The next Prius will be uglier than that. It will also claim 100 mpg, but only get 30 mpg. The only color will be white with "Diesel Sucks!" painted on each front door.

The rendering does look a bit cartoonish. I thought the new Prius was going to look much different than the current model. And that Gallardo-like front facia is horrid.

My point was that the Gallardo-like front facia on a Prius body does not look good. That is not to say that the Gallardo front facia doesn't look good. I do like the Gallardo design, front facia in all.

What scares many is that unless it looks like an Aztek, it will be a huge success. I know gas prices have recently gone down, but trend is up. It's sad that we are celebrating gas prices around $2 a gallon. There will also be an obvious CO2 emisions improvement (increased mpg=lower CO2). And finally Toyota never lets us down with increased space, content and luxury when it remodels its vehicles. The next Prius will be huge, even if it does look like that spaceship.

Wow, that acutally looks pretty nice. Reminds me of a Gallardo. I do doubt that it will look like that. I also doubt it will get great milage under the new EPA ratings.

I have always like the Toyota brand, but I'm never a fan of its hybrid cars. Honestly, I would much rather see Toyota and Lexus cars with diesel engines.

1) There are loads of extra parts in a hybrid, when compared to a conventional car. Chances of something wearing out / failing increase. For example, what if the NiMH battery pack goes dead right after the warranty? How much will it cost the owner to replace it? The last time I checked, Toyota doesn't even have a price on this, but it claims that the battery pack is designed for 150000 to 200000 miles. But really, who knows? (Something about battery: As a part-time photographer, I’ve had lots of bad experiences with batteries.)

Advantage diesel: Diesel engine is a proven technology, so it doesn't come with a big question mark. You pay a lot more for hybrids. Not so with diesel.

2) About the big NiMH battery pack.... Yes, NiMH is not toxic like NiCd, but it is still toxic to some extent (The electrolytes are harmful in large amount. Also, Nickel is semi-toxic). True, Toyota does offer free recycling service, and a $200 reward for each battery pack. But can Toyota guarantee that none of them will end up in the landfill? It is funny, you save the environment by reducing gas consumption with your product. On the other hand, you potentially harm the environment by having a big pack of semi-toxic chemicals in the same product.

Advantage diesel: Diesel doesn't come with a pack of toxic substances. In fact, diesel can be environmental friendly because there is bio-diesel, which is a renewable energy.


3) Apparently hybrids save gas on stop-and-go city driving only. If you do a lot of freeway driving, it won't do you any good.

Advantage diesel: Diesel engine is twice as efficiency as gasoline engine. It's efficient on both city and freeway driving.


One last thought, I would have bought a VW TDi if VW had a better reliability record. If Toyota is reading this, please bring us Toyota and Lexus with diesel engines.

Buy a Tesla. Zero emissions, 250 miles per charge (2 cents per mile,) 0-60 mph in 4 seconds. Full electric.

Just a couple quick comments...

For starters, this whole '08 fuel thing bugs me, just because everyone keeps taking shots at Toyota. Toyota's MPG will drop, but so will everyone else's, so in that perspective, Toyota's MPG will go down, but it will still lead the way for the most part, just as they do now.

Second, everyone keeps talking about hybrids and the MPG. How many times do I have to remind people that the owners of these hybrid vehicles do not buy them to make up gas cost. That is only one added benefit, the reason people by them is for the environment, how about the fact that hybrids produce 70% fewer emissions then conventional vehicles!!? That's the main reason people buy them, social and environmental responsibility.

Diesel is a good thing, but it will never work in the US, and here's why:

Diesel in the UK is a different formula, it a low-sulfur mixture among a few other things. The blend that they use in the UK is better and more eco-friendly then what we have available here in the US. The blend in the US is actually very bad for the environment. Anyway, so the reason it will not catch on here because we would have to change the entire diesel infrastructure pump system, and that's simple not going to happen. Too much money to convert, and hybrids already have the public's ear, so it's over for diesel. They are however working on a new form of diesel engine that works in tandem with an electric motor, and I guess that shows some promise, but straight diesel will not happen in the US, and that's just the way it's going to be, so embrace it.

Lastly, that is not the new Prius, that's just a fun photoshoppe job. Toyota will redesign the Prius, it won't be a spin off of the current one. And for those wondering about the design, and why they can't make them look like a regular car... Well, take a look at the drag coefficient on the prius and other high MPG vehicles, and that will explain it.
