wagon) here in the states. It should have plenty of room to haul stuff.

VW has not made a profit in the USA since 2002 and isn't projected to do so until 2009. Is the Jetta wagon coming to the States? I've read about the VW minivan to be built by Chrysler (same platform as Voyager) and the Tiguan but not the wagon...just curious.

Yes, it is true. A weak image hurts sales and the dollar to euro exchange rate hurts the bottom line. Loses for 2006 were down 11% when compared to 2005, but still fairly large. I am sure this will come here, but maybe under the new American VWs policy this won't come as the Tiguan cute ute is likely to be more popular (even if it doesn't offer more space, it is a cute ute and this are more popular than wagons here)

BTW, I am sure that wagons will be the new rage in about five years after crossovers become lame. First it was the wagon for more practicality compared to the sedan (makes perfect sense) Then the minivan (also makes sense) then the gas guzzler SUV (with the EPA not putting a gas guzzler tax on it) then the crossover now, I am sure wagons will make a comeback soon.

Lexus, Infiniti and Acura don't have, and haven't ever had, a wagon model.

Is still don't get why people get a SUV over a wagen, i mean for the same money as a Q7 3.0 TDI you can get a S4 avant.

An SUV is a station wagon ... for someone trying to compensate for inadequacy in other areas :)
The Golf is the best selling car ever.
Europe & England have Golf and Jetta/Bora wagons, but the Golf wagon has never made it over here.
Since Americans are afraid of cars without trunks the Golf barely sells there. Canadian sales of Golfs are much higher (on a per-capita basis) but still low compared to Europe, Asia, Australia, etc.

I don't think this will make it across the pond.
The 5-door GTI isn't even for sale in the US yet (but is most elsewhere in the world).
