Volvo May Expand Further Into Wagons and Crossovers

With the early 2009 arrival of the XC60 crossover, Volvo will have five wagons or crossovers. It may not stop there.

Volvo is examining moving both upscale and downmarket from the existing lineup of the V50, V70, XC70, XC90 and XC60, executives said in interviews last week at the Detroit auto show.

"Volvo is well-known for its versatility," said Steven Armstrong, Volvo Car Corp. COO. "We were producing crossovers before the term was even invented. There are still plenty of opportuninites to fill in gaps with new things."

Volvo created a conceptual luxury wagon, called the Versatility Concept Car, for the 2003 Geneva auto show. It likely would be called V90 if it were produced.

Volvo is just expanding on an idea that has work for them as well as BMW with the X3/X5 and Lexus with the RX. Lexus like Volvo sell a health percentage of their line up in these small SUV/crossover/SAV/whatever they call them models.

I think its the right strategy now that there's a wider market out there. Volvo needs more product mix.
