Crushed Box: Jeep Commander Toast After 2009?

Jeep’s largest offering, the Commander, is reportedly on thin ice. According to a Detroit News report, forecasters are removing the SUV from their model matrixes after model year 2009, and anonymous United Auto Workers sources have echoed the rumors.

To be fair, the Commander’s t-square styling and tight third-row packaging haven’t exactly won it critical raves since its 2006 debut, and some buyers considering the Jeep brand were reportedly choosing the similarly-sized Grand Cherokee instead.

Jeep managed to shift around 88,500 Commanders in 2006, but not without a pile of cash stacked up on the hood (according to Edmunds.com, almost $8000 per unit). What’s more, the advent of the Commander appears to have also curbed Grand Cherokee sales in the process, though fluctuating gas prices and competition from new vehicles like General Motors’ GMT900 SUVs doubtlessly have had an effect on both vehicles as well.

i thought the commander was doing well, since their selling them so cheap and it kind of looks pretty cool, not really.

My friend has one of these. It's nothing to be excited about. In fact, it was brand new and it wasn't even nice.

this thing guzzles gas like a bus with the hemi-engine the best solution is to pop in a modern 3litre turbo diesel in it ,and maybe they might save this thing from the book of shame

thats funny uoi say that, because in europe, the commander (and grand cherokee and 300C) come with mercedes' 3.0 cdi, which they call crd.

Why couldn't Jeep's head honchos realise that putting 100% of it's designing and engineering talent into the new Grand Cherokee would have been more beneficial to the image of the company than wasting resources and time by building some ugly spin-off with no market and dated looks!
