Another State Wants to Join the 80 MPH Speed Limit Club

Faster, faster.

Well, seing as 50% of people already do 80 mph on highways, what the hell.

I live in northern Utah and can tell you that traffic on I-15 along the Wasatch front, during non-peak hours, is already going 75mph with plenty of drivers at 80mph+. As soon as you leave the populated corridor heading north or south, 80 feels slow, with 90mph being reasonable and 100mph doable in all but a few spots. However, 80mph is okay, that means one can safely (ticket-wise) do 85, it allows for safe travel for the average car and driver and you can cover a lot of ground at that speed (SLC to St. George--300 miles--in a little over 3 1/2 hours).

You I have to agree with these people 80 miles per hour for Utah isn't right at all. I mean come on. To remedy this problem we should have a federal speed limit, may I suggest 85 mph ;).

I would really like it if it was around 100mph btw. Slower drivers can still go slow and faster drivers won't get a ticket. Wait, wait, wait that is the problem with 100 mph speed laws the state won't be able to write as many tickets a huge loss there. Can I ask what is the main reason for a 65 mph speed limit safety or money.

100mph in a Mercedes S-Class feels slow and 80mph feels way way too slow.

I wish we would have stricter driving tests (i.e. retests every 5 years, (every 2 years for under 21 or over 65) and then increase the speed limits everywhere. I could also see adopting some of the German style laws and limits.

Seems like a good idea.

anything over 65mph used to feel like my engine was struggling, now that i use the German Castrol, the REAL SYNTHETIC oil, not mobil 1 or usa made castrol, now i can go 80 like it's nothing and really asily over that but i dont want to until i get a radar detector.

Sure go for it. Cause at current speedswe are allready garenteed to die in a head on accident, whats the worst that could happen, well i guess rear ending old lady incedents would increase

I vote for faster speedlimits and more testing

let everyone take a 3 day drivig class and let's get rid of the limit

The worst I have ever seen cops act is in Oregon. I drove through there to get to Seattle and drove to Portland. The speed laws are really tough there. On I-5 in Portland one cop was standing by the divider with his radar gun out looking at the speeds of the cars approaching. Another time I saw someone getting pulled over for going just under 70 (I was going about the same speed but he was ahead of me) in a 65 zone. Driving in Oregon really isn't pleasant when you have to tred along at 65 to cross the 400 mile landscape (which is beautiful, but still).

Thank god... with a speed limit of 80, everyone can increase their speeds to 95!

I can't get passed 65 on most highways in NY and once you get upstate NY there are state police sitting with a radar every few medians. Its these small towns only source of income. Out of the 5 last road trips I have taken with friends we have been ticketed 4 times. The whole NY thruway is a speed trap!

When I was going to Toronto, everyone was going 85+ and there was no cops at all, even when I was going 100mph.

I AM SORRY THE SPEED LIMIT IN ITALY IS NOT 140 KPH IT IS 150 KPH I HIT THE WRONG KEY THEY RAISED THEIR SPEED LIMIT A FEW YEARS AGAO.

Can't they do it in Illinois?

We still have the puny 55mph limit, and though I frequently do twice that, the other people on the highway are snails.

Perhaps that will help the U.S. cars to be better, because the big 3 would have to come up with better testing standard.

I vote for 100 mph for sedans and sport cars; 65 mph for everyone else. Oh, and lower limits at night or under rain and actually enforce them.

How about MINIMUM SPEED LIMITS? Honestly i think this is nearly just as important, say the speed limit is 80MPH, nobody can do below say 75? as it's the snails pace drivers that reall drive me nuts!

I LIVE IN ILLINOIS ALSO I HEAR ON THE NEWS EVERY FEBRUARY THAT ILLINOIS IS GOING TO RAISE THE SPEED LIMIT BUT THEY DONT SAY WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO DO THIS THEY JUST SAY THEY ARE PLANNING TO DO IT I THINK THEY WILL DO IT BUT NOT FOR A WHILE NOT UNTIL AFTER ALL OUR SURROUNDING STATES DO IT THEN THEY WILL HAVE NO OTHER OPTION.
