CNET releases its Top 6 engines

"WardsAuto.com released its 10 best engines list, so we went through our recent reviews to see which cars we've driven that used those engines. We've got six recent reviews, starting with the 2007 Audi A4, powered by the FSI 2-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. BMW's new 3-liter, turbocharged inline-six, which powers the 2007 BMW 335i, made the cut. Engines in two new crossovers we tested, the 2007 Mazda CX-7 and the 2007 Ford Edge, also made the list; in the former, a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, and a Duratec 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 in the Ford Edge. Nissan's 3.5-liter V-6 was a shoe-in, and we saw that in a number of cars, most notably the 2007 Infiniti M35 Sport. And finally, Toyota's 3.5-liter V-6 powers one of our Editor's Choice cars, the 2006 Lexus IS 350."

For the most part I agree, I've driven all these cars.
IS350 approx. 25k miles not spectacluar as they claim (does not like to rev. exspecially to redline)
335I only 8K but trully spectacular engine.
A4 2.0T Same as BMW maybe more so with the DSG (S-tronic)
Nissan/Infiniti 3.5VQ very good down low but again hates redline or anything above 6k miles 50k + first gen. 2nd only 5k and better.
The ford good for a domestic better than old still to soon to tell
Mazda very good but typical Asian turbo alot of lag then bam.

Yes I know, I'm saying the 2.0T would even be better with the S-tronic (DSG) as I really like this gear box. With the way the combination performs in other VW group product it would make the A4 that much better.

BMW's new twin turbo inline six and Audi's FSI 2 liter turbo 4 are worthy. But the rest of CNET's picks shows that they know as much about engines as they do about winter survival.

Engines that should be on their list:

Audi V12 TDI
BMW 5.0 litre V10
Bugatti 16.4 W16
Porsche GT V10
Porsche 997 TT
VW/Bentley W12

bugatti for sure, that thing is a masterpiece, but I think CNET's criteria didn't include v16 :).

However, I do drive a 07 IS 350 and compared to my old 3series and family members S4 it is spectacular performance wise.

Sound not so much. Then agian it's "Luxury Sport" so go figure... IS is to stand for "Intelligent Sport" if I'm not mistaken.

the w16 is the same base engine in the VW and Audi product. It is a modular engine that starts at a V6 and go to the 16T

Yeah that is correct, CNET isn't the most engine or performance orientated publication but all of these engines are in the Wards top 10 engines as well. So their selection isn't that bad.

I know i have a sport/performance car bias. I apologize for that. But the only jewel here personally, is the 911 gt3 N/A f6 engine. 415 hp!! from 6 cyl w/o forced induction. amazing.

May I ask why it's "Top 6"? Random, really.

My top TEN engines of 2006/2007:

1. Porsche 997 Turbo 480hp

2. Audi RS4/R8 4.2L 420hp

3. BMW E92 3.0L 300hp

4. Audi 2.0T 200hp

5. Infiniti/Lexus 3.5L 306hp

6. Mercedes-Benz 5.5L 381hp

7. Audi 4.2TDI 325hp

8. BMW 5.0L 500hp

9. Bentley 6.0L 550hp

10. Bugatti 16.4L 1000hp (it's amazing, yes, but 1000hp isn't much when there's 16.4 liters at your disposal)

Note: I chose most of the models above based on efficiency, i.e. the RS4's V8 has 100hp/liter.

Others that weren't quite as efficient, such as the S550 or Veyron, I chose out of sheer technological marvel.

The Bugatti Veyron only has 8 liters of displacement.

They picked nice engines, it is obvious they weren't going for exotic engines.

BMW engine is a clear number 1. Look at the performance nums.. grouping it with the a4 2.0T made by VW is a crime. More useless propoganda by (cheap) VW lovers.

I agree the 3.0LTT is the better engine, but the VW groups 2.0T is very, very good you should go drive it. If you were going to buy/lease an A4 this is the engine to have.

The BMW engine uses direct injection technology and a turbocharger that the 2.0 TFSI Audi/VW engine has had for two year now. Yes, VW and Audi have had the technology that the BMW Turbo I6 has for 2 years or so.

Second: 200 hp out of 2 liters is 100 hp per liter. Audi engine.

BMW engine, 300 hp out of 3 liters. Oh snap, same stuff, only the BMW engine is 50% bigger. Oh snap. How is the BMW engine better again?

If it's not listed w/ the Nhtsa, I don't believe it. Normally, I find fll fo the problems w/ vehicles here. The only BMW I saw problems with were 2004 330i's and it was a minor tranny glitch.

I can't believe none of you ever mentioned Honda and their amazing 2 liter i-VTEC engine. That should certainly be in the top 10 and certainly above anything that Ford coughs up.

What a total waste of time even posting CNET's engine picks on this site. We're car guys, they're geeks turned marketing machine. If I want useful information on computers I mightlook to them. But for cars, gimme a break, they have no credibility to be publishing opinions on cars or engines.
